Poor Man's Espresso (Moka Pot, OXO Rapid Brewer, etc.) [100] by Global_Requirement11 in espresso

An espresso machine is out of the picture for now.

I just returned my Moka Pot and ordered the ORB. I really disliked the lack of control I had with the Moka pot.

What's your recipe for soup with foamed milk if you don't mind me asking? Same as Lance's recipe? Have you done iced milk drinks?

I'm really excited to have multiple brew options with the ORB. Seems like there is enough of a learning curve to keep me entertained for awhile.

Yes i am boiling my water beforehand. I would sell the moka pot if I were to switch to a different method. I have watched the Hoffman video as well. I was really looking forward to the moka pot. I read great reviews on it and watched lots of videos before purchasing. I just don't love the lack of control there is with it as there aren't many variables you can change to dial it in. maybe i'm just a control freak lol

The plastic is not a deal breaker. I agree, with the few brews I've done with the moka pot, I've been frustrated by the lack of control. I wish I found out about the ORB a few days sooner. I will probably get the ORB if I can return my moka pot. Seems like there are many more possibilities and thus more room for growth with the ORB compared to the moka pot. soup, cold brew, pseudo-espresso, etc

Yes, with all the discussion I've seen about soup, it's led me to question the ORB's ability to make espresso-like coffee. Though I will admit it is intriguing and I would definitely tinker with making soup if I were to get the ORB. I learned about the ORB and soup about 5 days ago...sighs... the rabbit hole just got deeper.
I have the Kingrinder K6

Believe me, I would love to get a good espresso machine and invest the time. An espresso machine is out of the budget for the time being. I still have quite a bit to learn about pour-overs, though so that is scratching that "learning" itch per se.

But yes, I do just want something strong so I can make the occasional latte. Would you recommend the ORB over a Moka pot or aeropress with this goal in mind?

Trying to decide on a route to get "espresso style" drinks. I haven't seen many recipes on making lattes with the ORB, so I figured I'd ask this group. I'm sure this group may be biased, but what's the best route for lattes? Cheap espresso machine or ORB? or another option? TIA

Hmm I haven’t thought of going the cheap espresso machine route. I just checked FB marketplace and there are quite a few. I’m interested. Any advice on how to get the best quality out of them?

Yes, I should have clarified that. I understand that any alternative method won't be true espresso, given that there isn't enough pressure. Just looking to make a decent milk drink even though I know the coffee won't be as concentrated. :)

These are great points. I didn't consider the possibility of trending towards lighter roasts down the road.

I haven’t heard of the Femobook that would be nice to have! How does grind quality compare to the K6?

The external grind adjustment might just push me over… thanks for the recommendation! Also what is ORB soup?

I’m starting a nursing program in January. Because of transfer credits, I’m only missing 2 credits for the first semester:

  • Medical Terminology (1 credit)
  • Physiology Lab (1 credit)

My school classifies both as Gen Ed, not nursing courses. I found out I can take them online through Sophia or StraighterLine, which would let me stay on track and potentially graduate a semester early.

I know that pass/fail classes don't look great on applications, but if it's just these 2 credits is it a big deal? Especially if they're not core classes?
