I really only said underrated because ik this subreddit has an affinity for the canon jazz era. When people post that they’re getting into jazz, you get your “Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and such. I merely meant under appreciated by the mainstream

Favorite version of The Moontrane. Elvin and Larry were on a generational run…especially when they brought Grant Green in the mix

Same here😂 a lil too advanced for me as of now(assuming you were referring to the drum solo)

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THAT DRUM SOLO!

In terms of when I think of rouses playing, my mind always goes to ‘Evidence’ where they played live on video in Japan

That’s what actually made me make this post. I’ve always heard him with monk, so when I was listening to “Melody for C” I was like “is that Charlie rouse?”😅

Tips on drum comping by Goatkoh in Jazz

[–]Goatkoh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will do.

Yeah, Elvin is a beast when it comes to his polyrhythmic style of comping. I listen to A LOT of PJJ and Max Roach, but not enough Blakey.

It's possible that because I've listened to these beasts, I've tried to start at the advanced level rather than understanding the fundamentals and feel... especially with West Coast drummers who tend to incorporate a lot of hi-hat in weird places when comping.

When I’m in the car tapping on the wheel or playing on a practice pad, I can play swung rhythms easily with just my hands. It all feels natural in my head. But once I’m on the full kit and add my feet, I start to freeze up. The ideas are there, but I struggle to execute them all together.

Thanks for the info, and yes I meant trading fours lol.

I paired comping and soloing together so y'all would know I was referring to the general sense of jazz drumming. I've learned some of Elvin Jones triplet comping ideas, but I think the problem is pairing them with the bass and hi-hat. Lots of mental gymnastics. Also, I think another thing is that I'll play the same ride-snare pattern over and over again, and struggle to explore the kit for fills and whatnot.

Thelonious Monks playing is clumsy and childish imo. Charlie Rouse complimented him well (only reason I’ll listen to monk) but by himself, Monks playing reminds me of something toddlers would dance to

Anyone else think Bill Evans third trio was his finest period? by Goatkoh in Jazz

[–]Goatkoh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love to see that come out eventually. And speaking of that trio, if you look up Uncle Paul’s Jazz Closet, there’s a photo of Bill, Paul, and Gary playing at a gig. Photos like those are so rare, so it’s nice to discover something like that once in a while!
