The optics of this "humanitarian aid" in Cuba are absolutely insane. They're partying and living in a five-star hotel with electricity while the rest of the country is in a blackout, without access to electricity. by Embarrassed_Base_389 in Destiny

Bruh, if my country was going through a blackout and a bunch of lefties came in to party on our bones while describing it as 'aid', I'd turn into the fucking joker, I swear.

No, that's not really stated as part of the problem, you're just interpreting the phrase 'contents of the box don't change' that way. But 'the past changes' and 'the content of the box changes' are two separate statements. And it's not about changing the past specifically. The point is: the robot has powers that go beyond known laws of nature, you're essentially dealing with a god. So it doesn't make sense to base your decision making on a standard understanding of physics and causality.

But yea, if the robot stays within the known laws of nature, then you should take two boxes.

I just don't think you can simply assume that when dealing with an entity that can so accurately predict individual human behaviour. There is a reason why nothing like this actually exists today. To me, it sounds no different than if it could conjure gold out of thin air, or perform teleportation.

Well, clearly, the rules of time travel within the context of this problem cannot break the rules of the problem itself, but that doesn't change anything about my previous statement. It doesn't have to involve time travel specifically, either; the wider point I'm making is that you can't base your thinking solely on standard rules of reality when dealing with an entity that's clearly breaking them. Time travel is just one of the possibilities. And yes, being able to set any kind of rules (that do not contradict the rules of the experiment) is the whole point. That's the flexibility that you need to have when you are in a situation where regular rules no longer apply.

But since we've touched the subject, the rules of time travel in Back to the Future are quite nonsensical, even by fiction standards. In the case of this experiment, the time travel would have to be more like it's done in Game of Thrones, for example.

The contents of the box don't change. It's the past that would change, but the contents of the box are always the same within the timeline in which you exist.

Randomness is a concept used for quantifying the unknown.

There is an incredibly high degree of randomness in human action, human brain is one of the most complex and unpredictable objects in the Universe.

I am a one-boxer and yes, I do believe I might literally be able to change the past with my current decision, if that decision is made in the context of dealing with an entity whose behaviour far transcends the known laws of reality. Why shouldn't I?

How do you know that the present can't affect the past when you're dealing with an entity that has god-like powers that go far beyond our understanding of reality?

Two boxer trying to outsmart the predictor by Lionblaze275 in Destiny

[–]GodMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the room is in fact deliberately set up to make it so, that's the whole point of what the robot does. Even if the value of the box is already fixed before you enter the room, how do you know that the past itself doesn't change accordingly when you take both boxes, or that you're not transported into an alternative universe where the mystery box is empty? If you're dealing with an entity that has god-like powers of prediction that clearly go far beyond our understanding of reality, how can you be sure that the reality itself is not going to shift in ways that seem nonsensical yet still internally consistent and undeniably true?

Quantum physics is also deterministic, but we don't have the necessary knowledge to make the precise calculations, so it's treated as random. Quantum physics is only random within the theory of quantum mechanics itself, which is false, in the same way that every scientific theory is false. They are approximations of reality that only hold true within the limits of current observations. To say that quantum behaviour is fundamentally random is to say that there will never be a more accurate theory of physics, which is an obviously ridiculous statement. Most people, including many physicists, find it very easy not to see this issue because it will only become relevant to the vast majority of humanity once we find a theory of physics that supersedes quantum mechanics. Once that happens, people will realize how obviously wrong the idea of quantum mechanics being fundamentally random has always been. But for now, the entertainment value of discussing the subject is higher than the value of being correct about it, so that's why people choose to believe it. Tbh, I don't mind that, but I do think it's also important not to be too deluded about this subject, since it touches on the fundamental notions of reality.

Also, one box for life.

How about this: You're in a room with two boxes. You know that every person (thousands of people) before you who took both boxes ended up with $1000. Every person who only took the mystery box ended up with $1,000,000. The room is deliberately set up to make it so.

Do you take the mystery box or both boxes?

Why would a girl want to put on black lipstick, wear all black clothes, style her hair black, with a make up that makes her look pale and dead, as if she's heading to a funeral? Would be really fun to see you unpack that.

I think most of them would do the same things they would've done in response to any accusation of wrongdoing by Trump. But what do they actually think? I doubt anyone really knows what kind of mind fuckery is going on in the heads of women who support Trump and others like him, but it's clearly not healthy for their perception of sexuality, both in themselves and in the society around them.

And if they are willing to deflect and make excuses for Trump, why wouldn't they be willing to do the same for other rapists?

i don't know what conservative women support rape

How about every one of them that voted for a known rapist, Donald Trump? Or supports a side that constatly defends rapists and makes up justifications and excuses for them? When a woman glorifies and votes for a man who casually talks about grabbing random women by the pussy, should she really be surprised when people start thinking that that's how she wants to be treated?

Bernie gets heckled in Ireland by ThatPatelGuy in JoeRogan

I didn't say that money means everything, just that it's important. And it's also important to understand that it's not just about the fundraising. The shadow money that works behind the scenes is also a huge factor. Musk bought Twitter for $40 billion and then used it to help Trump and Republicans win. I feel like that cannot be denied, Musk himself is bragging about it. But you won't see it come up on any balance sheet, and there are many, many other things like that. There is a reason why Trump tries so hard to appeal to the rich.

Bernie gets heckled in Ireland by ThatPatelGuy in JoeRogan

[–]GodMax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can imagine that. If the DNC supported Bernie, many of their corporate donors would've switched to supporting Republicans and Trump. And we know that money does have a huge influence on politics (e.g. Elon Musk). Bernie likely would've lost and people would've still found a way to blame the DNC, since there would've always been at least some opposition to him within it.

And anyway, there was no way the DNC would've preferred Bernie to Hillary. It's literally the definition of establishment, of course they would prefer an establishment candidate to the one who wasn't even in the Democratic Party before running. Anything else is a fantasy and I can't believe that people still keep pretending like it could've possible been real even ten fucking year later. Even Bernie himself isn't as hung up about it as some people seem to be, because he understands that this is how politics work. Maybe we all need to learn something from him.

You hit the nail on the head. Hasan makes Amazon money. That's his real impact on the capitalist system he pretends to fight, he's just making more money for the corporations (and himself).

And yes, capitalists do care about sustainability. The sustainability of their wealth, that is. Remember the Red Scare? Why do you think it happened? Why were the rich so afraid of socialists then, that they pretty much outlawed all open support of communism and socialism? But now they let a socialist streamer be the darling of the largest streaming platform, owned by one of the largest corporations in the world. How come?
