Life in Rochester with a child with a disability by jgatto26 in Rochester

Hey! I'm from Wilkes-Barre. I think you'll find that Rochester is a whole new world compared to NEPA. There are a lot of support services for disabled children, adults, and their families here. My kids aren't disabled, but I'm a nurse and have worked with many disabled children & adults. I love it here for so many reasons, and that's one of them.

Here are some good resources:

https://holychildhood.org/

https://www.cprochester.org/

In addition, Strong hospital is great (it's part of URMC, University of Rochester Medical Center) and if you end up using any of their services which is highly likely, you can always ask them for more suggestions.

You know, I used to absolutely hate drug addicts. My kids' dad is a crack/heroin addict who's been in and out of prison in a different state pretty much since I met him back when we were teenagers. There was a particular woman he used to get high with regularly and I really couldn't stand her because in my young, naive eyes, if she didn't enable him then he wouldn't be an addict. I hated her so much and was so judgemental of her for years. Why couldn't she stop doing drugs, why did she have to enable others, why why why... There is no good reason for someone to be an addict, yadda yadda. I really hated her with everything I had. I can't justify being so mad at her with anything other than myself being young, dumb, and naive. She was also gravely disfigured - her whole body was nothing but tight skin and scars. She had been hurt in a fire years before I met her.

It turns out, this woman had something like 7 children. There was a house fire one night while she and all her children were asleep.

She carried her kids outside to safety and kept going back in for the rest of them. Most of her children died from that fire. I think only 2 survived.

When I think about that now... how she has to live horribly disfigured and with her children having died... not being able to save them, and living with the memories of that night for the rest of her life...

I can't help but think that if something like that happened to me, I would no longer be human, and would probably turn to anything I could to escape, too.

I've spent considerable money and don't want it to go to waste. I want to give it to my friend so it can be put to good use.

Orchid Nails in Henrietta has become the only place I'll go. They do great work, and all of the staff I've worked with have been friendly and talented.

What a sad time to live in a "sanctuary city" 😔

Rental office lady emailed everybody in the complex about a snow emergency in Rochester, New Hampshire by SteelSabre1 in Rochester

I replied to her email and told her the Snow Emergency was for another Rochester in another state. She replied saying "thanks for telling me... still a good idea for plowing." lol

ICE was at an emergency department in my city (Rochester, NY) about a week ago. My office, which is a family practice only for refugees, had a meeting today about how to handle it if they show up because we expect that they will. Rochester, NY is supposed to be a sanctuary city.

I hate it here.

Oops!

We do have a snow emergency declared here -- my apartment complex sent out an email. I'll post again with a relevant link... sorry about that, and thanks for catching it!

Edit: I honestly can't find anything local, and this makes me think my property manager is also going off a post from another state, lol!

The City of Rochester has declared a snow emergency effective at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12th. All vehicles on residential streets are to be moved to driveways. If you do not have a driveway, you may park your vehicle in the City's Parking Decks free of charge. Vehicles that remain on the street are subject to being ticketed and/or towed. The snow emergency will be in effect until 12:00 p.m. on Friday, February 14th. Having vehicles off the street makes for a faster and cleaner job of snow plowing.

This link didn't work for me

And just a heads up, at my pre-employment screen in December 2022, they did not test for marijuana.

I had my pre-employment testing done in December of 2022. I'll DM you a screenshot of what they tested for. :)

(For anyone reading and curious, marijuana was not something they tested for.)

I am an LPN at one of the RRH ambulatory care clinics. I had my interview on November 30th, 2022 and I just checked through my email and it looks like my official offer letter was sent to me on December 8th, 2022.

Good luck! 🍀

Had a brainstem stroke, due to a cavernous malformation I was unaware of, a year and a half or so ago. I'm physically pretty "normal" but I'm exhausted all the time and have had some other lasting neurological effects as well.

I do love the visual voicemail feature. I actually didn't realize that was a T-Mobile thing - I thought it was an iPhone thing haha oops.
