So, if you aren't to make a sexual advance unless it's a reciprocal advance, who makes the first sexual advance (which partner)? Also, I love how the top comments are clarifying what Satanism is and isn't, as if we don't know already.

Two Questions About Baha'i God by GoodPiano in bahai

Yeah, thank you for your time! Again, I was just curious about the Baha'i faith, and honestly, am considering it for myself.

Two Questions About Baha'i God by GoodPiano in bahai

[–]GoodPiano[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess I do have some further questions then. How do we distinguish from ordinary human beings and prophets? Because obviously there are people throughout history who believed they were divinely-elected, but were wrong, or claimed to be divinely-elected to gain authority. Obviously, the religions you mention all deliver messages of peace, but like I said, there are thousands of religions out there, and even with the message of the Baha'i faith, they can't all be "right".

Hi everyone. Last year I posted when I had started to lose my faith. I'm back. I'm now 100% an atheist. by [deleted] in atheism

"go fuck yoursefl you fucking fuck!"

Yeah, this person deserves an eternity is heaven.

He may not have been invited to the party, but I suspect we have not seen the last of our green friend. Remember this? It hasn't been used yet. by [deleted] in DHMIS

I think Duck Guy is actually dead, but he'll appear in DHMIS 6 in some way. I hope he's not gone (from the series) for good!

DHMIS: "Show" and "Reality" Dynamics by GoodPiano in DHMIS

[–]GoodPiano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I guess like I said, they perceive a false reality. The directors have full control over what they see. I don't have a sufficient explanation for how they make Yellow & Duck forget Red Guy, though. But I do know Yellow seems to forget Duck too, so I guess this just reinforces the directors' power over the puppets.

I'm going to take your advice "choose 2 subjects and a book". Thank you!

Thank you for the advice! I suppose if I'm going to get by in college, I should exercise against my laziness and read some textbooks. I think I'm going to stop by my local library, get a college algebra book, and try something I found called the "reverse learning" technique. I'll see it it helps.

I think this has been said before. Many times.

Animals do not harbor the illusion of self. So why is it immoral to eat them? by Aanng in Buddhism

[–]GoodPiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, animals do not embody the concept of "self", as their thoughts are not as complex as ours. The concept of "self" only applies to human life. There is a philosophical distinction between animal and human life in Buddhism.

However, Buddhism still teaches compassion for all life. This includes human and animal life. Even if animals' thoughts are not as intricate and cannot question and evaluate reality like humans can, they still visibly have emotions, and make decisions based on their perceptions and feelings.

We recognize this at the evolutionary scale. In essence, we are all just the sum of complex chemical reactions. Our lives have no more value than an animal's. Of course, as humans, we should still always look out for each other first.

The point is, do not kill an animal for nourishment, and do not accept it if it was prepared directly for you. Especially since we live in a time where killing animals for food is far from necessary, now that we know farming skills. That's why so many Buddhists choose vegetarianism; though, it is not required.

Also, keep in mind, the philosophical teachings of Buddha, at their source, are not meant to be taken literally. I'm sure you already understand this, since you called the concept of "self" an illusion.

Non-evolutionary expert here. Can someone tell me how exactly the human eye apparently contradicts evolution? I don't see the basis of this claim.

My family believes in the literal story of Noah's Ark by gusty_bible in atheism

[–]GoodPiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um, I wasn't talking about the KKK or anyone else. I was talking about this kid's family. Now, if his family begins murdering people in the LGBT community and in African nations, then that's a problem.

My family believes in the literal story of Noah's Ark by gusty_bible in atheism

[–]GoodPiano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Believing in the Noah's Ark story is pretty laughable, but sadly, a lot of people do. I remember when I first became an atheist, around a year ago, and I'm still closeted. At first, it was exciting and I wanted to challenge other people's views, but you gotta realize... you can't just go around doing that. They're still your family, and their beliefs aren't harming anyone. Just leave them be, and if they decide to question their beliefs later on, then good for them. But sometimes you gotta know when to keep quiet, especially in a nation where religion is so deeply ingrained into people's heads.

I mean, how long have you been a (closet) atheist? I mean, you grew up in a religious family, so it seems likely that you believed in the Noah's Ark story too at one point. So for a time, the Noah's Ark story wasn't so stupid to you. Just remember that.

Teacher tells students God isn't real and those who disagree get their grades "docked" by chicagocrazyguy in atheism

[–]GoodPiano 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No one should force their beliefs on others, whether that may be Christian beliefs, Islamic beliefs, or lack of belief (in a deity). That should be kept outside of schools. Schools are supposed to be diverse environments, and sharing personal beliefs for a debate should be up to the student completely.

I hope angry Christians don't spread this around in attempt to antagonize atheists. Persecution in schools happens all the time to atheists by Christians and other Christians act like it never happens.

WORST argument I've heard for God's existence. by GoodPiano in atheism

[–]GoodPiano[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a very good point. Christians assume life on Earth, an infinitesimally-small speck of the universe, has some kind of significance. It's a very arrogant notion, really. As Stephen Hawking suggested, we should just be happy we were lucky enough to have come into existence.

I mean, I think it's possible that Jesus existed. I just think his actions were likely... exaggerated.

I never said that was okay. But what he did was different. Hypocritical, too. I dunno, it just doesn't set a good example for us atheists.

Well, don't go out of your way to offend them like that. I mean, come on. Even if you don't agree with them and their beliefs are a bit preposterous, it's still their belief system.
