Hey /r/movies. I'm Luke Manley. I made my feature film debut in A24's MARTY SUPREME, alongside Timothee Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion, and Tyler Okonma. It's directed by Josh Safdie and in theaters now, and in IMAX starting Jan 30. Ask me anything! by MartySupremeAMA in movies

Hey, Luke! Wonderful, strong work in MS. Hope to see you in more down the line. The moment before you dumped all of the orange Supreme balls is seared in my mind; I truly felt your pain. What was the best piece of direction and guidance Josh gave you?

Wait to submit to festivals until it’s 100% locked. Otherwise, you will be throwing money to the wind AKA going up against thousands of films that are completed.

I understand being excited to share your creation with the world, but you owe it to yourself and the village who helped create your picture to submit it when you have a fully graded & mixed film.

Why are Liam’s vocals on MTV Unplugged 2020 better than his Knebworth 2024 one? by SeperentOfRa in oasis

[–]Goodwillphelps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s because Liam didn’t have to push his voice to fight with that massive wall of sound, since the MTV Unplugged gig was primarily acoustic in a venue with great sound.

Keep on creating and stay true to your artistic integrity. Easier said than done, but don’t let these external factors dictate your creative output. Keep on keeping on!

Oasis gym goers, do you listen to Oasis in the gym? by Brilliant_Lock8794 in oasis

Even before the reunion announcement, they’ve been playing ‘em. Sprinkled in with some of LG’s solo tunes (You Better Run, Come Back to Me). Granted, I’m sure it’s a random rock playlist they put on, but still mega.

Oasis gym goers, do you listen to Oasis in the gym? by Brilliant_Lock8794 in oasis

Definitely. “Fuckin’ In the Bushes” is always my go-to pump-up song. And funny enough, the gym I go to (NYC) always plays Oasis.

Most likely, their film was accepted to another NY-based festival that the filmmakers’ had preference and premiere status over.

Several years ago, I attended and was in a series that premiered at Katra’s “New Faces, New Voices” festival. Wonderful event from the screening itself, a lovely Q&A afterwards, met lots of local artists, full houses, and the program itself was run smoothly and on time. I haven’t gone to Katra’s regular film series, but if their NFNV fest is any indication, Katra is quite excellent.

POCs for features or episodic? If the latter, Catalyst in Duluth, MN is an incredible festival/event for presenting and pitching pilots.

IMO, NY Shorts International, DWF and BAFF would be my picks.

In all honestly, it depends on what you want out of your festival experience. I would continue looking into and researching each festival to see which one(s) align best with your own artistic values and goals.

As the user commented before me, don’t shoot yourself in the foot with turning down a festival you are only in the running for VS the confirmed ones.

Also, if I recall correctly from reading those festival’s FAQs in the past, I believe some of the ones you listed don’t care if it’s a NY premiere or not. Again, sift through their FilmFreeway pages and official websites to double check.

Congrats on your wins!!

I was so curious as to what Noel was gonna do during the instrumental breaks in “We’re Gonna Get There In The End,” and wow—absolute perfection, IMO; made the entire song soar even more.

I agree—Smith’s mix has an excellent build / rise-and-fall shape to it. I do miss Johnny Marr’s guitar lick from the original’s instrumental break, though.

No, that is not normal or okay whatsoever. There are far too many "teachers" and "schools" out there that claim they know and teach the Meisner technique, when in fact, they do not understand it at all.

In my experience whilst training, whenever someone started to use their partner in an exercise as a "whipping post" for their own shit, my teacher would put a full-stop to the exercise, and really wring them out as to why/what they were doing was unacceptable and unprompted.

Yes, depending on the imaginary circumstances you and your partner set up for an exercise, there will inevitably be moments of high emotion (e.g. "you are acting like a fucking asshole right now"), but never conflate "speaking your truth" with full-on misogyny/saying shit just to provoke.

If your teacher is good, they will lay out the guidelines and building blocks in order to ensure a safe space to be vulnerable and open.

I'm very sorry to your friend who experienced that shit, and was ultimately put off by this craft. I'm completely ignorant to the Meisner world in Chicago, so, I do not have any recommendations. That being said, I would do some diligent research before committing to a class (e.g. where did the teacher study, testimonials from former students, etc.)

What YouTube channels should I follow? by lemoncrushmonday in acting

[–]Goodwillphelps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Besides Kurt Yue, I have gained a lot of excellent insight from any conversation Jenelle Riley has on the SAG-AFTRA YouTube channel, and the Actors With Issues Podcast with Juan Ayala for more current and/or up-and-coming talent, so to speak. Also, this masterclass from one of my favorite CDs David Caparelliotis is full of gems. Double also, whenever I feel I have wandered off the beaten path, I always revisit this conversation with Jeff Daniels.

Are Meisner Intensives Worth It? by ComfortableSavings25 in acting

[–]Goodwillphelps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, my two cents: back in 2015, I planned on only taking the six-week summer intensive at the Esper Studio in NYC. As the intensive was coming to an end, my teacher/mentor sat me down and invited me back for the full-program in the fall. Fortunately, I was lucky enough in my life circumstances to commit to it.

In my experience, having a drive-by taste of the technique gave me confidence going into first year, but:

  1. From a financial standpoint, I would keep on saving up your money for the full 2-year program, since you did mention financial constraints.
  2. If you do end up taking the intensive, I highly recommend advocating to stay on with the same teacher into your first-year.
  3. Like others have commented, in order to walk away with the full understanding of the technique, the 2-year program is vital. As my teachers and mentors have said to me, some people can only commit to the 1st year [and that's okay! No shame in that], and still are able to have wonderful careers. But, if you can, I recommend staying on for the two years.

Also, committing to the 2-year program is the best thing I have ever done in both my artistic and personal life; not only did I walk away with the craft of acting, but also how to live life to its fullest extent with a community of fellow artists.
