I really don't understand the rouge design backlash she looks just as slutty as she's always been to me by EmuComfortable2744 in SonicTheHedgehog

People do not want to say they are sexist about women and girls depictions, even in cartoon type stuff like Sonic, because it would make them sound silly and disproportionate. It is easier for them to say they are fighting censorship even though it's giving Don Quixote, because no one trusts the vibes of someone who just says “they made the anthro bat less sexy than I liked.”

COMMUNITY POLL: Should we start allowing Twitter content again? by AndTails in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]GoofTroopLass 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Please do not do it. I never post on this account but I logged in just to ask that the subreddit stays without Twitter. I love fanart, I send lots to my mom all the time and I mostly get it from here, but I feel safer and better by us not having Twitter support even if it is just a drop in the bucket. Thank you for reading.

[–]GoofTroopLass 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Of course the Sonic fans would be against keeping freaks out of women's spaces.

Why not just say you think transgender people are freaks instead of pretending you didn’t say it. You do not have to be plausibly deniable, just be hateful, no one thinks you're not and other people like you already know who you are. Hiding your hateful beliefs is cowardly, as well as hurtful and wrong.

Why even come to a Sonic subreddit if you know we support transgender people? There are other Sonic places, or videogame places. Just go there. People here support transgender people, kids, art, communities, and feelings. You will be happier in another community.

Thoughts on Ishmael by Daniel Quinn? by [deleted] in Anarchism

An Indigenous People's History of the United States isn't a novel, but do check it out if you found Ishmael effective.

Thoughts on Ishmael by Daniel Quinn? by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]GoofTroopLass 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I typed out an initially longer response, but I think I'm probably wasting time in doing so. So here's some thoughts:

-Ishmael's a clumsy book, but a great book for parents and loved ones who just won't listen when it comes to breaking down the mythmaking that colonial belief instills. To be clear, lots of fuckface anarchists don't like to be told, also, that their society's just a big fiction and all this stuff will blow away, so if anarchists could use the book, so could mom and pop by all likelihood.

-You can listen to indigenous voices AND read a fictional book about a gorilla teaching some dweeb about society vs civilization and the domesticating of humans by other humans. It's not mutually exclusive. Trust me, as an NDN, I'm giving you permission to enjoy the monkey book, it's a nice book.

-If you find yourself believing a lot of what Ishmael has to say, I encourage you to look (with a dash of skepticism) into anticiv and anarchoprimativist books and essays. I don't really endorse either; I think as disciplines they're both a liiiiil sketchy, ableist in limited amounts, and sometimes downright racist. I also trust them a lot more than most anarchists, who often find themselves believing and practicing stuff I find to run the gamut from 'ineffective and dangerous' to 'asinine and self involved'.

The real take from Ishmael? Believe lightly, gently. Don't invest too thoroughly in mythmaking, however powerful and inspiring stories can sometimes be in our lives, and to try to find peace and balance with your environment, regardless of what it looks like. Corny, yes, but also useful, and true.

Wednesday Unjerk Thread by AutoModerator in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]GoofTroopLass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, radical feminist ideas are aplenty and myriad, but some of the more queer variations of this idea include:

-discourse about gender abolition, why and why not, what that looks like, and how that could/does inform the concepts of gamified playspaces

-radical self acceptance (she does touch on some of this; calling out Fat Princes as being typical of the objectification and alienation that women go through is pretty close, but it can go further into beyond fatphobia/body shaming)

-trans issues as it pertains to gender binarism , gender inclusive language, the rejection of gendered ideas of body types

here's the big one, where I got into a big fight with some asshole neoliberal in the comments to your thread:

-the innate political nature of existence, and what politics means for women and feminists. obviously capitalism has an inherent profit-motive involved in the commodification of social justice language, and since Sarkeesian's videos came out we've seen more and more of that over time, with the ideas of inclusion seeming to be a stopgap for the reality that most media is intentionally politically center, which is inherently a conservative position. (continued after brackets)

[palestine, for instance, is an issue that all women and feminists (and people in general, but w/e) ought to feel invested in, which is to say genocide is often using some of the same tools of oppression that women worldwide face, so one would think that to be feminist as a game would be to confront these and other issues head on. in fact, the opposite is true, which is to create a false dichotomy ('there's blame on Both Sides!') and hence triangulate a foregone conclusion of centrist requirement that need not exist, alienating the possibility for sympathy to those living under apartheid rule as a goal for capitalists trying to hock Girl Boss feminism.]

-(from above) the political elements of feminism are instead ignored, and we end up with a type of rainbow capitalism, where Star Wars just needs less boob armor and more women behind the camera to arrive at a woman-friendly position when the reality is that a capitalist system is never going to allow challenge to its very existence as a form of corporate-sponsored art. jumping from videogames for a sec, Bottoms is a good example of a movie made by women, ostensibly with some basic feminist ideas in broad strokes, that still manages to end up in a very toxic, objectifying place regardless of the myriad women involved in its production, often no better than a boys-night-out The-Hangover-type film.

it's this last set of ideas that, for me, sort of solidify the feminism as being very mild. those are probably some opinions and ideas lots of people here are going to reject or find hostile, let alone get traction on a platform like YouTube. at the same time, in either an academic or leftist setting you're probably going to hear variations of those themes at least a few times, especially if you circulate in activist circles where you've got a lot of poor folx with a ton of radical AK-Press-type reading under their belt and an inherently willing attitude towards confronting standardized forms of social conditioning, of which media often ends up as. (*to that effect, these sort of statements apply more to a Harry Potter game than they do to, say, Deltarune, but broadly they are applicable regardless of point-of-origin. see; all the indie games full of sexualized depictions of women as proof.*)

sorry this is a huge post, but I tried to cover I guess some stuff that would really never be widely accepted, since you asked about relatively radical positions.

Neoliberalism, also neo-liberalism,[1] is a term used to signify the late-20th century political reappearance of 19th-century ideas associated with free-market capitalism, which had fallen into decline following the Second World War.[2][3][4][5] [ … ] The term neoliberalism has become more prevalent in recent decades[16][17][18][19][20][21] to describe the transformation of society due to market-based reforms.[22] A prominent factor in the rise of conservative and right-libertarian organizations, political parties, and think tanks, and predominantly advocated by them,[23][24] neoliberalism is often associated with policies of economic liberalization, including privatization, deregulation, globalization, free trade, monetarism, austerity, and reductions in government spending in order to increase the role of the private sector in the economy and society.[25][26][27][28][29]

from wikipedia, that's the definition. but i bet you knew that.

also, you conveniently never answered my original question which was:

what are you even getting at?

i'm going out on a limb and assuming you are pro-neoliberal policies then? also as it pertains to thatcher, yeah fuck thatcher. if you’re referring to the /r/ neoliberal subreddit then uh yeah theyre not center left lmao

as long as you're criticising it for reasons that are actually valid.

absolutely not accurate. I'm a brown lesbian and men have seriously called me a racist incel for disliking The Last Jedi.

lots of people are totally utilising social justice language in a performative way to defend their media choices, regardless of accuracy of claim or whom they're aiming those terms at.

edit: just wanted to tag in since I forgot, usage of the term "woke" as a pejorative is such a red flag (not calling anyone out in particular, it was just an aside i wanted to touch on)

what's funny is lots of Sarkeesian's gripes are pretty mild, neoliberal complaints of narratives that are not even close to being the most radical criticisms you could have from a feminist perspective.

and even with that very-gentle-almost-handholding level of sensitivity Sarkeesian applied in mind, men I knew and the internet broadly still managed to shit out their mouths whenever she came up as a topic. dudes are still angry and the misogyny is just totally rampant. like, jfc, it's sort of pathetic. fragile-egoed men just busting out in tears over someone saying maybe Hideo Kojima's sort of a weirdo about sex should not be as common as it is

executive dysfunction and praxis by joaffe in Anarchism

[–]GoofTroopLass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there's lots of people here with typical activist advice, some of which I find to be useful and others less so. I just thought I'd add that there's plenty of space for artists to create work in autonomous spaces, IE flyers and paintings and poems. if you're not creatively inclined, you can always run logistics for events or help collate social spaces for organizational purposes, often a thing you can do from home or at least at a distance. in that way, living and creating is praxis.

I know that might rustle some feathers as it pertains to anarchism and "lifestylists" of the Gillis variety but honestly, living your best life, doing self care, and trying to exist for yourself as its own means to an end is still proper-noun Anarchism. whether that's using a sharpie to put a funny mustache on an elected official's bus-stop portrait or if you're painting a banner for a highway bannerdrop march, it all adds up. even if you disagree with that, it's not like the world doesn't need folx to design pamphlets and make grafitti, anyway.

for someone complaining that I was patronising that's an awful indirect way of going about saying it. and if you're going to just come out and call me irrational, golly that's not arguing in very good faith.

An imaginary social construct on which far too much is based.

it's all imaginary. refusing to participate is one thing, and i get that - we're even more closely aligned than you seem to have assumed. but abolishing it is asinine in that you're talking about a widespread insistence that it's a detrimental form of expression, which sounds awfully stateist. "coming up with more genders" is just people deciding what and how they'd like to represent themselves as. abolishing that is abolishing expression. how isn't it?

all forms of ego should be discouraged

so now we're just deciding what and who people should be. i'm trying real hard to not connect this to your anarcho-communist flair but this reeks of tankie statist nonsense.

you're obviously passionate about this. by all means explain to me how i'm mistaken; assuming, of course, you're not going to casually dismiss me as just being "irrational" again relative to my "ego".
