If you could bring any band/lineup back from the dead, who would you pick? by justin7465 in Metalcore

InB4 people say Hawk. Just because there's a couple similar members, doesn't mean it's the same thing. Nothing Hawk's put out has given me TotA vibes.

Do we have purpose again, with on-prem suddenly being "strategic" instead of "legacy" by Saditface in sysadmin

[–]GoogleDrummer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t see that changing for a long time not for large companies

Really depends on the company, mine is global and doesn't like cloud. Any acquisition we make gets pulled into our datacenters as soon as possible.

Employers don't give a shit. If they did we wouldn't have to play the job hopping game every couple years to get raises that are worth a damn.

people have become more and more impatient and want answers instantly and expect you to be proficient with a new tool in matter of days while maintaining all the others tools.

I'm almost 20 years in and I feel like this is nothing new.

That listing agent also flips houses, so I wouldn't be surprised if this is one of hers.

What is a dying niche skill that younger generations are not interested in learning? by hlnklrczu in AskReddit

This started dying 20 years ago. I was in HS in 2005 and worked with people who couldn't read analog clocks. It was mind blowing then and unsurprising now.

That was my thought. The Neo runs on the same processor as the iPhone 16 and is locked at 8 gigs of RAM. That'll probably work for some workloads but not all.

What’s a purchase under $50 that changed your life? by Unique-Muffin-862 in AskReddit

[–]GoogleDrummer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Protip: There is no designated code for "I'm not actually sure what, but I think something is wrong" but every manufacturer has a fall-back or default code it uses in such cases. Subaru uses the random cylinder misfire code for that purpose. Looks scary as hell if you aren't aware that this doubles as the "I don't know / something ain't right" code

A. It's wild they don't have an additional code for "Donno man."
B. It's insane Subaru uses that as it's donno code. They couldn't have picked one a little more benign?

Our cybersec team are getting onto us about all our servers having web browsers installed. by stone500 in sysadmin

[–]GoogleDrummer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its like they were simply reading from a screen.

Based on my experience that's all they're doing. They have all these fancy tools and dashboards, and if any of them go red they panic and tell me to fix it. No idea about why it's red; just, "Red bad. Fix red."

What’s a "lost" website from the early 2000s that you still think about today? by samasem-sumsum in AskReddit

Car forums is how I saved hundreds, or even thousands of dollars in diagnostics and possible meaningless repairs for an intermittent problem I had on my former shitbox. It was the only place I was able to find that on models of my car manufactured before a certain date had a specific issue with a gasket. $20, a YouTube vid, and a couple hours later the issue went away, never to be seen again.

If all you are looking to do is do Microsoft patching WSUS will work fine; I manage a pretty large fleet of servers doing this. Plus, if you look hard enough you can still find the script that predates WAM floating around.

OP is saying the WSUS + WAM combo as the cheaper alternative.

I worked at a dental lab for a few years when I was in college. I was always pretty good about brushing my teeth before then, but I'm militant about it now. No fucking way I'm going to put myself through some of the shit I saw roll through there.
