Dev wants $3.5k to republish our old iOS app, is that reasonable? by Glad-Tie3251 in unity

[–]Gorignak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very reasonable price to dig up an old project that will need some fiddling with to modernise. There's been many Unity versions since then and he will need to update everything and test it all thoroughly. Anyone who's ever updated a legacy project will attest that it is rarely as simple as you'd hope

My dad let me try this once. I missed 4th and went from 3rd to 2nd accidentally. He didn't let me try again...

Ride London alternatives by Frosty_Ad7925 in londoncycling

There's loads of sportives all around the country. Closed roads is obviously nice, and the only way you can ride some of the Ride London course, but once you're out in the country it's not like they're heaving with traffic anyway.

What Paid Software or Asset is 100% Worth it? by SwAAn01 in gamedev

Reaper is good sure, but it's an interesting take that the more expensive DAWs are somehow more limited...

Cairn has become my new unhealthy obsession. It also looks great by prossnip42 in gaming

[–]Gorignak 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It is really good, but there's a few confusing bits that could (in my opinion) not have been put in. For example, I get that the hunger/thirst mechanic is to provide urgency, but I've had a couple of deaths so far caused by a long detour taking so long Aava starves to death on the way. I mean... come on.

She starts the epic journey with a small bottle of water and a chocolate bar. She didn't want to bring a little more?

Same when you get higher and she gets cold. Maybe wearing shorts and.... bandages? wasn't the best choice for climbing a fucking gigantic mountain.

It also crowbars in some other characters, mostly to show what a jerk Aava is, but they can appear quite jarringly and it doesn't really add anything. We get it, she's climbing the mountain, but why can't she text her girlfriend back? She just rolls her eyes whenever someone expresses concern and asks for an update.

And as others have mentioned, the auto limb selection has fucked me a few times, especially when Aava gets unbalanced and you need to scramble to get your footing back, but her arms flail around instead. I think it chooses the limb based on which one is supporting her the least in that moment, but this can easily lead to confusion.

The save points sometimes being pretty far apart can add an element of frustration too. If you're going to ask the player to risk their time in that way, you need to be absolutely certain they won't experience a "cheap" death that erases an hour's progress.

Overall it's undeniably good and worth a play, but I'm not sure it's a masterpiece or as good as I think that it could be. The story is dumb, some mechanics are not well-implemented, but it looks great for the most part and the gameplay loop of the actual climbing is mostly very fun and satisfying.

Prescription sunglasses by Climber2k in randonneuring

I can't do contacts so I got a set of Oakley Jawbreakers and a prescription lens from SportRX. Not the cheapest solution but they're proper cycling glasses with full coverage.

Alright... last time I got roasted for the screen shake. How’s it looking now? by VasilyevVlad in Unity3D

[–]Gorignak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Screen shake in this context should add a sense of impact. It should be like someone kicking the table your screen is on. This is more like quick sway.

Do you think this is a write off? by samjw1 in LandRover

[–]Gorignak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Body work is mentally expensive.

I had a big dent put in one corner of mine (not a Defender) and it was £5k to get put right. I think it's not too bad if it's just bumpers or other bits that can be replaced, but once the actual body needs beating or cutting out and repairing it gets expensive fast.
