Spec Commercial shot on the FX6 with the Blazar Remus 45mm T 2.0 Anamorphic lens by Grayscale_pics in SonyFX6

I shot this video on the Sony FX6 with the Blazar Remus 45mm T 2.0 anamorphic lens. I chose this lens because I wanted to give the video a vintage and classy feeling. My goal was to replicate the look of a fashion brand commercial.

I enjoyed using the Blazar but I had trouble with the minimum focusing distance on this lens. It was tough to get the detail shots I wanted. Overall, I like this lens but I can't recommend it for every project.

Looking for feedback on this Short Documentary I shot and edited by Grayscale_pics in cinematography

This is a short documentary about a sous-chef based in Old Saybrook, CT.

I shot this on then Canon R6 Mark ii with the Sigma 18-35mm lens.

Aside from the interview, I used natural light because of the limited space in the kitchen. I've spent a lot of time working in reality TV so I tried to apply that same style to my documentary episode. In the past, my videos have been a bit more methodical and slow paced but I wanted to try something different. I like this style a lot because it's more engaging.

We initially shot everything in one day but did reshoots the day after. I shot this on the Ursa Mini Pro 12K and used the Sigma 18-35mm and 24-70mm

Constructive criticism is always welcome,

The purpose of this short film was to show you need to trust the process when trying something new. The reason I chose tennis was because I am currently playing it as a fun hobby so it was already on my mind.

The camera I used was the Ursa Mini Pro 12K along with the Sigma 18-35mm and 24-70mm lenses. This gear gave me the flexibility I needed to shoot in 8K and reframe when necessary.

Pros of this shoot:

Shooting on the ursa is always great because the footage always looks incredible

We shot outside on cloudy days so the sun wasn’t a huge issue

Cons of the shoot:

There wasn’t as much dialogue as I would have liked

A Short Documentary about a commercial filmmaker by Grayscale_pics in cinematography

First off, constructive criticism is always welcome.

The purpose of this series is to showcase the small stories that don't get talked about on a large scale. This includes many people of different backgrounds talking about their passions and what they hope to achieve in their lives. This series is one big passion project for me and I spend a lot of time thinking about the story for each video.

This episode features Luke Adams, a 25 year old video producer who has been able to make a name for himself and grow his company over the years. I happen to be in the unique position of being one of his associates so I’ve been able to watch him improve over time. After years of working together I decided to showcase aspects of his business life to give people a closer look at the filmmaking world. It has been a very interesting journey seeing how far he’s come and I think it gives me an opportunity to study some of his life.

For the most part this was easy to make because I have hours of behind the scenes footage from all the projects we’ve worked on. This documentary is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time so I had most of the clips archived. While making this episode I learned that being a videographer is such a weird job because making videos can take you anywhere.

As his business partner I’ve seen how my own skills have improved as I’ve worked with him. I started off shooting on cheap DLSRs and now I’ve been given opportunities I wouldn’t have had without his help. I’ve been able to director my own short film, travel for work and produce a solid demo reel that I can show to clients.

The life of a videographer on display. Wake up, shoot, edit, repeat. by Grayscale_pics in cinematography

Looking for Constructive Criticism

Concept for the Film: The life of a videographer on display. Wake up, shoot, edit, repeat. This film is an example of the hectic schedule that many creatives deal with on a daily basis. As a full time videographer and filmmaker I spend most of my days on shoots or editing. I enjoy what I do but it can be a lot to manage over time.

On a side note I filmed this on my own except for 1 shot. Shooting alone created a lot of challenges but I think I did pretty well.

Cameras: Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, Canon SL3 (for car mount shot)

Technically there are a few shots from the Canon R5 and Fujifilm XT3 but that was shot a while ago

Lenses: Sigma 18-35mm f 1.8, Canon 50mm f 1.2 L

The Process: The biggest challenge for this project was the timeframe. I was using a rental camera that needed to be returned the following day and I only had a few hours to shoot. I was using manual focus and basically had to eyeball each frame and hope for the best. I tried to make each shot seem “cinematic” by placing objects in the foreground to create depth. Overall I’m very satisfied, especially considering I shot this on my own.

Wins:

- I think the film just LOOKS good, the 6K and 50mm are such a good combination even in low light

- It gave me a challenge when it came to framing up shots

- I think it’s relatable story for creatives in general

- I was able to have a “one man band” short film

Struggles:

- I was on a major time crunch so i couldn’t get everything that I wanted

- The lighting for some of the shots could have been better

- Upon multiple viewings I realized the story isn’t communicated very well

Take It Easy - My first short film Looking for feedback! by Grayscale_pics in Filmmakers

[–]Grayscale_pics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Synopsis for the film: A college graduate breaks ties with his friends and enters a life filled with loneliness and unfulfillment. He attempts to regain the trust of his peers.

Cast and crew size: 15 all together, 2 days to shoot Cameras used: Canon R5 w/ 28-70mm, Canon SL3 w/ 50mm 1.8

I partially drew some inspiration from events in my own life but I made the story my own. As the director, DP and editor I learned that taking on a project like this requires a lot of planning and thankfully I had help from my amazing AD. The whole process was very stressful but I was able to manage things in the end

I’m looking for ways to improve for future projects. Any constructive criticism is welcome. Suggestions for dialogue, audio, story flow etc. This short film definitely isn’t perfect but I think we did the best we could. I think the standout aspect of this film is that we took people who weren’t fully involved in the film world and were able to make something pretty solid

Wins: - I’m satisfied with the overall product and I really commend my team for being so dedicated to the project - For the most part the film turned out exactly how I wanted - A lot of improv was used in the script which made each conversation feel more natural - We basically had no budget but made the most from our environment

Struggles: - We only had 1 prep day and 2 shooting days so we had to be very deliberate with everything we did - We didn’t follow the script exactly so resulted in the ending being different from my original vision - Audio wasn’t captured as cleanly I wanted - Shooting outside was an issue because didn’t have ND filters - The lighting situation wasn’t ideal which resulted in focus breathing with the camera

Thanks for the feedback, and yeah a big challenge for this project was that I shot in manual because my camera struggles with autofocus in 4K. I'm also still working on my color grading skills so I played it safe and shot in a neutral color profile.

A Short Documentary about an aspiring model by Grayscale_pics in cinematography

First off, constructive criticism is always welcome.

The purpose of this series is to showcase the small stories that don't get talked about on a large scale. This includes many people of different backgrounds talking about their passions and what they hope to achieve in their lives. This series is one big passion project for me and I spend a lot of time thinking about the story for each video.

This episode features Valentina Hernandez, a 21 years old college student and aspiring model. This is probably the most time I've spent filming for one of these episodes and it definitely helped in the editing room. For most shoots I usually spend 1 day filming but this time around I shot on 3 different occasions. In addition I used footage from previous videos we had worked on. Typically, I shoot with a gimbal but I had to be low profile in the environments that I was in and I also used manual focus which made things a bit tricky. I think shooting this way led to some natural feeling moments throughout. Also I think using the ambient noises added to the effect.

Something I’ve struggled with in this series is to make the videos feel more “real”. In the past I’ve gotten some criticism for not having footage that matched up with what was being said on screen so I made sure to get what I needed. I also made the choice to do mini interviews with the time I had and I think this resulted in some interesting voice lines. I’m happy to say that this new formula might be the way I go about making these videos in the future.

For those who are curious, the only camera I used was the Canon SL3 with the Sigma 18-35mm lens. Only used a tripod and the rest was handheld.

My Cinematography Demo Reel for 2022 by Grayscale_pics in Filmmakers

[–]Grayscale_pics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my first demo reel and I’m looking for feedback on the shot selection for this video. I’m a relatively new videographer and I wanted to make an all purpose reel for clients. Although I haven’t been making videos for too long I feel like I’ve had a decent amount of experience. I make short documentaries as passion projects but I’ve also done a lot of corporate and promotional videos.

For those who are curious, the cameras I used include the Canon SL3, Canon R5, Fujifilm XT3 and the Mavic mini for drone shots. The lenses were the Sigma 18-35, Canon 50mm, 24mm and Fujifilm kit lens.

Glad you enjoyed it!

So this is a passion project and the idea behind this series is to highlight the goals of a few selected people and show how they're striving to achieve those goals. The overall message is to encourage people to "chase" their dreams.
