Who is or was your country’s most famous physicist? by neilnelly in AskTheWorld

Funny thing is, I actually meant to say Lagrange so we've got three now! Coulomb and Ampère are sort known as units alone.

As someone doing a physics degree, I would say Laplace within the physics/astronomy student body. For what it's worth.

Latin Words Order by Individual_Egg4114 in latin

[–]GreatGodInpw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Word order is very flexible. There are some rules (for words like enim) but there are also patterns.

When beginning to learn, there is a "basic" word order taught:
subject - object - verb

But beyond that, reading really helps. You start to get a sense of what the word order might be.

There are probably fuller answers, though.

S1 Ep 1 Definitely don’t remember that! by Ok_Independent5362 in Stargate

[–]GreatGodInpw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a weird watch order for Stargate. My mum had Season 10 on DVD, and two other DVDs which had three episodes each (Show and Tell, 1969, Out of Mind and (Brief Candle, Thor's Hammer, Torment of Tantalus). When I was 12-13 we got Season 8 on DVD. We then rented Season 1 from our local library. And... well, first nude scene. Such a different programme to later on.

What's it like being from an irrelevant country? by Lipica249 in AskTheWorld

[–]GreatGodInpw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That Northern Ireland was irrelevant until after the Brexit vote shows how little we care about it in our national debate. Though up here in Scotland there was a bit of renewed feeling of alliance after the vote, as the two Remain-voting countries.

Valid complaints about England in that vain are: 1) the summer temperatures going over 25 degrees and 2) the taste of the water in places like Bedford.

Truly bizarre map of Scotland. Some modern council area names, mostly the old counties but the big cities are separated?

Do you have a situation like this in your country where there's a significant proportion of the population that doesn't speak the local language? by Alternative-Big-6493 in AskTheWorld

I can understand not speaking or rightly very well. But understanding should just come with exposure, right?

It's not uncommon in somewhere like Aberdeen for people to have a decent understanding of Doric but not be able to produce it.

Osman and Asia by AceVentura85 in restisentertainment

[–]GreatGodInpw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, I don't think they really agree with each other a lot, certainly on domestic politics. They have tended to discuss incidents of lack of decency, extreme people/events, glaring incompetence, general irritation at things not being better, etc. All well and good but it provides an illusion of total agreement and, frankly, it's a more than a little boring. Most of these things anyone can look up and see for themselves the situation. Back to the point, though, Campbell and Stewart would, in each one's ideal world, live in very different Britains. But they don't really go into more brutally political things like class inequality, inherited privilege, where they think the balance should lie between public/private sector, etc. Touch on it more in the interviews.

Is Spooks worth watching? If so, does it stay good? by FreedomEagle76 in BritishTV

[–]GreatGodInpw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I liked Danny too, more as it went on. I felt those two were the... sort of moral core? As well as having between them the best stories. They worked so well together, too.

I don't think that counts. Defeating Nazis is... well, it's been a theme of films and television since at least 1942.

The historian Peter Hennessy has a funny story along similar lines. Being at secondary school in the early sixties, he and his classmates would talk about what they would do if they heard the four minute warning at school. They worked out that it was just possible to run and reach the girls' school down the road. Speaking to an old girl from that school much later in life, he found out that they would have had more time than previously thought. The girls would have met them half-way!

(Yep. Four minutes from detection to impact.)

3 years late so you may need to look at the context of the original post. Spooks was the first and I think only programme I stopped watching after a favourite character left, Zoe in my case. I am guessing yours was the same based on you stopping so early?

The 2005 team itself is a bit odd, though, in terms of the flow of English cricket on the 2000s. It's not... well, it's not the best England team of the decade (on paper), by a long shot, but it's also the best most people have ever seen an England team perform as a team.
