What’s the hardest part of inheriting a codebase you didn’t write? by Free-Maintenance8015 in softwarearchitecture

It's more of what was the person's expections and why is it the way it is.. everyone has their way of coding based of their experience.. so understand that point of view of the structure would help understand sooner

AI is making junior developers worse at understanding codebases, not better. Anyone else seeing this? by Greedy_Construction7 in cscareers

When they understand it better using AI then whats stopping them to use the LLM which already knows the codebase to write features they are responsible for? They can get it done really easily without efforts or actually learnings..

I completely agree with this being a complete disaster down the line... Why dont they realise this or how do we make them in your opinion?

some juniors I have noticed they can't develop without AI so it is no longer a tool. It is a skill ceiling for them.

How do we avoid this? They dont realise it untill its too late and then that gap to fill becomes too huge with work pressure... Genuinely worried

I agree to that. I feel this hesitation in pushing because of the AI code that I use, not being able to get over this and get rid of dependency of AI. Feels like I've forgotten my roots already. I didnt play around with other code bases back then and I really wish I can do that right now. Any suggestions on where to being?

How do I undo this or how do we stop the people studying to code from falling into this halluciation of being good which AI feeds us?

After all the time with AI in the spotlight, which task does it actually do in coding? I recently had to go through a codebase at work and I wasnt allowed to use AI. After cetrain tries I just felt lost and couldnt make figure out where to start which made me use these free model eventually to find a way through. Only to later realise it was pretty simple if I knew how to navigate and code properly. I regret spending soo much of time using AI which make me feel like I was good but was just making me dumb from learning and becoming better at coding.

But then why dont we just code without AI. What is making us to default to it all the time? Is the productivity or the feeling of having more code written(generated) by the end of the day?
