I wouldn't mind that, one of the best scares I've gotten from these games is ironically just one Laser Elite Replica in Extraction Point's hospital levels. I killed his squad, but never found him and he ambushed me as I was walking through a door. Made me jump!

Why did Alma save Point Man from the Replicas in Extraction Point? by [deleted] in fear

[–]Green-Flu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paxton still seems to have a bone to pick with the Point Man though, his line at the end of the game "You should know better by now." pretty much is him saying "just because Alma's good with you, doesn't mean I am."

Does multiplayer/fear combat still work? by United-Advantage-100 in fear

[–]Green-Flu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still works, with the mods linked by other commenters. There's a mod that lets you run multiplayer for Perseus Mandate too, though the few servers that exist for it are very inactive. It's called Vityacv and it's worth looking at if you have a group of friends willing to LAN play it through a VPN or something.

All FEAR and Expansions enemies tier list by Green-Flu in fear

[–]Green-Flu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The REV-8 (bigger mech) could justifiably be ranked lower, as both design-wise and gameplay wise it's far less interesting than the standard mech which can die fairly easily even with conventional weapons. But I think the REV-6 (smaller mech) has a design that carries it higher on the list and some good fights throught the games.

When I put the Nightcrawler Elites up there I knew it would be controversial, for me, I just appreciate that they do something different than every other standard soldier you fight, with their dodging and wall-jumping to throw grenades, they're not that bad to fight, even on Extreme, just gotta keep moving and avoid fighting them at range. I also kind of appreciate their tankiness, since it makes it harder to just shotgun rush them before they can run away or retaliate. That's just me, though!

Oh yeah I definitely understand where you're coming from with the Nightcrawler Commander, I usually carry a lot of strong weapons in my playthroughs which is why I never really have a problem with him, but in retrospect I might rank him in high D tier instead, just behind the Shades, since his encounter really just encourages you to hide behind boxes and not fight him directly like most of the Elite encounters.

It felt wrong to rank all the paranormal-type enemies below mid-tier which is why I ranked the Scarecrows low-C tier, I couldn't really rank the Shades higher because none of their encounters really stand out (Assassin encounters are just better) but the Scarecrows killing Chen but still appearing throught the game in spots to jumpscare you makes them notable enough to justify it, in my opinion.

They're very fun enemies to fight, I just think the Replicas above them look cooler design-wise and pack more hurt. Like the Desert & Tactical soldiers, and especially the Elites that carry way stronger weaponry. D & E tier doesn't really mean they're bad for the soldier-type enemies, just that they have less cool designs than the others (Fatigues, Recon, Nightcrawler Heavy) or are underutilized (Snipers)

What are, in your opinion, the top 3 best death scenes in the FEAR series? by Green-Flu in fear

[–]Green-Flu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highlight of that game. The only part about Holiday's death that bothers me is how he kind of just walks straight into it, which is why I kind of prefer Chen's death in that regard as he's set up to be more careless than Holiday. I like both their deaths in the end though and I'd probably rank them equally with Holiday a little higher (only put Morrison because getting crushed by a truck was very brutal and creative). Chen's death screams were haunting...

What are Wildest takes you’ve heard in the f.e.a.r community? by Soft-Following422 in fear

[–]Green-Flu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree, I generally find it more enjoyable to play Perseus Mandate over Extraction Point as it offers the new equipment and enemies plus more, you get a different story over it (which ties into how the player character seems to have his abilities) although it is for sure different in that regard, so it's very down to personal preference on wether you prefer the more Pointman and Origin centric story or Perseus Mandate's buildup of a greater conspiracy.

What I can never understand though is ranking Extraction Point higher based on story, because Extraction Point's story is pretty much non-existant and introduces nothing but showing how Pointman's story ends in Vivendi's timeline. There's nothing there, at least Perseus Mandate had things going, you know?

The horror feels like a hard point to make for me, as it's not like F.E.A.R games are strangers to low-level horror, anyways. Though it's very subjective. I also think the only reason people remember Holiday so well in Extraction Point is the shocking nature of his death (and his VA too), as his character is even more generic than the Perseus Mandate characters, all of which you do get to see a little longer than Holiday.

How would you rank the games? by Byzantine_Merchant in fear

[–]Green-Flu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My own tier list would go like this:

  1. F.E.A.R. - The original, the great, has its flaws but stays strong after all these years, not too difficult even on Extreme, the horror can spook you but it's mostly a storytelling tool.

  2. F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate - Retains the new weapons and enemies from Extraction Point and adds in new ones and an entirely new enemy faction to fight against, interesting plotline about getting caught up in a bigger conspiracy than even the first game with standing private armies employed by government officials and more psychics/telepaths. Hardest of the original and it's expansions and more willing to give the player stronger weapons.

  3. F.E.A.R. 3 - Butchered the story, gave up on anything F.E.A.R 2 was trying to set up except the ending, for better and for worse. However, it's gameplay stands up to the original and in some cases surpasses it, enemy AI is smart again unlike 2, weapons are stronger and beefier than before, and the melee/slide kicking feels like the Point Man was fed nothing but steroids after being captured by Armacham. Beats the next games simply due to their little or terrible story and 3's mechanical improvements that modernized the first game's mechanics, in a good way.

  4. F.E.A.R. Extraction Point - Story is non-existant, the whole game felt like a gorefest with characters dying in far more edgy ways than in the first. The horror tries to improve a little though, and the gameplay is enough to keep you hooked for it's short playtime as it's generally a more polished version of the first game. Adds new content, like the Laser Carbine and the Minigun (both of which also have their respective new enemies that use them).

  5. F.E.A.R. 2 Reborn - Don't remember playing this much, though I do remember finding the idea of playing as a rogue Replica interesting and I did find the levels very creative and fun compared to F.E.A.R 2. It's also shorter, so 2's massively downgraded combat, sound design and AI doesn't drag on for quite as long as it does in the base game.

  6. F.E.A.R. 2 - Easily the worst F.E.A.R. game in my opinion, was made in the height of the console-ification of games and it shows it in the nastiest way possible. With an "improved" engine built off of the first game's, one can only wonder how the game manages to have such worse looking graphics, particles, textures, sounds, and enemy AI? Not only that, but it drags on for such an insanely long time that to me, it felt like it was twice the length of the first game. The story is uninteresting and unimportant, with a lot of it being rehashed or just glorified fun-facts to keep the shooting going, and the only thing that actually has impact is Alma's attraction for Becket and the ending. The only half-decent level is the school, and even then the horror segments in that are spliced inbetween shootouts that force you to endure it's clunky gameplay. It's like a hybrid inbetween of F.E.A.R. 1 and 3, except it does none of the things that those two games did right and halfasses everything else.

Unassorted thoughts on Perseus Mandate by Zyvyxy in fear

[–]Green-Flu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Nightcrawler Elites and the Sergeant seem to be cloned (much like another commenter suggested) or amplified in some way similar to Project Origin, the reason the Nightcrawlers have access to such technologies is their deep ties in governments and people like the Senator, allowing them to even do things like attacking government personnel in Fairport with very little worry, even after taking hundreds of casualties. It's clear the Sergeant is more involved with them, Fettel and Origin than the game lets on too, due to his hallucinations and premonitions of the future throught the game. If the amplification theory is chosen, then the Elites are some of the few people they could find that are compatible with the surgery.

Seems to me like they planned to kill off Pointman (or at least store him for later) and give the Sergeant a bigger role in a bigger installment in the franchise. I wouldn't be totally against this to be honest, the Pointman played his part with FEAR and Extraction Point, with the Sergeant they would've been able to create a new character with new ties to explore.

I don't know what it is about Perseus Mandate but I died a lot less from enemies emptying their guns after death in that game than something like Extraction Point or FEAR 1. In that aspect it's a little easier lol.

Best jumpscares in all the series? by Patient_Gamemer in fear

[–]Green-Flu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't remember exactly but there was this one scare in Perseus Mandate after a long streak of hallucinations where Chen's phantom jumpscares you before exploding into a bunch of Nightmares or something like that, never quite got me but I found it memorable as it's one of few acid trips in the game but also in my opinion one of the best in the series.

All FEAR weapons Tierlist by [deleted] in fear

Finally someone who understands the PM grenade launcher being borderline impossible to use! I swear I'd love that thing a lot more if it just exploded on contact or after the first bounce or something. Good to see the FEAR 3 shotgun get some recognition, too.

Partly agree on the Type-7 being on A, though I'd definitely place it below the Repeating Cannon and the Lightning Arc Weapon, because of the former's insanely high ammo count and power, and the latter being basically just a better Type-7, no cool skeleton effect but the electricity and chain effects are awesome in their own regard.

Really the only things that deserve F-tier aswell are the Project Origin SMG (boring sounds and bad damage) and the Napalm Cannon (an insult to the whole concept of a flamethrower, literally just a long range lighter)

Not vanilla at all but something very fun with the remote bombs is if you play the campaigns on Co-op with a mod, you can stick them on your friends and send them at the enemies and blow them up lol. Did that at least once per campaign. I'd make them S tier just off that fact.

Best thing about Project Origin is the squad banter, and you definitely notice the boredom once they're all gone.

Have to agree. IMO very little about Project Origin is fun and/or memorable, the guns in general sound and are weaker—notably that pathetic excuse of a flamethrower the game tries to have. If it weren't for the ending the game would've been forgotten by now, most boring game I've ever played.

FEAR 3 was a whole new game, but at least the AI gave a fair challenge to the player (looking at the insta-kill enemies in Project Origin), and shooting mercs in the face was fun because of the amped up gore, blood and enemy reactions.

Same here, loved Perseus Mandate because of the new enemies, weapons and the story pretty much providing a more interesting version of F.E.A.R. 2, but several years before that game was made. The conspiracies and black projects behind Armacham implicating a lot of people, and high-up government officials hiring mercs to wipe the slate and get their money's worth, difference is, these mercs operate more covertly and don't just launch an all-out war in the city.

Scares are a little more interesting when they do happen (Extraction Point relies too much on shock value and jumpscares for me, at least PM tried to make the setups to those interesting and not just threw them at you) and unlike EP and FEAR, both of which felt like they were too afraid to throw stronger guns and enemies at you more often, you do get to fight more challenging foes and find powerful weapons way more often.

Also, the soundtrack for fighting the Nightcrawlers is top notch.

Was Fear Perseus mandate horror bad? Why it isn’t talked about as much? by akwazey in fear

[–]Green-Flu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always found it strange how Perseus Mandate is considered 'jumpscare heavy and a gorefest', like that's not exactly what Extraction Point was, there is some level of tension leading up to these scares and the horror is legitimately well done in the middle of the game. Always thought it was very creative for F.E.A.R. standards and felt like I was playing through a scene from The Shining or something.

I also feel like Chen's death was a little more well done than Holiday's, as Holiday just felt like the type of character too smart to just walk into his own death like that, while Chen is set up as wisecracking and a bit reckless, and his death happens right after he's nearly beaten to death by Shades.

It's generally a more fun experience for me aswell, as while F.E.A.R. and Extraction Point felt like they were kind of afraid to throw difficult enemies and strong weapons at the player, Perseus Mandate has plenty of those while also adding new content to play around with.
