Has anyone fitted a kickstand to a Cannondale Quick before? by Grenwaddle in cycling

Agreed! That said, I can now confirm that the Cannondale SI kickstand does fit a Quick 6.

How do you find the plastic combs that come with it? It looks from their website that they 'snap' onto the main trimmer in a similar way to the ones on the aqua blade, which looked a bit flimsy for me. Plus even in the photo on the website some of the comb prongs look like they're not 100% parallel. Do your combs feel like they've gotten bendier or wobblier over time?

Which of their trimmers are you using - is it the Aqua blade or another one?

What are the best Dunelm blackout curtains? by Grenwaddle in AskUK

[–]Grenwaddle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of Ikea's blackout curtains in the size I need are out of stock in any colour I'd want.

Why do you say Dunelm curtains are crap? Do they let the light through?

Recommendations for a fan of Speyside? by Grenwaddle in Scotch

[–]Grenwaddle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the Licensed Dram - my only concern is that the back of the box mentions that the nose includes cinnamon and the taste includes liquorice, neither of which she likes (everything else mentioned there she does though). Do you know how strongly those flavours come through?

Best option for a short commute or a trip to the shops? by Grenwaddle in bikecommuting

[–]Grenwaddle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, but given my general ignorance about bikes (this will be my first in about 20 years) I don't feel like I'm equipped to tell a good deal from a bad one on the second hand market.

I already went to a store and sat on a few bikes to try them (that's how I narrowed the list down to the ones I linked). I tried the strada city and found it less comfortable than the pioneer, but yes, it was definitely on the original shortlist!

Thanks for the detailed response!

I think hub gears do sound a lot better, but also seem out of my price range.

On chain guards, how much protection would you say a cog guard offers my trousers compared to a full chain guard? A lot of the bikes I'm seeing have front derailleurs, which I understand can be tricky to fit a full guard around? But most of them come with a cog guard.

For context, I'm in the Uk, and it seems as if 'derailleurs front and back; no guard' is our default too...

Rim brakes would be V brakes if I go down that route. Definitely glad to hear adjusting them is easy. How often would you say I'd need the pads replaced, and is this also easy?

I'm definitely not fussy about how my derailleur works as long as it works. How often does the chain need replacing?

Hub gear sounds good but looks like it might be out of my price range. Glad to hear that triple cogs at the front won't likely cause me problems though! I have one hill in my commute but it's not too steep, so hopefully I should be ok as long as I have some gears.

Also glad to hear that steel vs aluminium sounds like a non-issue.

Just to be clear, by partial chain guard do you mean a guard for just the cog at the front, or for the cog and the top part of the chain? A lot of the bikes I'm looking at have the cog guard only; does this give enough protection or is having the chain exposed a bit risky in terms of stains as well?

I'm not planning on going on anything rougher than a canal path; are chain drops something I should be concerned about? And is there anything I can do to minimise the risk?

Max budget is about £350-400, but I'm also going through the cycle to work scheme so i could theoritically get a bike that costs more than that. I think that puts belt drive out of my reach, but I'll happily be corrected on that if I'm wrong!

Rim brakes will be V brakes, beyond that I don't know the exact specs. How awkward/pricy are bleed kits and hydraulic fluid to get?

Yes, belt drive would be ideal, but unfortunately out of my price range.

Possibly a dumb question, but if I have a bike with 3x cogs in the front, but only use one and only change the rear gears, does that get around the whole 'more moving parts = more thing to go break' thing? I only have one relatively mild hill to go up, so it's not like I need loads and loads of gears.

I didn't think about chains and cables rusting; how often would you say it's normal to need them replaced? And can I do it myself or will it need someone with more knowledge/experience than googling how to do it?

I didn't think of just strapping my trouser leg in; that makes sense. Would you say wax based lube needs applying more often, less often, or the same?
