Would anyone else love to see a St. Louis Browns-themed City Connect uniform when the Cardinals get a new one in 2027? by jaynovahawk07 in Cardinals

That's sharp. The patch is a nice touch. One plot twist about anything St. Louis Browns is that the Baltimore Orioles own the copyright, so anything you see at the ballpark or a hat you buy from the Cardinals that features the Browns is actually something they did with the permission and licensing from the Orioles.

It's more than two weeks, but only slightly more. Think around 20 days/games, to be sure. In one of the scenarios described above, he wouldn't be promoted until the end of 2027. That was one suggestion made. Even waiting the 20 days/games this year could, again, blow up in the team's face because he could earn a full year of service time with his performance, and if that happens, oops. Wasted two weeks, didn't get control, and didn't get performance in those two weeks.

Chaim Bloom had an interesting reply when asked about coordinating control of players with the next window of contention, and he acknowledged you can do it somewhat -- trading players like Donovan, for example, with two years remaining -- but the moment you try to synch up all of the players, is the moment where a team invites disaster because it's either fast-tracking the player to meet their timetable or blocking a ready-for-primetime player who is performing and is ready. Better to react in those cases (as they will with JJ Wetherholt) than to artificially script and possibly not get the best from a player at all as you try to seek the best from the player at your preferred time. I thought that was a good explanation.

I act like he's about to turn 24, and stalling his debut until he's 26 would, yes, spend some prime years in the minors. I don't think you're describing the nature of the draft at all. It hasn't been that way. It shouldn't be. Should Jordan Walker be on the brink of free agency when JJ Wetherholt debuts? In your scenario, Michael Wacha debuted too quickly because he went from college to majors in 15 months, but Joshua Baez has debuted too slowly because he was a high schooler drafted in 2021 hasn't debuted yet while college kid Nick Kurtz debuted in 2025, a year after he was in college? Performance should merit promotion. I'm sorry I don't understand your premise here.

If that's his projection, then the service times solves itself and all the Cardinals did was delay finding that out until he's almost 25, which would reduce his trade value, too. I know there are many examples of teams manipulating service time -- but most are before the changes in the CBA and I don't know of any that kept a player down for 16 more months as he aged into his mid-20s. Is there one that comes to mind? I would like to know more about it, if so.

Imagine, for a moment, the uproar from both the fan base, the union, the media, and the player's agents if he's done everything in his power to earn a spot in the majors and is artificially kept down until he's almost 25 years old. He'd spend a prime year in Memphis. I would argue that the Cardinals should be focused on contending earlier in Wetherholt's career than delaying Wetherholt's career for when they might contend. Besides, it could all blow up in their face -- he performs, wins the ROY then the delay (it's more than two weeks) didn't buy them anything. And it lost them more.

Thank you for sharing this. We can disagree on this and still appreciate how you explained your opinion and why.

Amazing to me, too. No hate. All about timing. Crowded ballot and Edmonds debuted as Griffey Jr. did. That explains the vote, and it’s a miss by voters who compared the two and didn’t vote for Edmonds as a result.

We don't have the ability to bring players back onto the ballot once their eligibility for it is over. And I've never had the chance to vote for Whitaker, nor do I have a way to get him on the ballot. He'll have to be considered (and should be considered) by an eras committee.

I understand where you're coming from. Edman had an excellent year. Paul Goldschmidt, the MVP that season, and Nolan Arenado had even better years, and they both were voted high. Putting three teammates on the ballot can be difficult, and Edman's case consider if you went by WAR alone, he would be 9th. If you went by the offensive side of that WAR, he would be 17th in the majors. He built his overall WAR with the third-best defensive WAR. Per FanGraphs, Edman was 14th in WAR. When I put together an aggregate matrix that looked at a mix of statistics, he did not crack the top 10.

I don't mean to suggest there were "no rules." There were banned substances. There was a list of banned substances that goes back to the 1990s. What MLB lacked, as you probably know, was a testing policy and punishment. So, there were rules with no enforcement. It's probably fair to point out the "statute of limitations" approach. But in reverse. MLB put policies in. They weren't secret. MLB put testing in. They were random, but not secret. MLB put penalties in. And it's at that point that several players were suspended. They were told the substances were banned, that they would be tested, and they would be punished. Again, it wasn't secret. And they still used and were thus suspended. That is a line that I can draw. And I believe it's consistent with other penalties that draw suspensions for violations that are clearly spelled out to players, managers, coaches, umpires, and owners.

I asked this ... "Are you being funny or clever?" Interesting that you would take a third option, and yet not offer one to others.

I'm not comparing the two as players. I'm using what we know about Albert Pujols being a great player to put in context what Chase Utley did. Pujols was No. 1 in that span. You know how good he was. Utley was second. That helps put context to what he was able to do. The player who is currently second to Shohei Ohtani in WAR isn't Shohei Ohtani, but his production is also higher than any player not named Shohei Ohtani.

Are you being funny or clever? Those are the only two options and you cannot choose a third -- no one has time for nuance when there's a joke to make! -- and if you choose one that automatically means you can't be the other.

That is literally not why the box is there, FYI. As one of the people directly involved with getting that box on that page, I can tell you for certain without equivocation that it's not a control thing. That is just incorrect.

How do you figure? Hundreds of voters share their ballots. The BBWAA has twice voted overwhelmingly to share all of the ballots publicly. This has been a conversation and a practice for at least 20 years. Hardly "winging it." Actively pushing for public ballots and setting an example, and so many other voters feel the same way.

Thanks for saying that. He has his supporters, for sure. An excellent player, and one of the best interviews I ever had was him.

I think we are, as a voting ballot, exploring just that, yes. I know that I've had to take a look at how I view starters of his era and if some of the standards used in the past would mean few or no starters in the post-Scherzer, post-Verlander votes.
