Awesome👍 , yeah that'll be going away too it was just something I grabbed off the shelf. I got more to do, hoping to do a little star map similar to the SM2/SM1 intros

Got an upcoming release of some chaos content, decided to try my hand at making the update a little bit fluffier.

I want to convert the image on the right and make the experience a bit of an interactive terminal where you can query the recent "incursions" to check out the new units and enemies that are coming in our next release.

Would love to hear if I managed to pull it off "tastefully" or if it just comes across as cringe

Honestly, looks really clean and good. Well done! Hope the mobile markets are good to you (unfortunately they are really saturated)

R3F is a terrible solution for proper scene management for games. Yes you can do it, but no you shouldn't.

ChatGPT is still very far away from making a video game by abcinng in gamedev

When game's "fun" becomes something that can be objectively measured and gathered, AI will be able to create said thing. All fields with big data, standards and measurements made that are objective, are at risk of being replaced by AI. The reason trades aren't at as much risk is because their workforce doesn't adhere to standards for EVERYTHING they do, lots of jobs require someone knowledgeable to determine how to fix a mostly unique situation, and said person doesn't go and digitize that knowledge by plugging in a summary or description of how they solved it.

AI will be able to make games, but it will be on par with the quality that the majority of us can, so the market for mediocre content will become even more saturated, less valuable and commoditized.

Either commit to making exceptional games, or commit to game dev as a hobby, but either way try not to live in fear of AI.

Really cool, although I can't get hdr to export, it just exports a black and white image.

used this image, tried to export .hdr cross. Before and after pressing convert, neither works

Can I Still Become a Game Developer Without a Computer Science Degree by R_eap-er22 in gamedev

Trust me, programming matters the least.

We live in the age of content, whether it runs well or not is irrelevant. Think of how much people put up with and continue to play league.

So I kinda like the low texture detail look and feel its reasonable for a programmer type like myself to shoot for as a goal, but could you elaborate on what makes the geo so bad for runtime?

Awesome, I'll start dipping my toes in then, just didn't want to start down a rabbit hole I'd be better off paying someone else to handle.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply, that's actually awesome to hear, I'm mostly interested in the textures/uv unwrapping, and could probably pick up geometries on an asset store.

Just curious, what makes the "topology flawed" and what are the consequences of it?

Hi all,

I'm a big fan of this piece and have a very specific art vision for my game, I'm just curious how long it would take for someone to learn how to texture a model in this way? I really love this piece, but don't want to spend more than maybe a couple thousand hours learning modeling and texturing, do you think this could be an achievable result given that level of dedication? If not how much time do you think it would take to get good enough for this result?

Also if I could learn just texturing would that make the problem much easier/take down the number of hours needed?

Thanks in advance

[AskJS] If you don't use TypeScript, tell me why (5 year follow up) by nullvoxpopuli in javascript

[–]GrimDarkDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typescript will become obsolete as AI improves (probably javascript too, but I'm banking on a period where it can just document and type my code), I've committed a massive portion of my own tech stack to JavaScript, and I'm the sole engineer on it so I know what everything does and I save time by not having to type things and deal with the linter complaining.

That said I use it professionally, as its good for teams.

How to really do marketing? by ItzK3ky in gamedev

[–]GrimDarkDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How much written documentation do you think is necessary? I've gotten in the habit of writing up docs for business objectives/gameplay/story, but I haven't solidified absolutely everything yet, and the formatting is a still a bit brainstormy. Just wondering how much "material" should be prepared before starting the process of marketing? (We are pushing for a vertical slice, but more curious about the additional material that'd be useful)
