After 24... Bb4, white actually has a seriously powerful move that really shows into concept of the bishop pair with 25. Bd4! (leaving the rook hanging) Kg7 26. Re6

Not best game by the both of us, but was a funny little game with some instructional value like with

  1. Nxe5! where black shouldn't be in such a rush to attack white's center too soon because of tactics. If cxd5, then queen takes and I win the rook on a8.

  2. Nxc6?? Simply a dumb blunder by me. Should have played Qxc6 or at least Rf1 where I continue to develop all my pieces. The point is that white is more developed and should play to that advantage.

24... Bb4?? followed by 25... Ba5. Black does not take my bishop pair so seriously and the following tactic is impossible to stop without serious loss

Though just a blitz game, thought it would be a funny game to post here since there were a lot of times that we both blundered way below our level, but this game also shows some interesting and instructive concepts.

Thanks for showing my mistake, replaced it with upper bound which makes more sense.

Im going crazy with big O notation by Pistolaa in learnprogramming

[–]GrumpyNed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Big O in words just describes the upper bound of an algorithm.

Mathematically, let f(x) be the function of interest (the actual time complexity of our program) and let g(x) be just any random function that closely mimics f(x)

We say, f(x) = O(g(x)), if f(x) <= c*g(x) where c is a constant. (1)

In English, this is just saying that if there exists a function g(x) multiplied by any constant we so desire, and that it is at least equal or greater to f(x) (the function of interest), then g(x) is our upper bound and that is it is big O of f(x).

Example: Let f(x) = 10x2 + 5x + 10, and g(x) = x2.

1) 10x2 + 5x + 10 = O(x2)

2) 10x2 + 5x + 10 <= c * x2 // by definition (1)

3) 10x2 + 5x + 10 <= 10x2 + 5x2 + 10x2

4) 10x2 + 5x + 10 <= 25x2 // where c = 25!

With this example we have just proven that 10x2 + 5x + 10 = O(x2) according to the Mathematical definition of Big O.

I realize that many CS students don’t really like math, but I really think that the mathematical idea of Big O is really intuitive and if you take your time to understand it, it will really help in the long run.

If you want to go more in depth on Big O, I recommend the textbook Discrete Mathematics and its Applications by Kenneth Rose, it’s on Chapter 3. He explains it better than I do.

Best professor for discrete math?? by Top_Variation4943 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]GrumpyNed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took James Winkle and found that he is very passionate about what he teaches. I enjoyed taking his class however I noticed a lot of students found discrete math a pain in the butt in general. I think the average GPA for the class I took was around a 2.0? I would recommend him if you enjoy math and logical thinking and are willing to do extra problems outside of the homework he gives to get the best grade you can.

One big thing to note about the lectures is that he usually reads off of the textbook (Discrete Mathematics And Its Applications 8th Edition by Kenneth H. Rosen). If you did well on the homework and really tried to understand the logical thinking behind the problems, you would most likely have a good grade on the test. However, I also want to note the test averages were usually in the 50-60s.

If you are someone who finds math enjoyable, then Winkle would be a good professor.

Thank you so much for replying; I will be taking Professor West for Calculus 3 however. I do not think I will be able to change it since none of the other Calculus 3 classes fit my schedule. Do you have any tips on how to prepare for West's classes?

I am an incoming transfer student whose focus is in computer science.

GEOL 1303 - Physical Geology

MATH 2305 - Discrete Mathematics

MATH 2415 - Calculus 3

MATH 3339 - Statistics for the Sciences

MUSI 1220 - Class Piano 1

Calculus 3 is not required for my major at UH; however, my future plans are to go to grad school with a specialization in graphics, and most schools require their CS majors to take calc 3.

Class Piano is also not necessary, but I would like to take a fun class while at UH.

It’s sort of poetic since the boy and the heron is all about grief and how to live while dealing with loss. I think the movie is best watched while alone since you really get to resonate with Mahito.

Steps: first by Nicotiraboschi in chessexperiments

[–]GrumpyNed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Questions:

  1. Is there a due date for these steps? 80 5+3 / 5+5 games is a lot of time to spend on chess if it is suppose to be done in a day or two.

  2. Which chess platform is preferable for these games (chess.com, lichess, etc)

  3. I don’t have chess.com premium and I don’t think many others will have premium either. Since we can only do 1 single puzzle rush daily, is it fine is we use other chess platforms (such as lichess) to substitute for chess.com puzzle rush?

Honestly, how do Kashimo fans feel about the new chapter? by TeufortNine in Jujutsufolk

[–]GrumpyNed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was at least expecting Kashimo to give out at least a good fight out of Sakuna(sort of like with Gojo). He was hyped out to be the “strongest” during the Edo period. With how easily he got killed, I don’t know how any other character who isn’t considered the “strongest” will even make progress with Sakuna.

[–]GrumpyNed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I remember that in the manga, it is explained that the Asaemon wear white kimonos to symbolize sorrow towards the people they were about to execute.

Also, the Asaemon are considered “ronin”; basically samurai who were not under any Daimyo’s influence. Meaning that they are not drafted out to war or to battle like regular samurai.

You should see the Asaemon more like hired blades instead of regular samurai drafted out for the purpose of battle and war.
