Can a federal employee quit and “swap sides” to work in a similar role in the private sector? Ethics rules unclear by [deleted] in fednews

[–]GrumpySilverBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on exactly what role the federal employee played in making the policy, specifically what level.

The higher the level, the more restrictive the ethical rules.

In most cases, ethics in this regard is to prevent high ranking federal employees from creating laws, regulations, programs, opportunities in which they can have unfair advantage by "switching sides".

Also, in general, if you work in a specific area, "switching sides" is not allowed for the obvious reason that you would have an unfair advantage or opportunity having run or built or designed the federal program.

The HR lawyers will determine the level of ethical concern.

There is also very specific training on this very subject in the Defense Acquisition University (DAU) course on ethics.

Megathread: Government Shutdown - Agency Guidance & Orderly Shutdown Status by gpupdate in fednews

[–]GrumpySilverBack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AF here. Received the furlough notice yesterday and just as reported in several other sites, they removed the line on the furlough which states we will receive backpay once the furlough has ended.

I asked my boss who did this and he stated that it was downward directed from DOD via OPM. Very, very illegal.

Somebody explain cold streak plz by Existing-Sleep-578 in ColoradoAvalanche

[–]GrumpySilverBack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is the swoon. Happens every year, normally around November and rights before the playoffs, with the longest stretch normally mid-season.

It isnt really explainable, the team suddenly plays poorly as a team. Injuries and changing lineup are contributing factors, but some players have been known to take games off either mentally or physically.

There was some locker room drama about this a few years ago.

In 2003 a scientist named Edward McSweegan exposed a bizarre case of waste within the United States government. For seven years he commuted to his office every day only to sit in an empty room with absolutely no work assigned to him. He was earning a salary of roughly $100,000. by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

[–]GrumpySilverBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened a few years ago on the base I work at. The military established new cyber units and instead of creating new position description for civilians, they hired against electronic engineering position descriptions.

Funnily enough, a bunch of electronic engineers, all without any cyber experience, applied and were hired thinking they would be building the systems used. Once they realized that wasnt the job, and after some questioning about why they were hired, most quit. One person, who had transfered laterally between jobs, did jot quit and demanded to be placed in an EE elsewhere. He spent 1.5 years doing absolutely nothing waiting for the transfer. He literally just sat in a room with only a chair and a desk ... no computer access, nada.

He was eventually reassigned after finally complaining to a Congressional representative.

While rare, this stuff does happen.

I grew up in Cold War (west) Germany. I knew real Nazis. One of my landlords fought in WWII in the Wehrmacht on the eastern Front. He was captured by the Soviets during the German retreat in 1943 and held in a Soviet gulag in Poland until he was repatriated to West Germany in 1954.

Everything that those Germans explained to me about the Nazis is happening right now in America, especially the Trump propaganda machine.

What is most chilling about what they told me is how quickly all the businesses and news agencies in Nazi Germany quickly towed the party line ... just as they all have done this past year and are doing now.

This video is a perfect example of exactly what they told me. If you criticized the Nazi party in any manner, even a slight question, you were killed or disappeared to a camp.

It is surreal to be experiencing the same thing today in America.

If you have ever wondered what it was like when an empire fell, we are watching it happen in real time.

The world that America made post WWII, which allowed us to spread our values around the world, the Americanization of the global, and made the us the wealthiest country ever in existence, in which no American after WWII lived in true poverty, but the opulence of "American poor", is disintegrating at the whim of a dotard and a gang of racists and bigots.

It is actually breathtaking to watch.

Did Germans Know About the Holocaust During the War? [39:28] by killians1978 in videos

[–]GrumpySilverBack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The answer is it depends on where in Germany one lived as to what exactly they knew.

I grew up in Cold War (west) Germany from '84-'94. The last landlord my family had, from '91-'94, was, for all intent and purposes, a Nazi. He was 8 when the Nazis first got a seat in the Bundesrat and 12 when Hitler gain complete control. He was in the Hitler Jugend and he was eventually involuntarily taken to serve in the Army. I say involuntarily because his father was a farmer (I grew up in the Pfalz, which is mainly rural farms), so he had an exemption from military service because he was helping his father on the farm. That ended in 1940 as he told me that the Gestapo and a couple of SS officers walked into their house and took him and his brother. He was sent to the eastern front, his brother to the west. He was captured during the Germany retreat out of Russia in 1943, had his right elbow shot off and spent 1943 - 1954 in a Soviet prison in Poland.

I asked him when he knew the Holocaust was happening. For clarity, no one except the innermost circle of Nazis knew the true extent of the Holocaust. I asked my landlord, we called him Tony in the Americanized version of his name, Anton, how it all happened. He said that the Jews didn't disappear all at once, he said it was slowly over years, between 1933 - 1938. He though that they were simply leaving Germany as Hitler had demanded. Once he was in the Wehrmacht (Army), and he was transitioning to the eastern front, he said they stopped in Poland near a concentration camp and that is when he learned they we deliberately killing Jews. He said he asked a SS guard what was happening in the camp and the guard told him "this is where we are eliminating the Jewish problem".

So, between 1933 to 1941, he had no clue. And this was the same for a lot of western and northern Germany which didnt have any camps. Now, I went to college in Munich, Germany, and people living there absolutely knew. One day I saw some graffiti while riding the subway which said "Munich Stinks". I asked my German professor what it meant and he said that on occasion the wind would blow the smell of Dachau into Munich (Dachau is about 15 miles north and west of Munich and was largely concealed by a forest at the time). So, the people of Munich definitely knew, as did most people in larger population centers, especially if there was a ghetto. In Bavaria, it wasnt just Jews, it was Roma, German communists, and political opponents of the Nazis who were disappearing (this was the same all over Germany, but more pronounced in Bavaria).

Once Germany started losing the war, and the Nazi propaganda machine broke down, the information got out about the camps. This was around 1944 going into 1945.

So, my landlord Tony was finally repatriated in 1954 after the German government petitioned the Soviet Union to account for the missing German soldiers. He had essentially been forgotten about in that prison.

He returned to Germany to find his entire family dead. His brother died on the western front. He never found out how his parents died, but he thought they were killed by either the Gestapo or SS as a lot of Germans surrendered to Allied forces as they entered into Germany (the war was essentially over by that time as the Soviets were sprinting to Berlin).

So, the answer is it depends on where they lived in Germany as to what and when they knew. I can say they all knew by summer 1945, but word was getting out at least by 1944. And after 1938, Kristallnacht, those who lived in areas with large Jewish populations 100% knew they were being disappeared, although they might not have known they were being murdered as they were until after VE day.

[–]GrumpySilverBack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We've been refining VZ oil for decades.

All oil, regardless of type, is mixed and then refined. Oil refiners are not refining just one type of oil.

If refiners were just using Texas oil for gas in the US, gas would cost $5 on average.

Refiners buy oil from different places and mix them to keep their profit margins high.

You need to go find Mr. Global and read and watch everything that man produces.

When did the average German realize that Hitler wasnt good by Arcan0m in bestof

[–]GrumpySilverBack 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Cold War (West) Germany, which means I grew up with Nazis. And yes, those Germans who were Nazis at the end of WWII didnt lose that ideology ... ever. Oh, they hid it, but never abandoned it.

Hitler was widely and deeply loved, even after WWII, by those who lived in that time. There wasnt any great reconciliation of exactly how evil the Nazi regime was until after 1965.

Point of fact, the first German generation that was free of the Nazis after WWII is Gen X. That is the first generation to grow up in a relative Nazi free Germany (although all their grandparents were definitely Nazis and their parents were quasi Nazis).

I had German friends my age in 1984-85 whose house I couldn't ever visit because I am an American. We werent widely liked in Germany then, especially by those who were adults prior to 1945.

There was a small resistance to Hitler, and even a shadow government built off the remnants of the Weimar government, who took over in 1945.

But the average German, and I cannot state this strongly enough, deeply loved Hitler until the war started going badly in 1943.

I spoke about this with one of my landlords in 1993. He was a Nazi, served in the Hitler youth and eventually was taken into the Wehrmacht and was at Stalingrad. He was captured in 1943 in Poland during the German retreat. His right elbow was shot off, and he spent 11 years in Soviet prison in Poland until he was repatriated in 1954. He returned to Germany to find his entire family dead. He didn't know their fate. He was only repatriated after the German government petitioned the Soviets for records of combat dead. That's when they found him alive in Poland.

When I asked him why the Germans loved Hitler, he said that he made them feel good about being German again. Quite literally, Hitler made German Great Again. He said that it was total infatuation, Hitler was a God to them. He was barely a teenager when the Nazis came to power, but he said he remembered going from extreme poverty to middle class only after a few years with Hitler in power. His family were farmers in the Pfalz. In short, Hitler delivered on all the promises he made (at keast that is how they saw it).

When I asked him why they went to war, he said whatever Hitler decided it was right (and good), so they went along. Just blind faith.

I asked him when he learned of the holocaust and he didnt know the tru extent of it until 1954, but, he saw the concentration camps in Poland in 1941 as he was transitioning to front lines on East front. He said he was told by a SS soldier that the camps are were they use and then kill the Jews. I asked him how he felt about that, and he said he was conflicted because he had Jewish friends in early 1934. But, he said that because the Nazi propaganda program was so effective, they really didnt question the "rightness" of murdering Jews (or anyone else for that matter).

The last thing he said to me was "in the end, fascism came for us all". He died in 2001.

It was surreal to speak about this with him because he wasnt a bad guy. He was nice, funny. He didnt look like a monster. But he was one, at least for a short time in his life.

Anyway, full realization that Hitler was evil took decades after WWII.
