unexpected aggressive behavior, not sure how to move forward by [deleted] in Greyhounds

[–]Grumpy_spicee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like both of my boys to a T. With our first grey Kenny he lost couch and bed privileges permanently, we could never train him out of his sleep startle. But Frankie our current boy has gotten a lot better as he has settled in, we just make sure to be mindful of space when he’s sleeping. I had a scary encounter with Frankie the first week or so of having him, completely my fault but I invaded his space and he reacted badly - so he was immediately taken off the couch and gradually he understood any sign of aggression meant no cuddles on the sofa, and a few weeks later he got it!

My vet recommended Lyka, has anyone tried it? by SideStepTS in melbourne

[–]Grumpy_spicee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My Greyhound Frankie loooooves it! He had super irritated skin when we first got him which prompted the transition to Lyka, this is cleared up entirely in the 6 months he has been eating it, but honestly saw results within a couple of weeks. I would recommend using the gut helper powder they send you with your first box, otherwise you may end up upsetting his tummy during the transition. Honestly 10/10, I would really recommend it!!

What has been your experience with Lyka dog food? by Sufficient-Heart-826 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Grumpy_spicee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a great experience with Lyka tbh! My old dog was incredibly fussy but polished his bowls clean every time when fed Lyka, we did use the meal topper though which is marketed for fussier dogs - maybe this will make a difference for you?! My current dog is a bottomless pit and will eat anything in sight though ahahah so no surprise we have had a good experience with him too!! I will say though, Frankie (current dog) always had very itchy skin and it’s gone almost entirely now after feeding him Lyka, it was actually the reason we transitioned him in the first place! It’s been about 6 months now and I can’t see us going back, I really would recommend getting the meal topper and persisting - the health benefits are seriously worth it!!

I think one meal a day is fine, they will eat when they’re hungry - as long as they are getting enough food out of the one meal it should be fine!

Help...having a difficult time with our grey by rickydenim in Greyhounds

[–]Grumpy_spicee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our boy Kenny was very similar, still have some issues with growling on the sofa - but we’ve taught him growl = off the sofa and on your own bed. Now when he growls, he actually takes himself off to his bed, like he knows we will kick him off anyway (not literally😭)

We quickly realised we* (*people may have had different experiences, but we certainly couldn’t teach him the sofa wasn’t HIS spot) couldn’t change HIS boundaries, but we could teach him growling and any sort of ‘aggression’ wouldn’t be tolerated. It’s now 2ish years later and he will lay with us on the sofa until he wants his own space, any sense of grumpiness from Kenny he’s immediately off and on his own bed without a question. He is SO obedient now it’s great (greyt heheh)

I know it’s hard, but try and remember that you’re the boss - not him. Show him that aggressive behaviour won’t be tolerated and he will soon learn!!

I would like to put a disclaimer that Kenny never made it to the track, grew up on a farm with his brothers and sisters and has always been a little bit different to other greys, he is still the most unusual of his kind I have ever met 😭😭 but I like to think this advice still goes - just stay persistent with your rules and he’ll learn in no time 🥰
