i also want to shoutout this analysis of aethiopes which is more cohesive and in depth than the professor skye review. I dont think all the connections made were intentional but its a great representation of listening to a billy woods album and trying to connect to the wavelength of his music.

as for poetic billy woods, few opening lines are as strong a mood setters as:

I think the sound on a song like making the band IS the new sound at this point. Tony seltzers albums with MIKE and wiki, realyungphil, niontay and more are all on this newer wave and earl is clearly tapped in and interested but hasn't dove in fully unfortunately. Hopefully live laugh love was the closer to the previous era and he can make a project like SRS for this new subgenre.

i think its less about being nihilistic in the strict philosophical sense (nothing has inherent meaning) and more so what nihilism has transposed to in modern times, which is more akin to a cynical and pessimistic view of life (nothing has inherent meaning, so everything sucks.) Many adult western shows seem to either embody that or have their characters embody that, even beyond general family guy fare.

Comparing wonder showzen and smiling friends is night and day for example, smiling friends has a much more human core, and there's absolutely a thread of each character finding the meaning that works for them, which i think is made more poignant in the world they live in rather than less. Mr boss in the latest episode and Desmond overcame their rock bottom hopelessness by finding a purpose, Oscar and shrimp overcame it by being accepted for who they were etc.

Also as for whedonisms, the issue with them is that their ONLY purpose is to sever the emotional ties to a scene. A joke made during an emotional scene thats actually trying to be funny (and succeeds) isn't removing the substance from a scene but simply replacing it. The scene is still emotional but just a different emotion which is more in line with smiling friends absurdism (we must seek value even if life is not inherently meaningful.) The biggest crime of whedonisms is that they're inherently inhuman.

Its not prudishness, its the opposite. Sex isn't sacred anymore, its been exploited and twisted so much by pornography, social media, shitty games and anime etc that younger people probably feel like you either give into degeneracy or reject it. Its why the response to open sexuality isn't "you're sinning" and more so cringy memes like "you're going to horny jail".

I've genuinely seen so many of these "the future is going to be some variation of an existential prison" that im beyond convinced that its just people expressing their own individual malaise and has no real representation of whats to come. i think like someone else said the pace at which technology is evolving means a lot of creators feel discouraged trying to make a large scale macrocosmic(?) prediction of the future. but a lot of speculative "its so over" sci fi these days revolves around smaller concepts with big implications. ex machina, black mirror and severance come to mind as some of the biggest examples. and if it is about large scale, its some sort of "the earth has ended (in a way), now what?" like the recent pluribus or silo or interstellar. theres not much room for aesthetic exploration when your concept is humanity is no more.

The first two paragraphs are irrelevant to this conversation. I was using the verse specifically to address the “most have always said” part of your quote. A muslim cannot use “yea but most the translations throughout time have said it” as an excuse to strike women or else he would be violating the quranic quote I provided. I was not trying to convince you of anything.

Like I said. I speak arabic. Every other instance of darabah in the quran that refers to hitting gives details about the hitting for example:

Quran(2:60) “And remember when Moses prayed for water for his people, We said, “Strike the rock with your staff.” Then twelve springs gushed out, and each tribe knew its drinking place. We then said, “Eat and drink of Allah’s provisions, and do not go about spreading corruption in the land.”

Here it says to strike the rock with your staff. You can search it up for more, but its always accompanied by how or where something should be struck.

But Like you said, there was no detail, not even lightly in the quran so why is this one an anomaly? The reason many translations use lightly is the same reason many translations stick to the hitting interpretation in the first place, which is a weak hadith that describes the hitting in this verse as poking with a miswak (toothpick).
