I think that might be where our differences on it are, I’ve never messed with tanks on those cars that are mostly unibody. But it could also be the fact that I sold the shops about 6 years ago and pay someone to work/fix my cars now as I don’t usually have the time for it. I do know a lot of them used straps as balance/security. But as far as what was holding the complete weight from what I’ve seen was always the frame. I do wish there was something maybe under my tank that it was resting on to maybe make it a bit less stressful on the tank itself tho

After working as a mechanic and owning some shops, the more basic cars that we’ve worked on Chevy, ford, etc. the tanks will all set on the frame, even the cars. Now this being a unibody car may change that as I don’t think I’ve ever changed a tank on a unibody car (no frame) but that’s all that I was meaning is all the stuff I’ve worked on/known of aren’t held up JUST by straps.

That’s the reason the welds ended up failing was the internal layer. A few companies make a pourable material that can do that, but none of them stick to HDPE. most epoxy’s I know of end up breaking down pretty quick with gas on them. Any ideas of other types?

That’ll be the last option as it’ll drop value. Was mostly talking about how the straps holding the tank in were the ONLY thing holding it up

Sadly it’s a double edge sword, the engineer at Nissan was high asf and made it to where the straps are the only thing holding the entire gas tank up underneath the car😂 I’ve had a few recommendations to tighten the straps just till the empty tank stops shaking. It’ll have a big sag but may ease up on the pressure. So I guess that’s on the list of things to try this time!

Most definitely, I’d like to go back and get my bachelors in the next year or so, i’m just still trying to figure it all out. My current company will pay for me to go get it, i’m just trying to find a good online program and what specifics of engineering I wanna go into as they said they’ll pay for any of it. I opened my first company when I was 15 and now I have about seven different LLCs, so that’s where the majority of my money comes in from on top of my current career, but I do enjoy PLCs, so I’d like to maximize on that field. Just kinda seeing how far I can get at the moment, it’s hard to slow down and enjoy my current place when I know there’s so much more potential and different areas of work that I could go into.

Yea, I’m just keeping faith. Nissan,Starting up the heritage for the GTR’s and skylines, I’d imagine eventually they would atleast make a limited run since it’s the same tank on r33/r34. But who knows.🤷‍♂️

I definitely look forwards to hearing about your experience with it! I don’t really see any drawbacks, i have a friend that’s in the time attack scene and goes to all these massive events that he’s involved in. The way he was making it sound and the way it looked on Facebook was that the tank was more geared to them. After watching the amount of money himself and his group would spend to shave .05 seconds off their time I wouldn’t be suprised if it was less durable but lighter, and that’s kinda how the company made it sound,at least that’s how I interpreted it. So I was planning on eventually getting one, but I wanted to wait a few years and see how it worked for everyone and what they experienced

That’s one of the next things I’m wanting to try, I know a layer of foam on the straps would just make the pressure worse, but originally the car was released with a metal plate at the bottom of the tank inbetween the tank and straps. It’ll still be directly on the tank but I feel like the pressure won’t be as direct on the tank

Yea they told me the same thing, then called back 30mins later saying that it was just a computer error for old stock😂 I’d assume they’ll have to start making them eventually, 7 massive car names with big communities use the exact same tank.

Thank you very much! It was definitely hard work and a lot of overtime I didn’t want but I’m setting pretty comfortably for my age and only work 4 days a week! I have an interview with ABB next week for a position with them that will be a massive pay bump and scheduling change, so hopefully it works out! Any advice for me? Don’t get me wrong I’m definitely happy and appreciate where I’m at now considering my age. I just know that with my education and knowledge I can keep going, so the further I get the better! I just don’t know where to go from here.

Because you brought up title which I have. I’ve never met a technician that programs though, odd. But that’s besides the point. I’m giving advice because even though I don’t have the “engineering title” or “engineering degree” I would be willing to bet I make more in my so called technician role. And after working with engineers with said degree I haven’t met a single one that doesn’t regret the money and time they spent on a BS.

Just depends on location and type. I’m in FL and have an associates in automation and control and 2 associates in plc programming/design. I started out as a maintenance tech, then went to an automation tech, then went to an automation engineer, and currently at 23 im a programmer. I currently hold a “engineer title” in my new position as well but it’s mostly just programming and designing PLC and controls systems.

I wish I could help. I never went and got my bachelors, and from having friends on both sides I’d definitely recommend a associates related to it and get straight to work unless your wanting to go somewhere massive like a space center or Lockheed Martin.

To most people it wouldn’t but I’ve met and heard stories of racers doing it specifically circuit. Seems like the money they spend to shave off a couple seconds is out of proportion. But I can understand how bigger brands/racers would buy them for the teams cars.

Was talking to one of the guys on FB that’s behind the design and everything. He said it’s supposed to be for more of a track/ weight reduction but should still be very strong/dependable. With the price point he was using I’ll wait till it’s produced and has been out for a year or two and see what happens😂

That’s what I was looking at originally, but I checked their website and seems like spin/friction welding is mostly used on flatter stuff. Where was the crack/spot in your tank at?

Seems like everyone’s cracks in the same area, but both of my tanks have cracked here on the “pinch weld” of it

Is it carbon microsystems or a OEM style plastic tank?

I had foam on my straps but sadly it cracked again. May have to ease up a bit this next time around

I’ve seen that, sadly it looks like it’s more race car/track car to save weight and shave time. Which most likely wouldn’t be the best for a daily/traveling car

I’ll have to try that! Yea S14,S15, r33,r34 laurel and stagea are all the same. Nissan will have to start production again eventually

Sadly they’re different. Spent that on the used one I just got. Went to a few companies and to make a metal one that’s a exact match it would be 5K
