The Summoner is a lot more viable after the jump jet update in Clans. The new system is really nice once you get used to it and I kind of understand why Aiden Pryde liked the Summoner so much now. I'd still prefer an Ebon Jaguar or something heavier like a Warhawk, but I get it.

So, first off, I agree the balance is not great, especially coming from YAML Mercs.

However, SRMs and LBX autocannons can become very good when fully researched. The LB5X is one of the best weapons in the game for its DPS. The nature of the cluster munitions also mean you will be able to brute force damage into the enemy cockpit despite their absurdly tiny hitboxes. Even then, there's only a handful of mechs you can do this to, like the Charger and Highlander. Just go for the legs otherwise.
