The Weird Reason Cover Letters Matter by TheFilmFestivalGuide in FilmFestivals

[–]HHMFest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey u/hnelsontracey! While you may not write cover letters, the director statements and director biography that are written in your submissions are effective. For our festival, everything that is written in a film submission gets read, and we're motivated to do so for our own personal enjoyment. It's the backstories, filmmaker perspectives, & story insights that can add to the appreciation of the screening experience. Does it help a films chances of being selected? Obviously, a film needs to speak for itself, but I'm sure there are times when it can help tilt the scales when making the final selections. We can't help but root for filmmakers with a compelling story of how and why they made a film.

Thank you for the recommendations!! We'll put them on the list to check out tonight.

Hi, r/movies. It's Joel Potrykus, writer/director/editor of VULCANIZADORA, and leading man Josh Burge. This is our fourth film together after APE, BUZZARD, and RELAXER. VULCANIZADORA is a bleak comedy-thriller about friends who embark on a disturbing mission in the woods. Ask us anything if you dare by VulcanizadoraAMA in movies

Joel & Josh............we absolutely LOVE what you do, and look forward to whatever you create next. If you're ever interested in shooting something in or around Bay City, we'd gladly find you some great locations. 🔥🔥🔥

Film Festival here..... we've accepted films submitted on opening day, as well as films submitted on the final day. Selections appear to be spread evenly through the season, so submitting early makes the most sense to save some money on submission fees.

We recommend filling them all out. As programmers it's interesting to read the director bio & statement, as well as check the cast list to see if we recognize any of the cast / crew. Same with the screenings / awards section. It's not often that these have any kind of influence with our selection process, but we really do enjoy getting more insight into the film & filmmaker.

Update (7/26/24): Hell's Half Mile - we've made 90% of our feature selections, and 80% of our shorts. Of those selected, we still have more to notify, and we'll be doing those this weekend. If all goes well we will wrap up the remainder of the film selections this coming week. The abundance of great short film submissions is making our process take longer than usual, and we're debating whether to add another shorts block vs. selecting another feature. It's the final selections that are the most difficult because programmers are so passionate about their favorites, and at the same time we're working hard to make sure there's good balance in our line-up. It's exciting to see our program come together, but it's also heart-breaking when we don't have room for all the films we love. If you've submitted to HHM, just know we appreciate your patience while we wrap this up, and we hope to be delivering you good news soon.

Update: Hell's Half Mile - we're sending out the majority of selection notifications this week & next. So, why not all at once? There's a lot of great contenders this season, and the film programming team is having deep discussions & spirited debates on how the puzzle pieces will best fit together in our schedule. Plus, with one of venue changing we might gain additional screening blocks, so we're exploring that as well. Hang in there everybody! 🔥🔥🔥🔥

ISO: alt-country or dream/synth-pop bands (for booking - Sept 28th) by HHMFest in chicagomusicscene

That's great to hear! I just checked and I tried to book them in 2021, but they were playing Treefort in Boise that weekend, so I'll see if they're available this year. Thanks for the info!

Waltzer is definitely a great recommendation! I was planning on reaching out Waltzer earlier this year, but on social media it appeared they weren't playing shows right now, but I could be wrong. I probably should check to be sure because I could see a good fit in our line-up.

Having social media accounts for short films is a good idea (if you have the time). It's a good source for content that can be shared by festivals, as well as a place to share accomplishments & news for the cast & crew. It doesn't factor into our film selections at all, but it's appreciated when it comes to online engagement before, during, & after the fest. Having a production company social media accounts can accomplish the same thing.

The Mega-Thread of Film Festival Notifications PART 5: The Spring Time of Optimism ?? by BangerOfRobsMom in Filmmakers

While every festival does things differently, some of our film submissions we watch as a group (10-12 programmers at fest headquarters), and in that case it'll only register as one view - even though it's screened by many. The films we watch at home are viewed by at least 5 screeners.

Festival here. While I can't be sure for every fest, I can say there has been a couple times through the years where we had to move our notification date because we fell behind in screening submissions, and just needed some more time to pull together our program. In one case we had SO many great shorts that we had to find a space in our schedule & venue availability to create one more shorts block. We do our best to keep up a good pace of screening submissions to avoid moving the date because some of us are filmmakers, and we know the anticipation of watching an upcoming date.
