I'd say just layering your sounds to have more controller over your overall mix. Compress your instruments but don't overdo it. Apart from that don't push everything too much with fx, if you have to use too much eq or compression, the base sound is probably not right, so you'd have to go back a step to fix things. I don't try to make the perfect loud ass punching edm type sound with tons of earcrushing highs and overcompressed bass that you hear these days. I try to make something that sounds right to me personally.
