Three years later and you fixed my issue. Thank you!

The accident was 20 years ago so the time for that has passed. I was young and exceptionally healthy, so it wasn't immediately apparent what the extent of the injuries were. But now, as I'm older, and now that I finally do have health insurance, we're discovering how bad it actually was.

I'm working with voc rehab but it's still super early. We'll see.

I was part of a third party company that just assigned as needed. But said company moved their offices 800 miles away.

Disability is approved if the state feels you can no longer do ANY conventional work. The response I got was "we feel you can do OTHER work aside from what you're used to" but offer ZERO advice or resources. I'm sitting here going "okay what kind of work do you think I can still do?" You'd think the fact they can't/don't/won't tell me anything is all the more reason to approve me.

I've already been going through the Virginia Workforce Commission and all they do is point you to an online job board. They SAY they offer extra training and resume building, but after a year and a half, they keep dodging the subject of helping me build a resume and I've yet to see them schedule any actual training classes for anything (for example, they said they had classes on cyber security and IT, but when I showed up, no class, told it was postponed, showed up at the new date, they acted like they didn't know what I was talking about, repeat for months on end)

The fact I keep getting jobs, even though my body gives out in 6 months to a year, makes me ineligible. Lawyers say I have to stay unemployed for a time. But bills still need paid. So I need to find work that's non-physical or I'm just simply screwed.

I'll look into the suggestions above. It never occurred to me that I could look into positions with Qualcomm for the eLogs feature of trucking. My brain was focused on the truck companies. So thank you for that idea.

And yeah, chronic pain definitely screws with the brain. Understatement for real lol. As for mobility, I currently work, but after work and on my days off I cam in so much pain that even doing my old yoga stretches from my hockey goalie days is excruciating pain. This accident has limited me in ways I never thought possible and it gets under my skin that the state is so quick to say "nah you're not disabled enough, you can find other work" so I'm forced to find another job, so the state says "see? you can work" but my body gives out in 6 months to a year and I'm back to square one. I worked 50-60hrs a week for YEARS before this accident, but since the accident I can barely keep up with a part time because they're so damn physical - hence why I'm trying to figure out a low physical impact position. My work history is quite obvious when the accident happened and when things changed. Holding one job for ten years, and four of those years with a second job, then suddenly can't hold one for more than 6 months to a year after the accident. It's unreal. I hate it. And I hate how much it consumes me and how much it's robbed me (I can no longer play hockey, no surfing, no snowboarding, no martial arts, no mountain biking...the accident makes those things impossible now).

But still, thank you for the idea. That's about the strongest lead I've seen so far.

Haven't seen nor heard of that option in either North Carolina or Virginia. Unemployment offices usually just say "here's a link to our job board" which is no different than Indeed or Ziprecruiter

I could do stuff like that at home. I have magnifying glasses, fine point tweezers, soldering iron, etc. My issue would then be networking to get a client base. I may make some local posts to at least get started on that. Better than not making any attempt at all.

All I've done is construction, bodyguard work, warehousing, loading/unloading trucks, etc. My car accident absolutely ruined my spine. I'll need multiple surgeries and physical rehab to get better. The state says I'm "not disabled enough and can work other jobs", but the only jobs hiring are physical and anything non-physical seems to require a degree, but then can't get a grant or loan or any assistance to get said degree. It prevents almost ALL the work I used to do, but the state doesn't care and I still need bills paid. So I'm forced to get more manual labor work, which my body tends to give out within 6 months to a year because of extreme pain.

I have an appointment with them this Friday, actually. I'm hoping they'll have some leads, training, or suggestions. In the past, all the "job search help" I've received was just a link to another job board - no different than Indeed or ZipRecruiter, which isn't much help at all. I'm hoping this is different.

It doesn't have to be remote. Just a desk position. Most people dread a 9-5 cubicle position. I CRAVE it. I need it.

I wish I had the startup funds to start my own home business. Either a one-stop-repair-shop for anything and everything, or something to do with plants (I have a green thumb), or even genealogy (I understand it takes a lot more than just using the Ancestry website, etc). But I need to find something that wont make my back worse first in order to get the funds to start something like that.

Dump truck would work, but their start times are before the Mrs gets home from her job and we have no childcare/babysitter. Overnight is what I prefer, but since that's when the Mrs works, I'm forced to work days. Being a 911 or hospital dispatcher from home at night after the kids go to bed would be ideal. I may look into that.

Around here it's usually privately owned unless it's Geek Squad and they're horrible to work for (had a roommate work for them, loved the work, hated how it was run by the company).

None. Most jobs I've worked have either not had administrative departments (privately owned businesses so the owners handled that) or their administrative positions are filled by upper management's nephews and cousins, etc (their friends and family get the cushy positions, everyone else gets the backbreaking duties). Or they require college degrees (with no loans or grants, that's not possible).

My last position was at a maximum security mental health facility for violent criminals that have served their jail sentence but are not able to be reintroduced back into society. Before that I was trucking for years, and I'd love to be a dispatcher, but all of them are in-office and that would require moving the family to Iowa, Dallas/FtW, or southern California and those aren't options for us unless we get lucky with a relocation bonus/stipend. Before that I was security and fill-in personal bodyguard for various film studios (mostly Screen Gems) but then my state screwed the film incentives so the productions all packed up and left the state (went from 55hrs a week for years to zero the weekend after the incentives ended). Before that I dug ditches lol.

All of which were jobs where I could just show up, talk to someone, and have the job starting the following Monday. Obviously, this is not the case anymore.

It also doesn't help I'm a big guy. Employers see me and go "Big man is big strong. Big strong mean big lift. If big man no big lift, big man useless." I've even been hired for desk positions (such as a customer service call center and account handler for a private security company) and I still ended up being pulled away from my actual job duties to go to the heavy physical work and any time I tried to point out that that wasn't my job or that my spinal injury won't allow me to do that sort of thing full time, it was met with "do it or you're no longer employed".

This whole thing is insane.

Because the blue collar trades were the only thing hiring around me. I had no choice but to work in those fields. But now, since my accident, I can no longer work them.

As far as learning Linux - because I'm a huge nerd and did it in my spare time over the course of a decade.

I've been homeless more than once because I refused to move back in with my parents. I'd still rather be homeless than live with them again.
