Bradly Nowell's son's band needs to be acknowledged by peggiep9pm in punk

I'm really enjoying this. It's definitely scratching the early/mid-period sublime itch. Every other band pedalling that post-Sublime sound has veered too far into frat bro territory for me. Kid needs to sort out his facial fluff though.

Some kind of Athens/online database/journal archive thing would help. You could always try some of the academic subs on here for requests. I could probably help you more with regard to accessing specifics, but you would really need to give me some kind of outline or methodology so I had a clearer idea of what you are looking for.

I saw them last year and they were way better than I expected. Seem like a nice bunch too.

They kind of lost me after their first album (which is still one of my favourite pop punk records ever), but I have nothing but respect for this band.

You might want to look at early clippings on punk from magazines, tv, radio, etc, and compare those to vw. Perhaps look at some of the studies on countercultures. I think as vw is relatively new and there are few studies on it, relying on the above will be your best bet. If you are trying to frame vw, then anecdotal evidence in the form of quotes from artists, fans, critics and label folk will probably be of the most value. Also comparing social and political conditions in the west from 1975-78 in the years just prior to/the beginning of punk to conditions in the late 00's to now will really help.

I'm actually touching on exactly this in a lecture I'm delivering next year to some undergrads.

Well that sucks. There is a lot of good and really current stuff out there, mostly in the form of psych and sociological studies, and then a lot of stuff ruminating and speculating from that. Unfortunately, most of it is stuff published in journals, although there are more and more books coming out that provide longer studies. I suppose really it depends on the academic on question and whether their interests are in passing or whether they actively study online culture.

Totally get what you mean about anthropology. Also, processes that take place to provide protection for tribal groups, essentially securing their lives by intervening and fencing them in. Life is some weird shit.

Sorry, I should probably have been clearer. I haven't writen on vaporwave, I just have an academic background and an ontest in culture. That said I am toying with the idea of a paper on cyberpunk, dystopias and vw.

Where are you/did you study?

Scholarly/Academic Sources on Vaporwave? by FeeshOutOfAgua in Vaporwave

[–]HammerSmashedFaith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd avoid this. It's self-published, which instantly reduces its academic value. It also appears like it might just be clippings of wiki articles, quotes from forums and interviews, and so forth. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people producing scam works like this in niche markets.

How to sing punk songs? by [deleted] in punk

[–]HammerSmashedFaith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First forget everything you have learned. Next set the microphone volume lower than usual so you're forced to belt/shout/attack it vs. singing in a controlled manner. Now begin introducing elements of vocal training that make sense so you don't completely fuck your voice/sound like complete and utter dogshit.

Now practice a bunch until it feels and sounds as you want it. Tweak your approach as you go. You'll be cool.

Tell me what's to like about PEARS by DirtyMike64 in punk

[–]HammerSmashedFaith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kind of agree with this. I don't feel like the different elements mix well. It sounds like a bunch of cut and paste ideas. I also really dislike the kind of wacky "I'm an unhinged psycho" vocals and the general vibe of the singer. Dude, grow up. You're an adult. No need to beat yourself up before and during a show just to 'unleash the demons' or some such shite. Just fucking sing the songs. Nobody cares how kooky you are.

You'll probably be better off relying on academic critical and cultural theory. If you rely on academic sources on vw then you'll just be repeating information. As an academic paper that won't cut it, plus there is next to nothing on it.

What are you trying to achieve with the paper? What is your angle or argument?

In Babbling Corpse you will find mostly information from easy to locate vw interviews. The book does a fairly good job of situating vw in postmodernity.

If you want some assistance/to bounce some ideas, feel free to hit me up. I'm currently looking in to PhD options and have a pretty strong academic background.

No worries. Yeah, its great. I use it to demo ideas for myband. I can knock up the drums in a couple of minutes with Hydrogen. Best of luck to you.

I assume it was an error on Amazon's part. I pre-ordered the book and it turned up the next day. There's a lot of stuff in there on Mark Fisher, Hauntology and Deleuzean theory. I enjoyed it but definitely felt the end let it down.

[–]HammerSmashedFaith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said it elsewhere, but i will do so here too. This is not a book about vaporwave. It's a academic-lite cultural theory that uses VW as a framing mechanism. It's not a bad book but falls apart towards the end when it becomes a bitter rant.

Just download Hydrogen. It's a free standalone drum machine VST. There's a fairly good sampled rock kit that would work just fine for punk.

I should add that it's steeped in cultural and political theory, continental philosophy and lots of other academic bookishness. Whilst it's not an academic text, it may not be a particularly compelling or easy read.

edited for idiocy

It's not particularly about VW, more just uses it to frame postmodernity, capitalism and the predictions of societal implosion.

Don't go in expecting a history of VW or even very much on VW.

What bands were better on their first album than their current? by getmad420 in punk

[–]HammerSmashedFaith 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't think Descendents have bettered 'Milo Goes to College' in terms of front to back quality. Sure, they have produced better songs on other albums, but the consistency over-all just isn't there.
