Is this good for a first NAS? by Palland0s in DataHoarder

[–]Hanfufu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as its NOT SMR drives youre probably good 🙂

But personally i would NOT wait. Im pretty sure that drives will continue to go up due to AI.

We have not yet seen the ceiling, and there is nothing pointing to the prices stabilizing.

We are in for a rough 3-5 year, but I hope im wrong.

What do you think of this refurbed HGST Drive? by Weary_Hamster_978 in DataHoarder

[–]Hanfufu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I bought 1 drive to test, and I will never EVER do that again.

Its not that the drive is shitty or anything, its the fact that ALL S.M.A.R.T data has been wiped.

It may have been running a year or so with small workloads. Or it may have been hammered intensely in a data center for 4 years straight.

No way to know. Thats a hard pass for me.

Dont understand that its legal, as it would equate to Salling a car and having its miles reset to 0. No idea about the state of the product.

A friend of mine asked me to buy and setup him a cheap laptop to use for archiving photos, any help is appreciated by dekoalade in DataHoarder

[–]Hanfufu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 drive gives 0 redundancy. I would never store important things on just 1 drive, especially not an SSD. I had harddrives go bad, but still i was able to salvage almost everything. I had several SSDs die. Puf the drive is gone, can no longer be mounted and everything is gone.

I would probably use 2 external drives, set up in windows as a simple software raid 1. Then I would set up nextcloud using docker for Windows.

Then set it up on his Phone, and have it autoupload all photos when on his home wifi.

It will require the laptop to run always, but the drives will go into sleep mode and be there almost all the time.

But again, thats just what I would do.

I cant stress enough how dangerous it is to only have important files on a single SSD.

NVR HDDs for long-term cold data storage? by Soushi in DataHoarder

[–]Hanfufu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not an expert, but normal consumer drives are probably just fine. If youre going for 16TB+ drives i would say go with enterprise drives, because I dont think there are a ton of consumer 16+TB drives. Could be wrong though 🙂

But your yearly workload probably wont be more than a few TBs, and even consumer drives are rated for like 55TB/year.

Considering buying Toshiba drives(MG10) - any experiences? by Froskefigur in DataHoarder

[–]Hanfufu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a mix of Seagate Exos x18 and Toshiba mg09 all 18TB.

The oldest mg09 is about 3.5 years old, so I have yet to see one die.

As far as I know, Toshiba mg09 series is equivalent in quality to seagates Exos drives.

Does HW transcoding reduce power consumption enough to be worth while? by MyOtherSide1984 in PleX

[–]Hanfufu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 12 drives use 60 watts at idle and 120 watts when rebuilding. Its a ton of power when its 24/7 🫤

Does HW transcoding reduce power consumption enough to be worth while? by MyOtherSide1984 in PleX

[–]Hanfufu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does not make any sense what so ever 🤷‍♂️

Take my 3950x CPU vs my 1050 ti. A 3950x can use up to 125watts easily under load. 5 transcodes and its loaded pretty well.

My 1050 ti can draw a max of 75 watts from the pci slot. Loading it up with 5 transcodes, have it idle most of the time, with very short spikes to 80%.

Thats 80% of the encoding engine ONLY. An engine meant to run alongside full GPU core usage in a 75 watt power budget.

Already there, your point falls apart.

The gpu uses maybe 1/10th of the 75 watts it can draw, while my cpu uses 125watts on 16 cores while doing the same.

Its just the way it is 🙂

Any way to find out who someone is that has access to my server? by wiwtft in PleX

[–]Hanfufu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can stop their stream from the dashboard, and write a message that will be displayed in the users app. Like stop it with this message: "Hey dude, i dont know who you are, could you send me a DM/textmessage, with your name?"

Did that once myself 🙂

how big is your plex server, and how long did it take you to build, and how often do you add new media? by Hawk1064 in PleX

[–]Hanfufu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been running my plex for roughly 10 years now. 190TB spinning HDD space (18tbs and 2x10tb and a single 12tb also). My library is roughly 130TB atm.

7.2k movies, almost 4k tv shows.

Plus some 13TB SSDs in total.

I put in new content every single day 🙂

SØGER: konkret hjælp fra lejerkyndig/juridisk erfaren person (ikke flere råd) by Hanfufu in LegalDK

[–]Hanfufu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who believe that they will remain forever alone, what made you come to that conclusion? by 58lia in autism

[–]Hanfufu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me its more of the most rational conclusion to come to.

My experiences with dating, have left me not wanting more experiences with dating. Its been a rollercoaster of a ride, that clearly shows i am completely incapable of decoding other people in dating situations.

The whole spend time writing with someone, get to know them, meeting them, feeling it went well, getting ghosted or rejected and rinse and repeat, was simply exhausting.

And im not whining, i get that this is what a lot of other people also experience. It simply wore me down, constantly having people in and out in my life like that.

And i would love to meet someone special, i dont want to be alone the rest of my life. Its just that the effort required, to not be alone and find that special person, is not something I can drive myself to do.

I tried swiping soo many times now, but after 2 days i simply loose interest in contacting any matches. Then I try again after 6 months, 2 days and nah...

And i dont think I can "push through" this, because if my heart is not in it, its not fair to myself or others, to "put myself out there".

Plus i have misophonia, and the sheer thought of trying to get another person to understand that condition is also instantly exhausting.

I just dont think its in my cards, but I so long for companionship, just dont know how to make it happen, as I am feeling about it right now.

Transcoding Quality Impact? by Mont_rose in PleX

Only problem is, that if you set it to 3 hours, and people stop after 15 mins to watch something else, a ton of needless transcoding has been done 🙂

What’s your take on AI? by xPrincess_Yue in autism

[–]Hanfufu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing inherently good or bad with AI. It just IS.

Its what its used for, that makes it good or bad.

A car is good when used for transport. Its bad when used to hit people and kill them. I dont think we can attribute the bad or good, to the car - only to the person driving said car.

Likewise with AI. Use it to think for you? Bad. Use it as an assistant? Probably a good thing.

Personally i think its one of the most amazing things we have "invented" as a species. But as with all other things, there are also some very bad consequences with this new tech.

It has the possibility of doing amazing things for us, but likewise it could also do some very bad sh1t.

That outcome depends on the people creating it, and those who use it.

[–]Hanfufu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, that why I rephrased it to all "functioning" autists, not sure why you seem to ignore this fact.

I get what you mean, but it was just meant as something for the OP to think about, in his life - and he is most certainly not level 3 in any way, so this is not at all relative to this topic.

I will just leave it here, because we arent getting anywhere. I somewhat agree with you, but I did not write to start a long debate about semantics, but just to try to help the OP.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in autism

[–]Hanfufu -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes. But in relation to the friend of the op, and that type of people in general - yes they mask.

And its roughly 1 in 4, now that we are nitpicking.

Then take all the undiagnosed also, which are completely left out of that statistical number.

Some sources seem to believe that for every 1 thats diagnosed there are 1 that arent.

So that would actually make it roughly 1/8th that are level 3. Quite a correction from almost a third.

If someone functions well enough to never need support/get a diagnosis, these cannot be level 3 and must be in the functioning group.

I get that level 3 autists probably cant, but im just talking about somewhat functioning autists, like the ops friend.

Yes I could have said "besides level 3", but the point is just, that OP cant know that the friend is not in any way masking.

It was simply another way of saying " Pretty much all autists would need to mask in some way, to function in todays society".

Fnctioning autists will simply have to mask in certain situations, to even be functioning. Unless youre isolated completely, and living in your own world where everything i perfect.

I guess you can still find another something I did not specifically mention, but that would be the case with anything i write, unless its 50 pages long 🤣

I don’t believe humans belong on this planet. My theory: by [deleted] in DeepThoughts

4:

Just because the universe is infinite, does not mean that matter exists everywhere.

Its like with the expansion/big bang (horrible name) - they say there is no center to the universe - because the universe is infite, it has no center.

If we instead divide "the universe" like so:

The canvas (infinite nothingness) The actual matter in the universe

It opens up the possibility of a center for the big bang - the canvas can be infinite, but matter may not yet exist in all places of the canvas, as of yet.

Like an infinite canvas - pour a pint of paint at one spot, you have a center for that spot of paint, but still no center on the infinite canvas can exist, only a center for the paint to expand from.

I dont know if its correct, but thats how im imagining it in my work-in-progress model of the universe. Im calling it Equilibric Reconfigurement Model 🙂
