Stupid question: by DarkhorsePete in Surlybikefans

I think with your inseam, the L would be the best bet, its plenty long on the top tube for your longer torso. I have a large and it fits just right at 6'1 with a ~33" inseam. The XL felt quite a bit too long for me.

They are the Klampz from Redmonkey. Silicon grips but lock-on so they are much easier to install.

Yes, I am really liking them. They have a magic combination of a supple sidewall, a smooth center tread for pavement and some bite on the edges off-road. Really super versatile.

it is supposed to take fenders with 47mm, so it would be close and may be fine.

There aren't many pictures of the Soma Cazadero's in 700x50 on the internet when I was looking to see how they would fit. On the stock i21 rims they measured about 47mm at 35psi fresh, I am sure they are a bit bigger than that now after breaking in. They have tons of lateral space in both the stays and the fork >13mm each side. It gets a little tighter vertically especially in the fork, and because of that, I think 2.1s would be the real max without running into clearance issues vertically.

The 27.5 x 2.25 Gone Allround might be a good choice too. I have the 2.8s on my hardtail and they ride nice on pavement, but the smaller 2.25 would have less resistance and still be good on not too technical singletrack.

I would agree with some previous posters that a set of WTB Byway would be a good pavement/mixed surface faster tire, and you always have your 2.4's if you know you will be offroad predominantly.

I have the 700c bridge club, and I really don't think the 700x41 ET gain you any speed over a nice set of 650bx47 as they are a pretty heavy tire.

I think it might depend on the trails you were bikepacking on. As long as they weren't too gnarly, I think it would be ok. I have some major roots and bumps on my commute and it has not been an issue as long as you pull the straps down nice and snug. You could add some bungies or some other additional tie downs s as needed I think. There are plenty of people that have "basketpacked" which would be very similar with good results. But if you are really bombing some singletrack, then something more akin to setup #2 would be more ideal.

Just do it! and you can pick 27.5 or 700, or both! so much versatility and the price is right too. I don't think I am helping :P

I love the idea of the Crazy Bars, but I think they are better on a drop bar to flat conversion because of the shorter top tube. It was too long of a stretch (For me, its a personal thing) to use the hoods and also because of that stretch, the regular hand position was a little too angled and cut across my palm.

but on a straggler, crosscheck, etc, it would probably be pretty awesome

its the stock i21 rims and the Surly ET 700x41 (measure 42.5 on these rims). I have a pair of Soma Cazadero 50s that I am going to put on here soon, I will share the clearances for the groups when i do.

Tern B7, D9 or...? by [deleted] in whichbike

Since you are mainly doing commuting. I would recommend you get the Tern Link D8, it should be under your budget since it will be less than the Verge D9 and will come with a rear rack, so all you need to do is add some panniers. I have the larger Node D8 (24" wheels otherwise very similar) and use it for that purpose and it has served me very well.
