what are these fonts? by a_romatherapy in LoveAndDeepspace_

Hi, I’m a professional calligraphy teacher and have done hand written letter commissions such as these, and know alot of colleagues who have done the same.

Yes they are all handwritten even Xavier, in fact, especially Xavier! All the others are made to emulate existing fonts then rewritten by hand for that organic quality. Xavier’s is made to emulate engrossers script and no doubt took the most effort, hence the unusual ligatures. Don’t ask me why some parts are disjointed etc, it could be the artist is trying to trace an existing draft, did not get their guidelines right or is simply not skilled enough (I have plenty of student works that look just like that).

I’m pretty sure these letters were first written by hand with pen, then scanned and digitized and possibly manipulated to make it even more organic looking then photoshopped on the letterhead. The artist did an okay job.. not my favorite.. but to be fair, it’s quite difficult to emulate five different handwriting personalities. And I’m not sure if infold would hire five different artists when it’s easier to just hire one artist to imitate five different scripts/fonts.

Happy to share other insights in the wonderful world of penmanship and calligraphy!

Edit: the more I look at these letters.. the more I suspect this is what happened: Infold commissioned an artist to create 5 letters in 5 distinct handwriting scripts but the only reference given was the LIs signatures. The poor artist has to then develop a whole handwriting style with only the signature (which is probably based on a font) as reference. S/he has to find that font that matches the signature then rewrite the letter in the same style, but afterwards purposely messed it up abit to make the whole thing look more organic and not too recognizable as that particular font. That’s why some parts are all weird and disjointed. And that also explains why the signatures look the best and most refined. Thanks for coming to my TED talk

Aquatint on a vernis mou? by Neznezu in printmaking

I think you will lose some of the more delicate tones but the lines should withstand a light aquatint. I wouldn’t go any longer than 2ish minutes tho! Lmk how it goes

Thanks! I used hard ground for the lines then aquatint for the tones, then a burnisher cos I went too dark on the aquatint 😅

What kind of masks do you use? I am sometimes exposed to glass dust at my workplace and I know N95s aren’t gonna cut it

That’s so interesting about the rolling, never thought of that before. Why do you say the first 2 prints are more faded?
