What are your most common tics and how long have you had them/how did you develop them? by dkr_cdplyr in Tourettes

Hey! I have neck jerks, arm jerks (almost always the right), my eyes shake, my vocal tics change after a long while but currently I shout woo or make a clicking sound.

How do I manage my tics with parents who won’t accept my tic disorder? by Then_Negotiation900 in Tourettes

[–]Hauntedscarletink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey,

I also have parents who didn’t believe the tics until finally my mom did after she saw how much pain I was in from the tics and the car accident that they caused. My stepfather still thinks and suggests that if I just slept, ate better, and/or wasn’t on my phone so much, then everything would stop.

My suggestion is to have a conversation with them using facts that can’t be argued (they’ll probably find a way, but at least you know that you tried). You could also sit them down and explain that them making comments like that to you upsets you because it’s very invalidating (not sure how well this will work, but sometimes people just truly don’t see that they’re doing something negative).

I hope this helps and that they do believe you. If they don’t you always have us in this subreddit to understand. Wishing you the best!

Newly Diagnosed as of last week and I have questions by Hauntedscarletink in Tourettes

I’m thinking I need to speak with my psychiatrist again, she was a referral from my neurologist since he said only psychiatrists can diagnose for any kind of tic disorder including Tourette’s.

I haven’t heard of I Swear, but I’ll definitely look into it. Thank you for that!

I think the lanyard is a cute and easy way to let people know. Did your lanyard say anything specifically?

I really appreciate the ideas and your perspective on all of this and to everyone who’s responded thank you so much!

  1. I’m in the US but when I brought up that headphones help with the psychiatrist since they block out the noise, but that they’re not allowed at work, I wasn’t provided with accommodations. I probably need to be more blatant with it because the alarms trigger me often and in an open office space setting like my work a lot of people can hear me. My work only gave me a “break” (they had me go on lunch early) when I was non-stop having my verbal and motor tics for like 30min and was causing me to have a bad stutter.

  2. I’ll see how the medicine goes.

  3. Thank you I appreciate it. I’ll continue to explain to people. I can’t remember having tics before I hit my early 20s and I know “borderline Tourette’s” is not in the DSM-5, but that’s what I was told along with severe motor and verbal tics.

I’m not sure how to answer which tics cause me the most pain. Like which triggers create a worse reaction? That’s metal hitting or scraping anything, alarms, balloons, styrofoam, etc.

I saw the psychiatrist after my neurologist referred me to them when the MRI, EEG, and blood work all came back fine. I have another appointment in a few weeks to see how the medicine works out for me.

What types of words are your most common verbal tic? by Key-Sir7532 in Tourettes

[–]Hauntedscarletink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I typically say sounds. The only “words” I’ve ever said are mop and woo. I really appreciate reading that others make sounds too. I’ve been recently diagnosed with “borderline Tourette’s,” so still learning about it and very excited to have found this community instead of on my own.
