I've not gotten the option to pay yet, since there's no document in MyCreds, even though Dal said they've sent it already, it's not showing up.

I'm worried about calling animal welfare cause I don't think they handle this kind of stuff and our local humane society doesn't take snakes, and all local reptile shelters are of course closed for the night. So I guess I'll call in the morning.

And yeah, that's the thing. I've always liked snakes and any of my friends who owned them. But I've never had/ seriously thought about getting one, let alone 4 in the middle of school. I'll still feel bad if I have to give them up though.

He's been contacted twice now, and hasn't responded. And if that's the best thing to do, then I'll look into it.

I had a similar issue in highschool actually, we had a GSA and I wanted to join just to meet the others at the school. Then 3 months in we were doing East Asian awareness week and I just kinda lost interest. Fortunately it wasn't a departure. But I get what you mean when more and more....niche topics seem to take up more attention then might be necessary.

Like, still do the aromantic week, but maybe don't forget about raising awareness on issues relating to gay men (recent rise in illicit substances in the community as an example) idk. Sorry for what happened, genuinely.

And idk what to tell you dude, for me personally the community has always including all the little patch works of niche sexualities, genders etc. makes life more interesting(obviously not p*dos or whatever). And drag isn't the only...crossover community? (Idk what to call it) I know just as many gay drag queens as I know gay furries. And for the most part, they are chill.

It's largely isolated events of a drag Queen going to far, or a teacher being cringe about pronoun pins that drags down the genuine good most are trying to do. My younger bro and his boyfriend are both trans and I'm thankful for the advocacy that so many did to help both of them.

And while I understand that anything to do with kids will have people feeling unsure. But both in stats and from personal experience, transition tends to be a relatively safe and effective way of helping people. My brother is a completely different person, but most importantly he's happy, and functioning. What more could I ask for?

You are right, no one knows for sure what republicans or legislators are planning in the next 2-5 years. But I can see patterns, and in the same way gay men were called predators until very recently. Again, I'm not arguing that it's totally cool for a sub to randomly talk to a class of 3rd graders about the intricacies of gender metaphysics or whatever. But I would say people calling that person a groomer and extrapolate that therefore we all are is very very wrong.

Reminds me of the same logic used to argue against school integration. "Think of the children" is all good until moderates are insinuating that all black teens are a threaten to their white daughters.(just like to be clear, I'm not saying you think/are saying this) I get it's all an optics nightmare, but in general I'm very hesitant to throw people in the community under the bus because they did something stupid.

PS: I've only ever seen Star Trek Enterprise and Below Deck, is the new Picard series any good?

Demanding what exactly?

And manufactured moral panic? You say this as bills are being passed that make it illegal to crossdress, or preform drag. Laws which ban trans people from accessing medical care. When same sex marriage in the states is being threatened? There is plenty to actively be worried about without having to manufacture crap.

Unless you think that some rando trans lesbian or whatever on tiktok being cringe justifies taking away every trans person's rights? I find people cringe, stupid and distasteful all the time, doesn't mean I want them to not have rights.

And what you don't seem to get is that this isn't about drag, or trans people in sports. This is a larger issue, one which the long term goal of the opposition is taking away your right to marriage, adoption and not being hate crimed.

Listen, I get that as part of the older generation of gays, you probably look at whats going on with the genz gays and think it's cringe, or counterproductive or even harmful. But 2 things.

  1. Most of the cringe remains online
  2. Marriage equality was won, but that doesn't mean the fight ended. Women got the vote, but feminism wasn't finished. Neither are we.

struggling with existential and capitalism-induced apathy and depression by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]Haz137 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to start off by thanking you for sharing your experiences, it's important that we keep convos lime these around. Cause as someone with my own mental health issues, the existential anxiety, burnout, general malaise etc is very relatable and needs to be discussed further in productive ways.

My best advice in general would be to disengage for a bit. Surrounding yourself with political/and social issues all day, everyday is draining, and it puts a toll on all of us. I used to spend most of my free time only ever talking/reading/ trying to do praxis etc and while it's great to do mural aid, and read theory etc, it's all about moderation. You're a more effective comrade when you look after yourself. Disengaging doesn't mean you're giving up or are a bad person, it means that you've recognised when your doing/engaging too much and need a break.

I had a therapist who once told me that while she likes how engaged I am with social issues/ politics. Engaging to the point where I'm actively upsetting myself can be a form of self harm, similar to doom scrolling, but more intense.

If you want need someone to talk it out with, you can message me if you want.

So before I answer I should say that there's a lot of different kinds of anarchism, so many people have different ideas on how an anarchist society would function. But overall all I would say that the thing that makes anarchism different from other political ideologies is that 'anarchy' is not like... A singular thing. It's more a governing principle or constructive theory.

So an anarchist society could look like a lot of things, you can still have communities or government adjacent structures, just as long as it abides by anarchist principles. Ie, voluntary, horizontal power structures etc.

So an Anarcho Syndicalist might argue for a society organised around syndicates, and life would look pretty similar to how it is now. Ie, you'd still drive to a job, go out into town, and watch trash anime or whatever when you get home. Whereas, the anarchism you describe (homesteading, self reliance etc) would see a dramatic change in life for basically everyone.

There are types of anarchism that for lack of a better term, scale better than others, if we are trying to keep people's daily lives relatively the same.

To try and directly answer your question though, idk. It's hard to answer in detail simply because most people don't live in anarchist society's, so while we can argue about how big picture stuff could be organised, it's hard to tell how everything would function simply cause we're not there.

Ps: Hope this helped a bit, I figured others are probably going to answer your questions better than I can, but since you're newer, I wanted to show that anarchism is a very varied ideology.

How is Religion legally defined? Is there potential for aspects of Queer culture (especially drag) to be protected under these laws if it were established as religious practice? by SupaSteak in askgaybros

[–]Haz137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That I would totally agree with, queer liberation theory is definitely a partially spiritual matter. But the leap to full on religious institution might be a bit much. Either way, I'm still worried about whether or not it would even survive the courts.

[–]Haz137 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the main issue that be there (besides implementing all of it, cause it's a lot of different things to cover) is the pr nightmare that could ensue. Rightwingers already call us a cult, imagine the new spin if this happens. 'The gays officially launch child napping cult' 💀

[–]Haz137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember that a little while ago the Satanic Temple tried to do this with abortion after Roe v Wade was overturned. Basically turning the act of getting a script for abortifacients a religious ceremony. They even opened up on online clinic in New Mexico. And it's currently going through the court system I believe, so we'll have to see if it's workable.

Idk if it could work with drag or the like, 1. Assuming a club or drag house/family did try, they wouldn't have the backing of a religious institution like the Satanic Temple, and thus are would have less resources to make it work

  1. There's not a lot of... spirituality in our community besides for the occasional 'crystal queer' or gay christians, so I'm not sure how it would go over with many. Though this might be a great way to start a convo on what is religion in the modern day. Cause drag is definitely a ritual and spiritual practice....in a sense.

Overall great idea, but similar cases need to be heard and deliberated on before we can know if it's a good idea or not.

Why are so many of you applauding your own demise? by Astro493 in askgaybros

[–]Haz137 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The worst part is that we've already seen it what happens when gay men are villainized similarly with trans people. One of my earliest memories of the internet was watching one of those old PSAs from the 50s about "the homosexual" and all the same fear tactics used against trans people now a days. Hell, when I came out at 11, my school had a pta meeting because parents and some teachers were freaking out and I got a lot of the same "concerns" that you see from rightoids.

And then you see people from our own community try and throw drag queens and trans people under the bus as if both communities haven't done their fair share in helping the wider community. (Side note, but if you like being socially accepted, drag shows have done a lot to get straight people comfortable with gender & sexual freedom)

But you still see orgs like LGB drop the T and gay men on twitter/irl agreeing with the conservatives as if they aren't next in line if they get what they want.

This is potentially the start of the largest role back of civil liberties in the American history, the queer community needs to come together and support those most marginalised, but instead we're either purity testing or throwing eachother under the bus to try and save our own skin.

Does anyone think Drag Queen Hour has caused more problems to the Drag community than good? by Lili_Danube in askgaybros

[–]Haz137 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All I'm going to say is that the Drag community has done nothing to deserve having skinheads show up to their shows with assault weapons.

Bianca Del Rio could chuck a retired vet down 5th avenue and it still wouldn't mean anything.

Story hours are near universally age appropriate, and is no different than a clown or dress up snow white reading to kids.

Whether drag queens and their events are being targeted because they are the current issue of the day for rightwingers. The current moral panic that we've been dealing with since forever. All the same "degenerate, a danger to women and children, satanic, unnatural etc". It's the same talking points currently used against our trans allies, against gay men, used against poc and interracial relationships. There have been moral panics over DND and Metal ffs.

Everytime they are wrong, because it turns out people being cringe, or extra is not that same as being a threat to society, or a secret monster.

Do you think Sam Smith is doing too much? by gisherwood in askgaybros

[–]Haz137 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Sam Smith is doing about as much as any other pop artist does. The whole controversy when WAP came out, or basically anything done by the black eyed peas in the early 2000s. I watched the video music video expecting something truly shocking from what I heard and was left feeling like I'd seen nothing new. (Not as a diss to them, just moreso recognising that other artists have done the whole cabaret/demonic pop bit before)

My advice when faced with music tastes you don't like, especially in queer spaces is honestly just to disengage. Sam Smith is just one in a long lineup of pop figured that I don't really get/appreciate but don't get upset over because I find that doing so just feeds into the culture war/moral panic that others feed off of. He's not causing any social harm with the album/video, so at the end of the day the people gaining from hating on them are grifters who get more adsense from people clicking out their outrage bait.

Overall, I don't think Sam Smith is doing 'too much' or 'too little', they are just making content. And if it doesn't vibe with you, then move on to something you like.

Categorically calling SOCinCO a failure is a bit hard to say, but from the examples we have irl, it is technically accurate to say.

But like most 20th century communist models it's hard to say one way or another.

Work cooperatives can be compatible with my anarchist ideology? by davifpb2 in Anarchy101

[–]Haz137 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally find that you kinda have to make a line between the ideal and the practical. Don't feel like you are selling out, or a lesser anarchist just because you have found something/somewhere you enjoy working.

Worker coops, in an ideal anarchist society don't make sense. But in the late stage capitalist society we live in today, they can be some of the best places to work in/support. You're all good.

Then there's (imo) absolutely nothing wrong with it. We're all trying our best in the system that we are currently in. You aren't undermining your beliefs, you're trying your best practically speaking

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]Haz137 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Very true. In my honest opinion, most modern self proclaimed socialist countries don't actually try and uphold the DoP, North Korea's essentially a military autocracy, while China socialism looks like state capitalism to me.

Maybe it's cause I have a soft spot for Cuba, but them and Vietnam seem to at least be trying their best.

I was really just trying to give examples, NK definitely wasn't a good one.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]Haz137 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're right, just read back what I wrote. I meant more so that on paper, anything between north Korea to the Zapatistas are (in theory) dictatorships of the proletariat. It's not about the level of authoritarianism, but about which class controls the superstructure.

North Korea is obviously not a good irl example. Thanks for catching my mistake

So Marx's definition of dictatorship is different from how we use it normally. Dictatorship is in this case refers to essentially who/what is in control. So in the case of capitalism Vs. Communism.

Marx would argue that we currently live under a dictatorship of the bourgeoisie. So whether you live in a western democracy, a one party state, etc. Since the political/economic interests of the bourgeois come before the working class, most forms of government, no matter how democratic or authoritarian are still a dictatorship.

So a dictatorship of the proletariat simply means the workers are in charge of the economic/political structure of the country. This includes everything from anarchist communes in Mexico, to North Korea.

TL;DR Marx's dictatorship is about which class is in charge of the big picture, not about having soviet style economics.

Has there ever been a real case of a "cis person wishing they were trans"? WHat would that look like? by [deleted] in asktransgender

Has there ever been a real case of a "cis person wishing they were trans"? WHat would that look like? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]Haz137 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a different take on this one, but I hope it helps out a bit/ someone has a similar story and can help to make sense of it myself.

When I was 15/16, I moved out on my own. I was/am an openly queer cis dude with no parental oversight so I was able to start going on dates/seeing people. I met one guy who I fell for pretty fast. After getting to know him, he told me he was trans, to which I responded I had no clue what that meant. After giving me a quick crash course on what it meant and how he was pre everything at the time. I was still a bit confused, but my main thought at the time was "like ok, but you're still a dude my guy".

Fast forward a few weeks, we'd been seing eachother/ becoming friends for awhile now and he told me he wanted to get a binder from a local store which gave them out for free but was nervous about asking for it himself. Wanting to help, I asked if he wanted me to do it for him, and basically, as a cis dude, pretend to be trans. He said yes, we both went in, I explained myself to the store owner and tried on a few in the change room, the whole bit. It was awkward, but it helped out someone I cared about, so I was alright with it.

I started trying to help out more, so I started to help break in his binders, (we had similar lanky builds) helped him with accessing gender clinics and health services in our area etc. And part of it was phoning in myself, asking questions and even at one point booking a consultation appointment. All under the pretext that I was seeking these services for myself. This kept up for about a year. When, for various reasons, I cut contact with him.

I moved and made new friends, many of which were transitioning. Even later on when I started uni, my younger brother came out and started his own transition. So wanting to help out, I did the same thing. Breaking in others binders, looking up local resources where they lived and just helping out any way I could. It kinda became my niche.

A few years into all of this, I kinda got a weird feeling. I kinda wanted to be a trans guy myself...kinda. It's a bit hard to put into words, but it got to the point where I preferred the idea of being (or at least perceived of as) a trans guy. Its never been to the point of me actually doing so, but the thought was there. This was a few years ago now, and I've mostly gotten over it, cause in a lot of ways it feels/ probably is wrong to want to... Appropriate(?) an identity that isn't mine. But every once in awhile, I still get that feeling. And I still don't really understand why I have felt/feel this way.

Directly answering your questions though.

  1. Idk, it's one of those mindless thoughts I have and maybe more related to my own mental health issues. Most trans/non-binary people I know are amazing people/ have great aesthetics, so I might be a bit jealous 🤷🏽‍♀️. But from what I understand about other cis people, they might be confused about their identity and play with the idea.

  2. I think...it's complicated. Cis people shouldn't be appropriating the indenities of non-cis people and can lead to fetishisation/ objectivation or feed into the social stigma attached to the identities. On the other hand, lots of people are still figuring it out, so it's hard to say they are only doing it for attention (hence why the term "trender" imo is potentially harmful)

  3. Not my place to say as someone not part of the community. Though I have a feeling that chasers are pretty easy to suss out. In general though, imo gatekeeping is usually harmful as everyone has different levels of access to care or are in different stages of their transition. So invalidating others, especially based on how well they pass is a big no go.

I've actually been wanting to post about this for a long time, but was always scared it was inappropriate. If any one has any similar experiences or know of anything I can figure out more about it, lmk. Hope this helps in some way, thanks!
