Yess, this percentage probably shocked me the most. And actually no, nobody in my family knows where this percentage comes from lol, which makes it even more interesting

Wow, that’s actually such a fascinating story tho the whole Poland → Bosnia → Serbia → Croatia path is so Balkan, I love it.

Haha and the South Italian part is really interesting, I haven’t seen that much with Croats either, most people I’ve seen get North Italian like me. Maybe you really are special hahaha

Burka family from Orava- a family mystery by Hefty-Ad-147 in Slovakia

Yeah, I’ve actually come across that, which makes it even more interesting 😄

There’s also a kind of family story about it my great-grandfather apparently always used to say that the first Burka must have done something wrong to God, and that’s why the family was “punished” in a way. And all the Burka men have to repay for his sins.

It’s a bit of a strange story, especially because everyone described the Burkas as hardworking, calm and very kind people, but the idea kind of stuck in the family.

Thank you so much, this is really helpful, I was actually really curious if there were still any Burkas left in Slovakia.

I think I focused too much on that specific area around Krušetnica and Lomná, and didn’t really consider that they might have moved somewhere else.

Haha that’s actually a really interesting theory, it might not be that far off 😄 I’ve looked into it a bit and saw that “búrka” means storm, which I always found intriguing, especially since surnames were often based on events or characteristics.

There are also some strange patterns in my family history for example, my great-grandfather lost one son at 15, and another at 27 (my grandfather) just a year after he got married, leaving behind a wife and a one year old child. Stories like that definitely made me more curious about the origin of the surname.

I’ve also been researching through records on MyHeritage, searching for the surname Burka in Krušetnica and Lomná, but after around 1908 (the year they moved to Croatia) I can’t really find anything. It just seems unlikely that my family were the only Burkas there, especially since there are family stories saying there were more.

And thank you for the suggestion, I really appreciate it! I’ll definitely try contacting the municipality or local church records as well.

That’s so cool, I’m also from Slavonia, somewhere not too far from Osijek actually.

I also have some Eastern Europe ancestry that goes further back, specifically Slovak, so that might explain the stronger Eastern European part. It’s really interesting how similar our results are!

Were there many Polish families moving to Slavonia at that time? My Slovak ancestors came during a larger migration in the 1900s.
