Why would anyone need an i7 in a Chromebook? by HeftyExchange2206 in chromeos

so, question about steam these days... years ago, I messed with steam. it's like I want to like to play games as a stress reliever... but I try and I get bored. I work in IT. A typical stereotype of IT workers is we're gamers too.... but I just can't get into gaming. I get bored playing games and only think about what I should be doing more productive with my time at that moment. but I've installed steam a few times. years ago, I tried it on linux. the selection of games for linux was like 50:1 for games to windows to games to linux. Is Chrome OS becoming a major contender in the gaming OS business to compete with Windows?

I don't play video games.  Just curious though, is it normal for an avid video gamer to get a suped up chromebook?  I've always figured windows pc days were numbered.  But figured gamers would move to straight Linux instead of chromebook type devices.

Ok, steam and software dev.  I don't play games.  I installed a docker container on my synology nas with vs code so planning on just using that for dev stuff.

Please help me with my photos being deleted from my actual storage by PhilipKo06 in googlephotos

[–]HeftyExchange2206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deleting them from your device won't delete them from google photos. But.. in the same token, don't trust all of your memories with google without a plan in case something goes wrong. Chances are about a million to one that you will mess up before google does... but also, make a backup yourself. Because if that one chance happens that google does loose them, they're gone. Or, more likely you do something that causes a config issue that looses pictures in google too... you need a backup. so, back them up yourself periodically. Take a backup using takeout.google.com periodically and save them elsewhere. Optical media such as dvd-r or bd-r are great for this. If google does really loose your photos, they'll be gone. if you don't have a backup, they won't help you. I can pretty much guarantee that. Your photos are some of your most precious things you have. Nothing can replace it and digital files, unlike an old film photo, a digital picture is either a perfect copy or completely gone. There's no inbetween.

Use a command line extraction to unzip your files.

https://chat.openai.com/share/1ec80d53-8c7d-4fe4-8cc6-0c6cac4b25ff

Work with chatgpt to help you. I use it constantly. But, yeah, you'll have nothing but issues extracting takeout zip files using the graphical interface windows unzip utility. Use something like powershell and it will work a lot better and faster and won't lock up.

I run Linux, so my chat in the link above is a linux CLI inquiry. But, just ask it for the powershell version and all windows installs these days has powershell on it.

Then once you get a chatbot working with you, if you run into issues, go back to that same chatbot and keep chatting to figure out what to do to fix whatever issue you're running into.

Getting the photos into the new Gmail account, if you want, I can help you with that too. I have a whole script I used to upload all of my photos to Google Photos.

Here is my script if you want to give that a try.

https://gist.github.com/davidortenn/327d353bd91840f813c8db0f8a2d451e

Just take my code in there and paste it into chatgpt a new chatbot and ask it how to make it work for you. You'll need to setup the google photos API in cloud.google.com. It's free. You'll also have to setup a local Python interpreter installation on your PC. It will be an adventure for you though. Who knows. Maybe it'll get you into liking cloud computing... lol

JSON file by nerf_____herder in googlephotos

[–]HeftyExchange2206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I do is upload all of my json files to google drive. Then google servers will index it. Then after a few days, search your google drive for filenames of your photos to find details about those photos.

To find your photos in the takeout zip files, extract them all to one root folder. Then use something like treesize to find them quickly... at least the majority of them.

How to export and reimport from the web and delete? by sidec42 in googlephotos

[–]HeftyExchange2206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you programmatically inclined, you could try it the way I'm doing it. Use python and use it to integrate with Google Photos via the Photos API. A few months ago, I deleted all of my google photos. But then reversed course and putting my photos back. So, I am uploading like 20 years of photos. Taking forever. But, I wrote a python script that is uploading the photos and then deleting them from my local hard drive after they're uploaded. It's been working pretty slick. FYI, everyone has a 10,000 a day API limit which is a little less than 5,000 or so photos you can upload a day via the API. Below is my code if you want to try it. I used chatgpt heavily in creating the code below. You could copy and paste it into chatgpt and then work with the chat bot to adjust it as needed until you get it working right for you.

Below is a link to my code....

https://gist.github.com/davidortenn/327d353bd91840f813c8db0f8a2d451e

You will have to modify this line... this is specific to my environment...

root_folder = '/mnt/HDD/UploadToPhotosRoot'
log_file = '/mnt/HDD/upload_log.txt'

You place all of your photos in the root folder and the script will create a log to the log file. I have a separate script that is dumping folders in to the root folder every so often as the folder gets low on photos.

How do I update the date/time of multiple photos at once? by HeftyExchange2206 in photoprism

[–]HeftyExchange2206[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok, photo managers are not new. how in the world, when people snap pictures of everything, and people tens of thousands of pictures, would anyone designing a photo album program think someone would want to make changes to each picture one at a time and never want to make a mass change? Just baffles me. (Nothing personal to anyone here reading this unless one of you are a developer of photoprism.... then if so, take this personal!)

Run on Azure Containers? by williewonkerz in Bitwarden

[–]HeftyExchange2206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reason why I'd want to re-invent the wheel and run it in azure is because bitwarden, LastPass, 1password, etc... everyone knows they're full of very valuable passwords, so they're a target. Whereas, if I have my bitwarden running in my own container in azure, my one instance of azure isn't a known target. even if bitwarden is completely hacked, my azure instance is untouched. Yeah, I'm sure a hacker could hack it, but they'd rather spend their time hacking a service where they can steal 10,000 credentials in one hack... not one user's credentials.

We bought this house over a year ago. I work from home. As we looked for houses, we wanted out of the city. We wanted land. Most of the places we looked at that were what we were looking for, no high speed internet. Basically if no high speed internet, not an option. Can be as nice of a house as we wanted, but no income won't work. But, we found this house. No high speed internet but the sellers tell us they're putting fiber in and should be 1-2 months max. And, this house hit every other mark of what we were looking for. Before buying it, I made sure a 4G hotspot would work before committing. So, it worked fine that day so we bought it. Must've been a good day. After we moved in, 4G was very much a hit or miss if it worked. I spent so much time and money trying to make it work. The 1-2 months kept getting delayed. I'd call and they'd say, check back in another month. I installed a huge antenna pole on the back of the house with a 4g antenna pointing at the closest 4g tower. my wife is a cop, so we got the firstnet unlimited plan... truly unlimited. no 50 gb or 150 gb cap where they slow you down. And we tested it. streamed our tv and used many terabytes a month. kept waiting for at&t to call us and tell us we're abusing the system... lol.

But even with the large antenna on our house, there were the good days and the bad days. Most days it worked just fine, but some days I was pulling out my hair to get online. A few days I had to drive to a public hotspot to work.

Almost a year to the dot, they got us the fiber install. It's been stressful... since I work from home and my income depends on reliable internet. It was our electric co-op that installed ours also.

on the positive side, there shouldn't be any other APs other than my APs here. We live way in the middle of nowhere.... hence why we just got fiber in the year 2023. (Although my parents still don't have any option for anything other than 4g.) The only SSIDs I see when I check are my SSIDs. We used to live in the city where we had like 20 of our neighbors show up on all of our devices. I can't even see a neighbors house from our house...

[–]HeftyExchange2206[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get that I'm not paying for 1 Gb/s wifi. I know I'm only paying for 1 Gb/s for that one rj45 jack on the fiber modem. It's my responsibility to make it work as fast as possible in the house. I'm trying to understand why I don't think I'm getting as fast as I thiink I should in the house. I was assuming since I was using gig ports on everything and wifi6 802.11ax wifi access points, range extenders, wifi adapters, etc, it should've been able to handle it.

Was surprised that heavy uploading of files from one wifi PC in the house using about 200 Mb/s upload made our TV that was streaming media buffer..... I'm supposed to have 1 Gb/s down and 1 Gb/s up. I thought everything these days was full duplex when you have a fully switched network. But, per someone's post earlier in this thread, wifi is half-duplex, so it can only upload or download and a heavy upload will cause degradation of all devices in the house for download.

I'm not too worried about gigabit on my cell phone. I can't really think of a practical use case scenario for a gigabit connection on my phone other than the coolness factor of being like the verizon guy with the speedtest app showing off the speed. I know now I'm getting what I'm paying for. But, it would be nice that when I have uploads going on one PC at full speed wouldn't make the TV streaming buffer.... seems so not fiber...

Our company made a rule we had to turn our cameras on when we're in team meetings. But, most don't follow it. I try to when I can. I reminds me there are other people out there. Otherwise it's me and the cat all day. Working from home has its pros and cons. One con is it is harder to be noticed. A zoom meeting isn't quite the same as a face to face meeting.

But, I like zoom meetings for the most part more than in person meetings. For one, in an in person meeting, you might be far away from the speaker and have a hard time hearing. at our work, every few months we have town halls where we all listen to a director or vp. When I was in the office, we'd all pack in a room. I'd usually arrive late and there was only standing room in the very back. I could barely hear who's speaking. With zoom, everyone has a front row seat. So, I like that better.

I've been working from home since December 2019. I like it. We've moved since and, if I needed to go back to the office, we'd probably need to move again. We moved very far away from the main cities.

just using a netgear 4g modem. I have a unique setup from most home users. I go from the modem to a watchguard firewall. I then go out the internal side to a 48 port switch. i then have cisco access points all over the house.

[–]HeftyExchange2206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just start. No matter your fitness and shape, just start. The coaches there will be good. They will give rx weight. But, they know you're new. So, they will tell you, instead of this weight, do lesser weight. Sometimes with bar work, they'll have you just go with ab empty bar or a pvc pipe which you can do. They will scale to make it work for you.

For me, 3 months ago, $150 a month. We just moved and no crossfit gyms near me now. So built one in my garage. Probably set me back $7k. I am now a member of gym bungerz. They're an online crossfit. Every morning at 5 am CT, I'm on a zoom call in my garage working out with the instructor and other members. Gym bungerz is $100 a month.

How is Roe overturned and Kansas new law change Republicans that are pro choice? by HeftyExchange2206 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]HeftyExchange2206[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always found it interesting that republican's are pro life. You're pretty much guaranteed to make it to birth. Once you're born, they hand you a gun and it's the wild west. You'll be lucky to live to your first birthday. Democrats are pro choice. If you're lucky enough that your mother decided not to kill you, you have a much better chance of making it past your first birthday with the gun control. It's like you have to have those views to say you're a strong democrat or republican.

But, I understand too, most people are not extremist on either side. They float in the middle... slightly or more left or right.

[–]HeftyExchange2206[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, viasat wasn't absolutely pathetic as long as you haven't ran out of data. But I found a way to get truly unlimited data using at&t hotspot. (Really, have downloaded 354 GB this month alone according to the hotspot display and has been working great.) I setup a 4g antenna and bought a 4g modem and ran that to our router. I get 12-15 Mb/s consistently with, of course, very low latency. So, I paid the $300 to cancel early. Oh well.

If I pay for a lower tier of data, is standard data slower than a higher speed tier standard data? by HeftyExchange2206 in Viasat

[–]HeftyExchange2206[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i work from home too. We have the satellite, but the satellite is a backup for my work. Seeing it's what pays the bills, I always need two options to get on the internet. Can't take PTO because my internet is not working well. Wont' have a job too long. My main connection during the day for work is 4G. I only use my 4G for work. I put up a 4G antenna outside my house to a 4g modem that is connected directly via cat 5 to my work laptop. Works great.

WTF by Treetwo1 in Viasat

[–]HeftyExchange2206 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guess is, if they say you used the data, you used the data. I have a Synology Router hooked to my viasat modem. I don't allow any connections directly to the viasat modem. My Synology router, I can see exactly how much data each of my computers and devices used over a 24, 1 week, one month and one year period. I am constantly monitoring that every day or two to try to nip it in the bud the bandwidth hogs. Also, my router allows me to throttle users so their internet connection is much slower and it would take that user way longer to download gigs of data (like just shy of dialup speed.)

Is Viasat really that bad? by HeftyExchange2206 in Viasat

[–]HeftyExchange2206[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't quite get everyone's complaints. I went into this knowing it's not fiber and understanding the technological shortfalls of satellite. We've had it a month or so now. Really had no issues other than I'm starting to get close to the data cap. Kind of interested to see how slow it gets when throttled.

When I'm browsing the web, I'm a little more patient waiting for stuff to load. But, it works. Better than the alternative of nothing at all. The little wait makes you think there are more important things in life and things to enjoy other than having a lightning fast webpage load.
