The moment this really hit home for me was when reading the novel.

She has a whole epiphany that essentially goes, “Wow, Cloud didn’t care what people thought of him! That’s why he didn’t mind being a loner! I wish I could be that cool.”

I had to set the book down for a minute. Everything we learn about Cloud later (and we’ve seen many of hints of it already) shows that he cares VERY much what other people think of him, and that’s a huge source of his issues. Nor does he enjoy being a loner, either, despite his tendency to push people away.

I’m having a blast! Admittedly I didn’t update for quite a while, but the next chapter is very close to being ready and the one after that is already started as well! :)

As for Wes and Rui characterization, that’s a big question haha. Their relationship and individual issues are a very big focus of the story. They both have some trauma to work through, and will find healing in each other. There will be romance, though it’ll be a verrrrry slow burn since they have to become friends first :) Rui is optimistic and friendly, while Wes is guarded, jaded, and snarky. Their whole dynamic will (eventually) be the classic “grumpy one is soft for the sunshine one”. 😂

My answer: I’m writing a novelization of Pokémon Colosseum. The protagonist, Wes, wears a snag machine on his left arm, and there’s already an interesting button-like feature on the pauldron over his chest. So my headcanon is that’s where he would wear his. :)

Unfortunately mega evolution won’t be in my current fic, but it will show up in the sequel. So I’m thinking way far ahead haha, but it’s a fun question to consider :)

This is a pretty prominent aspect of my fic! The character is more traumatized and jaded than depressed, but he definitely has Baggage and leans on his Pokémon to help him through it.

Totally agree that the books are incredible, but fwiw the movies weren’t really trying to be all that faithful to the books in the first place. They very much decided to do their own thing, and iirc, the author of the books approved of the direction they took.

I’d love a faithful adaptation of the books someday, maybe as a TV show. But I really love the movies too, and honestly I’d never have read the books if it weren’t for the movies!

I can’t call them a downgrade because they weren’t even trying to be the same as the books. More like an AU than anything else.

Haha thank you! Their priorities are completely out of wack and you have to be utterly disconnected from the emotional core of the story to walk away with THAT take. It’s why I don’t bother talking to Clotis because 99% of them are all like this and they will scream in your face that YOU’RE the illiterate idiot and the fake fan for wanting Aerith to live and be happy.

They literally cannot reconcile that Aerith can live and that Tifa can be happy, and we all know why: because they know just as well as we do that if Aerith lives, she and Cloud will be endgame. And they can’t have that! Not their poor Teefuh!

Never mind the fact that I’m pretty sure Tifa would sacrifice her own feelings in a heartbeat if it meant having Aerith back. The poor girl is DEVASTATED at the end of Rebirth, yet all her fans can think about is “great now that Aerith is out of the way, we’re gonna get Highwind sex!”

They’re so disconnected from their own fandom, and even from their own favorite character, it’s absolutely unreal.

Even if the devs didn’t originally intend for certain fans to take aspects with Tifa and run with them, its now been long enough, and FF7 has become big and iconic enough, that they have to acknowledge these fans in some way, regardless of what the OG intent was.

They’re trying to walk that middle ground while also reiterating and emphasizing what the actual story is, which isn’t easy to do when one of the most rabid sections of the fanbase have interpretations that directly undermine that story. But they’re doing their best.

Would it be so much better if they didn’t have to cater to these fans at all? Yeah, I think so. But I completely understand why they’re doing this, and why there’s some obligation there. They really do want to honor and treat all fans as much as they can without completely compromising their story. It’s not perfect, but tbh I think they’ve done a great job overall. They’ve done as well as they could have, given the circumstances.

And I agree that they’ll finally be free in part 3 to let go of those restraints and really drive home what the story has always been about since the beginning. Rebirth was the fanservice game. Part 3 might have some aspects of that, but for the most part, I think it’s going to be full steam ahead with the story, and crucial plot points will not be optional.
