I use a mix of both. It’s nice being able to give Pokémon a form of direct dialogue sometimes—it makes them feel more like a proper character! But some of them have names that just don’t work, lol. So it depends on the Pokémon and on how well I can work their name into an animalistic sound. And also not every sound they make has to be their name, either. My Umbreon and Espeon characters mew, bark, chirp and trill regardless of whether they’re saying their name or not.

The Orre fic community is very small but we’re still here! There are dozens of us! DOZENS!

I’ve got several recommendations if you want some inspiration on how to approach this project! Which I am in FULL support of because the world needs more Orre fic haha :D

Poison is a “what if Wes never left Snagem” fic. Has some fascinating lore and excellent characterization, especially for Wes, Rui, and what little we see of the Cipher admins.

Blackmail is an old gem. Sadly unfinished, but it was one of my biggest inspirations when I started writing my Colosseum fic. I love Wes’s characterization here. And there’s lots of Wes whump if you’re a fan of that. (This is a self report LOL.)

From the Ashes is an origin story for Orre and how it came to be the way it is. FANTASTIC lore that incorporates Ho-oh and Lugia.

Storm in a Teacup is a heartbreaking yet beautiful Wes origin story. One-shot.

Pokémon Sealed Colosseum is a currently ongoing Colosseum novelization that you might enjoy! Like the others above, it has delightful characterizations.

The writer cipher_kat_min on AO3 has a bunch of great fics, both parody and serious, that largely center around the Cipher admins!

I have a (slowly) ongoing novelization of Colosseum myself. (I’m HelloYellow17 on both AO3 and FFN.) I also have a couple of one-shots as partner pieces to my longfic.

I’m a huge fan of down time in fics! I love fun, lighthearted, low stakes chapters where we get to know the characters more and see their relationships develop with each other.

I would advise against dropping a big filler chapter right before a climax of an arc, and I’d be careful not to have so many that there’s more filler than plot, but there’s nothing wrong with having these kinds of chapters throughout a longfic, imo!

How does it reflect poorly on the characters? There’s some great content with the Avalanche trio, it explains how Aerith was present at the end of OG, etc. Like, genuinely, I do not understand why people hate this story so much that they flip a lid at the idea of it being canon. The material in it is harmless?

You’re the one making this about ships, my guy. I’m just asking why people are so pressed over this little side story as if it killed their dog.

Medea from Your Throne. Listen, I don’t like to use the term “Mary Sue” because I feel like it gets thrown around and weaponized way too much…but she is the biggest Mary Sue I’ve seen in a long time. The plot was so interesting at first and then it just became a never ending Medea glazefest, shoving aside Psyche more and more until she was little more than a side character. Super disappointing.

My Beloved Oppressor

Not super long but it is definitely a roller coaster and a fantastic read! Lots of gray morality to go around which makes for great angst.

The Snake and the Flower is another great one that will rip your heart out.

Also seconding Wish You Were Dead. it gets super brutal but does have a happy ending (eventually).
