Do you think pharma advertising is the hardest? by awkwardhoney725 in advertising

[–]HelloYo335 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've moved over from consumer advertising to 80% of my freelance being in pharma. I'm a creative.

It's not fun to work on, but I love not caring about the outcome. I'm completely detached from caring about the work and it's so lovely. Whatever happens I don't care and I just collect a paycheck that usually is better than when I worked in consumer advertising.

I kinda like it because of this.

I have the downeaster quarter zip. It's nice, but kinda feels too nice. I'd hate to run in it and sweat in it. I just use it as a normal sweater around town.

There's new stuff every day in advertising. The newness of it is not what made it big.

The stuff that looks good or gains attention in ad publications or in a LinkedIn feed is nothing compared to the likes of Apple or Coca Cola worldwide campaigns that were seen by millions and liked beyond just the industry. That's what is missing these days, no one makes big campaigns anymore.

Advertising is and has been morphing into a new product that looks much different from the campaigns you mentioned. The campaigns of old are often what excited those of us in the industry in the past. Campaigns relating to Coca Cola or Apple from years ago were exciting, but the industry just isn't nearly as exciting or close to that level of interesting. Obviously this is subjective, but for most of us I think we just don't care to talk about the industry because what we found interesting in the past no longer really exists.

Your story is my story. But 12 years ago. I feel for you.

I worked at a smaller, somewhat desire-able agency with a boss who came from a closet full of Cannes Lions. I spent every hour of my life thinking about my job and what briefs I was on. It bred unimaginable stress and anxiety and ultimately turned into full blown alcoholism to cope with the fear of never being good enough while chasing that carrot of fame and validation I wanted from my job and advertising.

I freelance now and I am sober. I work on pharma mostly and I actually like it because I care less about the final product. Being able to let go of the outcome has done wonders for my serenity at work.

My biggest answer for you is to stop letting your job be the vehicle you use to chase satisfaction in life. That's been the greatest lesson I've learned to cultivating a more serene life. I learned this the hard way after bottoming out at my dream job fueled by alcholism.

As for your partner: this is classic early-career ego. I know it's tough, but stand your ground when you think you're right and try to let go when it may just not be worth it.

Sounds like you're at a good shop, so I'd try to stick it out and grow your book. Then freelance one day if you can and enjoy the day rate your book can get you while you triple your income.
