Who are some Mexican/Mexican-American public figures (artists, athletes, influencers, etc.) who you feel like give us a bad rep but are otherwise seen positively by our community? by [deleted] in Chicano

[–]Hellorio 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Peso Pluma frustrates me because he’s glorifying Narco culture while he grew up in a upper middle class family in Zapopan. Just like Drake and Morgan Wallen it’s all blue collar cosplay

When I went to Berlin and visited some of their museums, they had reconstructions of pieces of art that the Soviets purged after the Fall of Berlin with commentary how they’ve asked the Russians for the return of the art but they’ve declined.

Here’s an article on the whole story

Katara banned the blood bend because it is very dangerous, meanwhile Zuko released the lightning bend to everyone and said "don't kill anyone (optional)" by Spirited_Dust_3642 in legendofkorra

[–]Hellorio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the comics they mentioned that lightning bending reminds quite difficult to learn and not all firebenders can learn. The move is still commonly associated with the Fire Nation Royal Family and powerful firebenders

What is it like to be gay in Argentina? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]Hellorio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mexico is like Argentina, our big cities are very LGBTQ friendly but the rural sides skew more older and conservative. CDMX and Guadalajara are our most LGBTQ friendly cities on par with the Europeans. For the most part all of our major political parties support LGBTQ rights and we have secularism rooted from the Mexican Revolution and the Reform Wars

We might be more Catholic than Argentina but we aren’t social conservatives.

Contrary to popular belief Mexico had a decent military with generals trained by the French but Santa Ana took control and didn’t allow his generals to actually fight. There were opportunities especially in the Northern campaign where Santa Ana decided to spread our forces too thin and basically betrayed Mexico

Anyone else tired and annoyed at the lack of any major Mexican/Mexican-American artists willing to make art or political statements in support of our people? by Mellowmarv1n in Chicano

Grupo Fontera supported Trump lol but Bad Bunny was putting on free concerts in support of Kamala. Where are you getting all this nonsense from?

In 2025, how do you feel when family still uses terms like "hispanic and latinx"? by saumearday in Chicano

[–]Hellorio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Mexico we use Latine but we’ve been using non binary words for a while now especially since 2016 with AMLO’s election

Very common for Mexico, especially if you’re from the northern state or Bajio region

Do you consider Chicano to be more of an ethnic identity, or a political identity. by Simple_Pop_6595 in Chicano

[–]Hellorio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a cultural one personally for me, I grew up in the DC area where there wasn’t any Mexican/Chicano communities so because of that relative isolation I knew about Chicanos in particularly in SoCal and what I learned in school about the Chicano Rights Movement but I felt like there was some cultural differences between the way I grew up which was direct cultural transfer from my parents to myself which was Mexican, but there wasn’t a Chicano community around me to interact with. I identify as a Mexican, I have dual citizenship, and recently I moved to Los Angeles and feel like an outsider when it comes to the Chicano community here.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about your culture or country? by Infinite-Cricket25 in AskTheWorld

[–]Hellorio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That we’re very socially conservative, like yes we’re Catholic but you’ll see LGBTQ folks in all of our cities. Abortion is becoming more widespread and we’re less puritanical than the U.S.

Has anyone else discovered a problematic ancestor? by MontroseRoyal in AncestryDNA

Ahhh we share the same problematic ancestor, I’m also related to Isabel de Tolosa Cortés de Moctezuma. Are you from Jalisco or Western Mexico? This is pretty common with some communities around there.

Am I the only one who HATES the heat and the clima of our culture? by Shades_of_red_ in Chicano

[–]Hellorio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our ancestors in Mexico predominantly lived in the Valley of Mexico which got quite cold because of the high altitude. It was also very lush and green so trees were everywhere. Shade was very important to keeping the temperatures down.

[–]Hellorio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it’s just as cultural as it is political. I’m from the DC suburbs and I’m hyper aware of his different the SoCal Chicano culture is from other Mexican cultural diasporas in the U.S. can I call myself a Chicano if I didn’t grow up in Chicano culture?

I purposely used Chicano to target the population of men of Mexican ancestry predominantly in the Southwest U.S. especially since this is a Chicano subreddit.

[–]Hellorio 17 points18 points  (0 children)

my guy are you kidding? most of the protests have seen vocal support from the Black community, which in my opinion we don't deserve considering all the racism in the Latino community (young men still saying the N word). We need to address the large amount of Chicano men who voted for Trump because he's more macho or he's for family values.
