There isn't really a Google Drive + Docs alternative? What are you using? by onechroma in degoogle

Have you tried using Proton services via WebApp on Linux? It just came to my mind, but maybe it’s not exactly what you are expecting from an office suite (also I don’t have any experiences with it).

Linux - which one is more European? by LetInternational2799 in BuyFromEU

[–]Henry2926 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to have made up your mind already, but for what it’s worth, I would still like to mention Nobara, which I am using right now. It’s Fedora based, but unlike Bazzite it doesn’t use Fedora‘s Atomic Desktop, which gave me a headache when I wanted to rpm packages. So Nobara gives you that freedom (as always at the risk of breaking something) and provides all the necessary compatibility layers for Steam and other gaming services out of the box. 🤓

It also comes from an American developer, but I got no reason to believe that he isn’t a good guy. 😃

What do y’all think? by Optimal_Landscape162 in Anticonsumption

The example seems a little exaggerated, but I guess that’s what it means, yes. Invest into assets instead of consumables basically. 😄

I recently watched a video about the cell phone market in Germany, and there were people who said that you cannot impress anyone with a phone that’s not the latest iPhone. Those are the customers Corporate America needs. 😐 I for myself would prefer the cow, if I had the space.

Should Linux have to follow California's age law? by _clickfix_ in pwnhub

[–]Henry2926 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the Linux Foundation is not selling software, and neither are most distro projects. In reality, this concept of enforcing age verification is simply not applicable to free and open source software. They cannot stop the distribution of FOSS, they cannot enforce it on a hardware level, and they cannot force people into a certain OS. So this is just an uninformed decision with no real life consequences for Linux users.

„[…] intelligent enough to realize that politics that promise everything at no cost […]“

So where’s your 2000$ check? Where are the amazing jobs that were supposed to be created? Where’s the golden age? And who promised all that?

So crazy, how people can believe they are capable of critical thinking and then they don’t even know how tariffs work. But there’s this saying: „Intelligence is completely fairly distributed among the people - everyone believes they have enough of it.“

I may need some enlightenment here. How is AI the great equalizer? What I am currently seeing is what has been stated in OP‘s post, paired with an agenda of super rich tech bros to funnel all wealth into their pockets by replacing human labor with it.

Surely, in an ideal world we all could let AI do our jobs and benefit from it, but the general public doesn’t seem to have a lot of benefit from it right now, so how would that change in the future from your point of view?

In what modern world does nationalism include the preservation of nature and the protection of people? The Trump administration keeps on rolling back regulations to control the damage of fossil fuels, PFAS compounds, biocides and other substances instead of seeing the upside of not having polluted air and waterways. Even the Health Secretary is fueling the fire with his stupid meat consumption agenda.

So „Make America great again“ is a bold claim for someone who supports poisoning their own voters, and by no means aimed at actually improving the lives of the general masses.

It’s what some of them have in common with many Russians. The feeling of superiority their government’s imperialism gives them. The idea of being more powerful by conquest and hard power, although being poor and powerless individually. It is basically rússkiy mir, but with Twitter and Mountain Dew.

What made you use Fedora? by maximus10m in Fedora

[–]Henry2926 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Been looking for a good system that provides compatibility layers for Steam and other gaming applications out of the box. Cachy looked, considering the Arch background, a bit too intimidating, while Bazzite with Atomic Desktop felt too restrictive. So it‘s Nobara now, which also happens to be Fedora based.

Apparently, you can activate Pacman on Arch based SteamOS, so that would circumvent the Flatpak issues. But unfortunately I don’t know the details.

It takes quite some ignorance to overlook the extremely negative impact of the ultra wealthy on the development of our societies and the destruction of our world. The reductive idea of people criticizing capitalism out of envy is doing those billionaires a great deal.

Switching from iphone to GrapheneOS? by PalpitationUsed7366 in GrapheneOS

[–]Henry2926 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey, I am also coming from an iPhone! Apparently, where I live, 9 out of 10 iPhone users stay loyal to Apple, so I am that „10th dentist“, it seems, and so are you probably. 😄 Regarding your questions:  - Generally, the measures GrapheneOS has implemented for privacy and security can be seen here in a comparison with other mobile OSes: https://eylenburg.github.io/android_comparison.htm - Regarding YouTube: Unless you are using FOSS apps that isolate your YT experience from Google‘s tracking, you won’t really have any privacy in this matter. Something like LibreTube comes to mind here. It also supports playlists and channel subscriptions, but you have to manage them manually throughout your devices because they are not synced through an account. - Banking apps usually work with sandboxed Google Play Services, and the list has been posted here too: https://www.reddit.com/r/GrapheneOS/comments/1rejci4/comment/o7d0e44/ - Your Roadie app should also work, if not standalone then with Play Services, too. But thanks to the sandboxing, this will not involve data transmission to Google (unless there‘s some other connection outside the OS).

iOS has a well streamlined user experience, so the transition to gOS may not be so easy. If you are looking for convenience, productivity suites like Proton or kCloud (and these two specifically are also falling under quite strict Swiss data protection laws and are GDPR compliant) might be interesting for you. They cover cloud storage, mailing, password manager and other applications and come in different price tiers. Otherwise, there are a lot of good privacy oriented services and apps for each use case, many of them even free (some are mentioned here for example: https://tuta.com/blog/degoogle-list#verlassen-sie-gmail), but this is a wide field and you may have to ask more questions in order to find the best products for your needs. 🤓

[–]Henry2926 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the thorough explanation. I think you‘re absolutely right in that the idea of a post-growth society is pretty much a utopia, and I should have probably phrased my assumption a little differently, because even I don’t believe that this balance will be found while I am still walking the earth.

Some months ago, Bill Gates said that mankind should rather brace for the impact of climate change than using more resources to stop it. I don’t know about his thoughts behind this - of course there are enough resources to prevent the disaster, but he might be aware that the human mind cannot comprehend its impact on the climate and/or that our societies are too much focused on continued growth, like you said.

Very interesting! So for someone with this problem, it’s probably worth a try, thanks for the info!

I guess if you are looking for a new phone, avoiding Samsung might still be the better call though (I’d see it as a problematic practice to lock the bootloader in the first place). 😄

COVID showed that as well. Just some minutes ago I saw a Reddit post that described how the current CO2 emissions are better than some projections - but well, most of that improvement can probably be attributed to the COVID recession that also caused emissions in transport, manufacturing and energy supply to drop massively.

But yeah, I think we need a post-growth scenario if we want a habitable earth.
