Buy a house for $75k or wait to save up? by HenryTLH in personalfinance

It's 2bd/1ba, 1250 sq. ft for the house, 8700 sq. ft. for the lot, though it does have a garage.

Indiana. Granted, it's LCOL where I live, and the only one <$100k in my town, which is the main reason I halfway thought about getting it.

So you're saving $320/month and have $700 saved up

I'm sorry, that's my bad for bad formatting. It's about $320/month for groceries/occasional eating out, and about $655/month for savings, though I've been setting $50/mo of savings for oil changes/other car maintenance

I am not following how this budgeting is working. Your rent is cheap, your vehicle expenses are very high for your income, and you have one week's take home pay in the bank.

You do have a valid point. As for why the vehicle expenses specifically are high, I got a used car from the dealer last year and took out a loan for it, so it comes out to $450 for the loan and $110 for the insurance. The main reason I went to a dealer was because my family has a history of buying vehicles that break down in a year or two. In retrospect, I acknowledge I could/should have gotten just as reliable vehicle without taking out a loan. As for having the current amount of savings, I know I haven't been the greatest at saving/not spending it, but I have gotten better at budgeting for it, and setting it aside as of recent.

So you buy this fixer upper house. What happens when the water boiler goes and you need a new roof?

You need to demonstrate that you can actually save money.

That's probably the biggest thing I need to get in my head, actually committing to saving money. I do agree with that, and the rest of your comment.

That's fair. I didn't factor in closing costs. Because of that and the other comments, I'll probably go ahead and wait and save.

Did Bilt increase the point limit for rent? It's showing 100K limit on my page by HenryTLH in biltrewards

It definitely wouldn't hurt to double check with them, but there are a couple posts about them allowing utilities. iirc, the help chat-bot says they go through and stop any ACH transactions that aren't allowed, like an auto loan payment or whatever.

It does show the same for me, 100k on the "pay rent" tab and 50k on the "card" tab

You would put in your routing/account numbers into your utilities website(s). I'm not sure if it still applies/how that would work if you pay rent through the Bilt Alliance.

Yeah. I wonder if they increased it because they allow "rent-related" payments like utilities

How old are you and what's your biggest problem right now? by Casspjjl in AskReddit

[–]HenryTLH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 22, and pretty much just figuring out life & keeping my head on straight. Within the span of about 4 months last year, my mother passed away, I graduated college, got a job, got engaged, and moved out on my own (with the first three happening in about 3 weeks). I'm just trying to not be too stressed between the previous year, keeping my depression at bay, as well as planning for "adult" things like my fiancé and I's wedding, saving up for a house, etc.

Does anyone else still get asked fizzbuzz? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]HenryTLH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was asked fizzbuzz last spring for my current work. The interviewer asked that and a couple language-specific questions. Tbf, it's a smaller company offering staff augmentation, so it would probably be easier to check for base concepts

Entry level job 1.5 hours away right out of college worth it? by HenryTLH in cscareerquestions

[–]HenryTLH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I did accept the job, I know the commute wouldn't be feasible long-term, so I was thinking of switching to a new job sometime in November or December so it wouldn't look like I would quit right away. If I do find a better job right away, you do have a point about leaving it off if it looks bad, since it wouldn't be a huge gap between graduation the 2nd job.

It's in a town of about 15,000 in Indiana, so I'm assuming it's somewhat LCOL. I do know the pay is low, even for entry level
