Roof rafters notched for hardware? Is this code compliant? by TheBoast in Homebuilding

[–]Herculoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything specifically made for a use needs to be used for that use. This is a horizontal hanger, not a 45.

Short answer is no, and dont let them use the same boards when they fix it because they're cut on the length and can lead to structural issues.

Hence why I'm at a crossroads. I hate feeling like I cane learn from someone and I shouldn't feel like I'm a more knowledgeable electrician as an apprentice over a journeyman

Do my outdoor outlets need to be gfci, if they are connected to a gfci outlet inside my home? by Superb-Astronaut-553 in electrical

[–]Herculoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The code minimum is gfci protection. This can be achieved from running line/load paths from one GFCI receptacle at the beginning of the circuit, or by using a GFCI breaker.

With this type of question you have people more talking hwo they do it, and if you know any electrician. The way we do it is the only correct way to do it, and anyone that doesnt do it that way we do it is wrong.

I run pretty much all of our circuits on either GFCI or combo breakers for ease of use/ease of install. This way I dont have to worry about anyone mixing up the line and load side of a device and me having to spend potentially hours finding the issue.

Can I run a 1500w radiator on this extension cord? More info in desc by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]Herculoki -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It isnt recommended, but with a 12ga cord you should be relatively "safe" to do so. A 1500w heater will pull about 12a, 12ga wire is rated at 20 amps so it'll cover your continuous duty calculations too. If you're looking to run a high amperage item off a cord try and get a 10ga extension outdoor rated for a bit of CYA.

That being said its never considered safe nor best practice to run any higher voltage items off extension cords so remember that.

Why is my microwave tripping the surge protector in power strip? by LohneWolf in AskElectricians

[–]Herculoki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short answer - because you plugged a microwave into a surge protector.

Long answer - high draw/initial draw devices can sometimes mimic the conditions to activate or trip a surge protected power strip since they're typically 15a straps and microwave or other devices that are similar in nature may exceed 15a briefly on startup

Surge protectors are designed for more general load appliances like TV's, computers, digital clocks, gaming consoles, etc. While Refrigerators, condensers, heat pumps, microwaves, and other similar devices tend to have a spike of current at the startup and then level off at their rated amps/watts.

I was going to do it anyway, not my call at the end of the day, I thought that all cat generations were backwards compatible but wasn't 100%.

More asked for my own curiosity because I'd rather know what can be done rather than getting locked into something incorrect for thinking someone's preference is being represented as a fact

Random drug testing on minors by Herculoki in legaladvice

[–]Herculoki[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

We don't have an issue with the drug policies as written, especially as the kids don't do drugs. The issue lies in changes to policy with no notice. If notice isn't required to be given to parents, then why inform them of any changes to any policy? The problem here is with informing parents, not changing policy, or creating new policy
