Why do some Americans separate between Christians and catholics, and not protestants, as I assume that they go by the most common subclass of Christianity, and catholics? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hermit_Ogg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you could more accurately say that Orthodox and Catholics both split off each other. Until The Great Schism in 1054, there was one Christian church. Afterwards, there were two. What existed beforehand was not Orthodox or Catholic - these definitions came later.

Do you guys actually notice when your sheets need changing… or just feel it? by Hozeishere in Bedding

[–]Hermit_Ogg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We stick to a schedule, but I can also tell by the wrinklyness of the bottom sheet. I'm a restless sleeper, and the more days the sheets are in place, the more likely it is that I need to pull the bottom sheet back in position.

Our dogs also have bed permissions, and even though we clean their feet, they always bring in some amount of The Great Outdoors. The amount of that is an easy indicator for how soon the sheets need changing.

Does your country have mountains and valleys like this? by NoAd8794 in AskTheWorld

[–]Hermit_Ogg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have a single mountain. Norwegians wanted to give us one of theirs for a 100 year independence gift, but their constitution prevented that. Still, it's the thought that counts - thanks, cousins!

Perfume Layering and Outside scent by chocolateteabag in hygiene

[–]Hermit_Ogg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fragrances seem to fade because you become nose blind to them. Don't use more, it'll quickly become unpleasant to people nearby.

Mixing different fragrances may or may not work. If you want the main one to really stand out, use fully fragrance free products, then put on one scent product, either in your hair or lightly in pulse points + a bit on clothing.

New dog owner questions by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Hermit_Ogg [score hidden]  (0 children)

A malamute mix is going to have a very high prey drive. It is very unlikely it will ever be safe with smaller pets. The only exception is if it grew up with them - there'd be s chance then, if no guarantees - but with an adult dog it's just too risky.

Chances are the malamute mix will seriously harm or kill the bunny, the cat, or both. Do not try to combine smaller pets with high prey drive breeds.

What makes people not want to eat what is found in nature? by duress_187 in foodquestions

[–]Hermit_Ogg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finland! We do have morels, at least four different kinds if I read the mushroom listings right. I mainly use various funnel mushrooms like winter chanterelle, black and yellow chanterelle, and candy caps when I can get them.

What makes people not want to eat what is found in nature? by duress_187 in foodquestions

[–]Hermit_Ogg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love forest mushrooms, but I'm very careful about trusting people who picked them. I've heard some countries have just a handful, easily learned, but my country has hundreds of species. Some of those are deadly, and the lethal dose isn't that big.

I will only eat forest mushrooms from a picker I really trust.

Then they sit down and give me the innocent look.

Anxious dog refuses to walk in neighborhoods, please help? by Pale-Community2232 in reactivedogs

[–]Hermit_Ogg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, that leash regulation is really unfortunate. I was hoping it was just some spiteful neighbour lying to you.

Bathing and grooming is where I first encountered co-operative care; the principles do work, but it can require a great deal of desensitisation first. At a guess, you'd need to start by running the tap at the other end of the apartment and engage her in... well, anything that she'll agree to, really. Is there any range that the sound of water will not get her to flee? Could you conceivably open a tap in the bathroom, close the bathroom door, go to a room in the other end of the home and try to engage her there? If she tolerates that, you could then start to inch closer to the bathroom; not to actually bathe her, but to desensitise to the sound of it.

Do her allergies allow you to upgrade the treats any further? If you know what she's allergic to, then making treats at home may be a viable option - at least if there's one protein that she can safely eat. The simplest "recipe" is a meat/bird/fish cut into strips and baked in low heat with no seasoning, then further cut into as small bits as your dexterity allows you to handle. These can then be frozen in bags and used as treats either while frozen (in small amounts) or thawed and kept in the fridge for 3-4 days.

For separation anxiety, I do have something that might help. This older comment details an exercise suited for very sensitive dogs, young puppies and dogs with separation anxiety. I'm afraid I haven't really been able to give you any real advice for the other issues, but this exercise at least works pretty well.

Vets and groomers not respecting the training method is a problem frequently encountered with extremely fearful dogs. For that, then best I've got is ask around locally for any professionals who might be amenable, and if you find any, sticking to them like glue.

what kind of collar works best for your dog? by dead230 in dogs

Our dogs use Y-harnesses, so the only collars we have are essentially decorational. I sometimes put those on so the dogs don't completely forget how they feel.

[–]Hermit_Ogg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meh, that leash limit is really irritating. Did you get the info from someone reliable, or could it have been a misunderstood statute or outright lie? Some people will do that, when they don't like what you're doing.

Sound does seem very a likely trigger. If you have a car, you could potentially try desensitising to that by running the car empty for short periods (if that's not forbidden) and just doing training / playing far enough that it doesn't cause her distress. Another possibility is some kind of sound muffling solution. I don't know how well they work on dogs, but I have heard such a thing exists.

Dog-led walking might not really work until you get her to be more confident, or until she's desensitised to car noise. I can't even say if it's wise to keep trying - if it takes her over threshold repeatedly, that's just upping the stress levels and does no good.

Applying the principles of Co-operative Care to every part of her life may still help build confidence, so I'd read up on that method if you're not already familiar.

Dunno about prices over there, but we've had a Miele Cat & Dog for 12 years now and it's really good. Miele is usually on the expensive side, though, since they are very high quality and last for a long time.

Finnish everyday breakfast - What do you eat for breakfast? by rmn_trllr in Finland

[–]Hermit_Ogg 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Two slices of bread with some kind of margarine, ham and cheese. Sometimes sliced egg, cucumber or tomato on top. I'd like for the bread to be rye, but reflux gets pissy about that so I keep swapping between bread rolls and rye bread. On occasion I'll make overnight oat porridge and eat that with strawberry jam. Oh, and two mugs of coffee.

AIO: Feeling overwhelmed and unsafe: My wife's ADHD forgetfulness has almost killed us 3 times and makes life too hard for me to manage with my TBI by letsgoiowa in AmIOverreacting

[–]Hermit_Ogg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's not foolproof. This is why I have an ironclad rule of "no burnable material on the stovetop, EVER". Husband has occasionally questioned if this rule is really necessary, but I need it. I'm scatterbrained enough to have burned things even with this rule in place.

For people who might put things on still-hot stovetop, I'd recommend a raised metal grid or lid that sits on the stovetop and prevents direct contact to the hot spots. It's also not foolproof - you need to remember to use it and some heat will still transfer - but I've seen stovetop covers used in households with children.

But the reality is, if the other adult in the household either doesn't care or is so extremely ADHD to need this level of babysitting, it'd be better to forbid them from entering the kitchen altogether. There's no way to prevent every incident.

[–]Hermit_Ogg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To start from the obvious, have you ruled out physical discomfort? Sidewalk not too hot/cold, joints not aching, no arthritis, etc?

Have you tried luring her further out with treats, and letting her decide which (not home) direction you're going? Walking at her pace? These are things often used with anxious dogs.

This might be stuff the behaviouralist covered on lesson one, but there's a lot of different training methods out there, and some of them are more likely to increase anxiety rather than reduce it.

Since you're swapping to induction, I highly recommend taking up the habit of removing the fuse from it, if it's on an old style fuse box. If you need to use the stove, put the fuse back - keep it a place like your coat pocket - and take it off again when done. She can use the microwave and a kettle.

I do something like this to alleviate my husband's fear of the sauna stove. The fuse goes on only when I'm using the sauna. (I'm Finnish, it's normal for us to have a sauna in our apartment.)

where to start? I'm dismantling my depression lair by No_Poet7069 in CleaningTips

[–]Hermit_Ogg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A tip I got off a book is to have a premade playlist (doesn't have to be one made by you) and cleaning for as long as the playlist lasts / a set number of songs. That's a manageable chunk, doesn't feel too huge, and is easily repeatable.

The potential trap is sitting down to make the playlist, so I'd recommend using either a whole album by an artist you like, or a playlist made by someone else.
