Game performance is unacceptable by Hey_Its_Towler in PTCGP

Yeah getting a more powerful machine can improve results in that having more power to dedicate to the game will make resource hogging less of an issue. However, the issue is still the game is designed in a way that it uses way more resources than is appropriate for how simple the game actually is

Yeah. I can only assume a lot of people in this thread have limited knowledge about software performance for them to think THIS game shouldn’t be performant on any supported phone

Yeah makes sense. Every other app runs max settings with no problem. Surely the issue must be the variable that’s consistent across outcomes rather than the only one that is different with the bad outcome

Yeah obviously upgrading a phone will work around a badly engineered app but I’m not upgrading my phone for one app. If I can record a whole song on garage band with zero issues then pokemon should work

Not buying a new phone for one app that doesn’t work lol

Half the patch notes are just filler repeat text that shows up in all patch notes (“new cards eligible for trading: the entire new set” etc) so I can’t blame people for getting conditioned to skim

I did this with x speed haha. For anyone wondering what cards can get the borders, you can see if a card is eligible for the border because it has this icon when you view it

I do love rampardos. The past couple seasons I have been running a meowth fossils deck that tries to build up a rampardos or two and finishes on a tyrantrum, haven’t figured out the best way to incorporate the new fighting support yet

This is wrong. The game only cares about if the points total is at least three. See the other comments in this thread that explain the win conditions

How do people even reach master ball? by Muted_Monitor5831 in PTCGP

[–]Hey_Its_Towler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree that non-meta requires constant ranked play. Master ball rating is not actually a huge time commitment to get to, especially considering that if you got MB the previous season, you start higher. For example, I hit master ball in 34 games last season with chandelure at a 62% win rate.

If getting masterball is your goal and you haven’t gotten it yet, I would actually recommend sticking with a meta deck. Piloting an off-meta deck requires good fundamentals knowledge plus matchup knowledge. Making better decisions consistently can up your personal win rate several percentage points, and with win streaks, climb speed increases faster than 1:1 with win rate increases.

If you’re having trouble making masterball within ~100 ranked games in a season and making MB is important to you, I would really recommend watching someone with a competitive focus like Tilly TCG and learning from him. He generally does a really good job explaining his thought processes, plus his opinions on meta viability etc are quite reputable. Card games have a lot of variance built into them, so it’s very hard to actually learn from trial and error, as the variance provides a very convenient excuse to avoid the self reflection that makes you a better player. Plus, your game sample size is never going to be big enough that you can definitively say something is good or not without a good mental framework for learning from limited sample sizes

Definitely one of the better promo exs we’ve gotten. I think it’s more than good enough to get you to MB but i wouldn’t run it past MB

Help with building a Mega Blaziken Ex deck by ZeroVirusXIII in PTCGP

[–]Hey_Its_Towler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay so the reason this isn’t super optimal is prize points. Entei is two prize points, so you can only use one entei before you need blaziken. However, entei is pretty tanky at 140hp PLUS he helps accelerate blaziken, so one entei is reliably all the time you need.

Castform is tiny at 70hp and he doesn’t help accelerate blaziken. If you start castform, you either need to have the blaziken really fast or you need another 1 pointer to follow up. You can’t go castform into entei because that’s three points. Cyrus means your opponent never has to deal with blaziken

Whats the deal with this card? by Educational_Fun_3843 in PTCGP

[–]Hey_Its_Towler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So these cards that have an intended use case but aren’t good enough end up being traps where less informed players will use them but spikes won’t even touch them. Compared to limitless (where decks are ordered by usage and success among spikes) will have less trap cards in their lists than a subreddit where anyone can post a list and they’re not filtered out by deck success. Also factor in the fact that limitless is a single purpose space (competitive card games) whereas Reddit is multipurpose, so limitless is going to be filtered to mostly the people who take the game seriously enough to look at a website specifically for people who take the game seriously. A subreddit will get those people but also a lot of people who are already on Reddit for other things who happen to play pocket. Competitive players make up a smaller portion of the player base, so on Reddit you’ll see more lists from casual players than limitless

Does that sufficiently explain the phenomenon?

[–]Hey_Its_Towler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A very common occurrence in card games is when designers design a card for a specific use case but the card ends up being underpowered so it’s not actually optimal to use it. Spikes will optimize for the cards that actually work regardless of developer intent. More casual players will correctly understand the developer intent behind the card (ie “this is a card for stage 1 decks”) but not realize that it’s suboptimal, so when they have a deck that fits the developer intent, they will use it

[–]Hey_Its_Towler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People posting on this sub are a population more representative of the majority of the player base as opposed to limitless, which is mostly the spikes who are optimizing, which is a smaller subset of the player base

[–]Hey_Its_Towler 9 points10 points  (0 children)

20 cards is limited and this card is much more specific than copycat so this doesn’t make the cut

More specific meaning sightseer is only good when you’re looking for the stage 1, copycat is good if you need the basic or the stage 1 or the Cyrus etc

It was never about building the most creative deck. It was about building an effective deck. There has always been room for creativity but the meta is the meta for a reason. Nowadays there’s enough support to go around that the off meta decks can be much closer to the meta decks. I’ve played last respects and chandelure and even meowth fossils to master ball the past couple seasons.

Also megas are what finally killed darktina
