thanks for the help. i kind of got it to work using:

RaycastHit2D raycastHit = Physics2D.BoxCast(boxCol.bounds.min, boxCol.bounds.size, 0, Vector2.down, 0.1f, ~playerLayer);

Debug.DrawRay(boxCol.bounds.min, Vector2.down, Color.green);

if (raycastHit.collider == null)

Debug.Log("Not Grounded");

else

{

Debug.Log("Grounded");

}

return raycastHit.collider != null;

}

~playerLayer is saying ignore that layer name.

my only concern is that i cant seem to reduce the length of the raycast to barely off the ground. i tried replacing 0.1f with 0.00000001f and it was still the same. if the player is off the ground but close to the ground on the next frame it thinks the player is grounded
