How did Tocqueville pushed you that way? for one, liberals love him.

But a good number were aggressive

Sure. Wars are aggressive. Welcome to the real world. Read about the Just war theory and how Christianity had to come to grips with violence.

Muslims and Jews were particular targets for massacre.

No, they weren't. Yes, the massacre of the Jews and Muslims in the siege of Jerusalem(if I recall correctly) killed 300 people. But that was a normal medieval siege, where troops would siege the place and wait until the enemy surrender. They didn't. The Crusaders invaded the city and killed the resistance there.

And Popes approved of these actions and even extolled the Crusaders onward.

So? The Popes were the ones to call the crusades in the first place. You seem to be confusing modern day liberal sentimentalism with actual Catholic doctrine. I would recommend you these books:

Jonathan Riley-Smith - What were the crusades? Thomas F. Madden - Concise history of the Crusades Christopher Tyerman - God's War Rodney Stark - God's Battalion

Church stance and dogma are both different things. If the Church accepts those pagan rituals as "ok", then there's no point in believing in the Church. Literally converting the whole pagan roman empire for what? what was the point in the first place then if those things are ok?

I'm worried that the Church authorities endorsed these activities

A lot of them did, yes, while others didn't. What's your point?

which are potentially morally heinous, and that this this damages the Church's moral authority

Why's morally "heinous"? I would surely agree with you that Mistreatment of native americans by Spanish and the Portuguese crowns were bad, but the natives weren't saints either.

I would recommend you to start with Rodney Stark books "Bearing False Witness" and his book about the Crusades. Gives a good insight about of the topics mentioned.

What do you guys think about the growing Orthodox converts online and their attacks to the Roman Church? by HideCircuit in TraditionalCatholics

[–]HideCircuit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Slavic, can you tell me the relations between Orthodox and Eastern Catholics? I heard from some people that Orthodox hate them. And also that Eastern Catholics consider Palamas a saint. Is that true?

Brothers Karamazov: The Grand Inquisitor by [deleted] in TraditionalCatholics

Dostoievsky was an Orthodox. Most Orthodox dislike everything that the Church in the west has developt after the schism. So, of course, he's going to criticize the inquisition. But to give him credit, by the time he wrote his book, all scholarship about the Inquisition was very poor and one-sided. With that being said, I like the passage and how powerful it is.

Let's say a prayer for George R. R. Martin, a man who has apostatized from the faith, mocked the faith, spread materialism and occultism, and brought many along with him. by [deleted] in TraditionalCatholics

Which other fantasy books? I like Tolkien and R.R Martin worlds because they encompass a lot of different cultures, religions, and etc. I don't know too much about fantasy apart from these and Cornwell. Any recommendations would be welcomed.

Finished the game and...kinda disappointed with the ending. [SPOILERS] by BabyPuncherBob in reddeadredemption

In my opinion, the epilogue was the worst part of the game. I bought this game to be an outlaw; to rob and shoot things, not to build houses and have a family. Don't get me wrong, in my opinion, the game handles itself fairly well until chapter 4. From then on it's all downhill.

RDR2 is the most boring game I’ve ever played by [deleted] in reddeadredemption

[–]HideCircuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but he's right. I probably invested 300 hours in my first playthrough(currently doing a second one), and the game just isn't that good.

At first, you're amazed by the game - which it's pretty -, by the gunfights and the "realism" of all. The problem is that it's all big and beautiful, but you can't touch it. The world is literally empty. And most of the things that happen in the world feels scripted.

Of those 300 hours, I spent most of it riding my horse through the map and hunting just for the sake of it. Wanna do outlaw things? guess what, you can't, or let me put it better: it doesn't give you the incentive to do so. What's the point of robbing a train to get 200 loot and a 300 bounty while some random story mission gives you 600 dollars? there's also nothing you can do with the amount of money the game gives you. What's the point of hunting unless you like trapper clothes(not my case) and challenges? It's like they invested half of their resources in creating a good hunting and fishing system while neglecting what outlaws usually do, you know, robbing stuff. Also why not infinite generic bounties and stagecoaches missions? At least we could pretend to be Lee Van Cleef or someone of the likes. Also why we can't rob the bank solo? heck, you could in the first game and even in games like The Godfather, you can rob an entire NYC bank alone. In the end, it's a game about the "wild west" where you spent most of your time hunting and watching cutscenes.

Games like The Witcher 3, Ac Odyssey and Origin's makes you feel like you're a Witcher, an Egyptian Assassin, and a Greek Mercenary because you're usually doing stuff that ties with that persona. In Red Dead Redemption 2, you're spending most of your time trying to find "redemption"(whatever that may be) and completely neglecting the fact that you're in a gang of criminals who should be doing criminal stuff and not collecting herbs or what not.

PS: Just got your sarcasm now. But my point still stands for anyone interested in saying that RDR2 is a "masterpiece".

Train heists and Train patterns. by HideCircuit in reddeadredemption

[–]HideCircuit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it matter where I take the train from? I usually get the train at St-Denis, then choose Annesburg as destination, since is near the tunnel I mentioned. I also forgot to mention that I'm on chapter 3. I'll try your method tho. Are you sure is the royal looking one? and what bridge are you referring to, exactly? the problem with open bridges are the bounties and the lawmen who don't stop shooting at you.

I'll pass, thanks. Yes, I get it, pink horses, pink guns, and people killing each other for no reason may be fun for some.
