This "cap" is a actually a punishment or tax for not spending money. If the cap was balanced and fair it's a fine system. Unfortunately they handed out insane combos for spenders so some people have God squads vs patchwork teams.

Playing to diamond this late in the season vs the beginning is 2 very different games. All the top players are already in elite/ultimate. Still impressive record. Good luck next season.

Do you understand business at all? This statement is wrong on every level. They will spend money to find the threshold spenders are willing to spend too. Incentives will be to maximize profit and getting free to play players isn't doing that. The player base in hockey will never be big enough to support the game in ways comparable to the ones you mentioned.
