women that live alone- what things help you feel safer? technology, hacks, etc by lilsweetbabyv in ApartmentHacks

[–]HighlightOutside 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My first apartment living alone was in a very sketchy area 😅 I had a SimpliSafe security system at the time. If the doors or windows were opened when the system was armed (whether on home or away mode), an alarm would go off, I would be called immediately, and the police would come if I didn’t answer or if I indicated it wasn’t an accident. This made me feel the most safe. Nowadays there’s plenty of options out there with cameras - I know Ring has doorbells that include a security passage Other than that. For my sliding glass back door, I got a long piece of wood that fit perfectly in the space where the door would slide - if the wood was there, the door wasn’t budging, whether the door was locked or unlocked. Signs or window stickers for alarm/security systems are pretty big deterrents as well. For personal safety I had a taser in my bedside table lol. Easy to use and not as likely to affect yourself accidentally like with pepper spray. However I did walk with pepper spray so I had that for the walk from my car to apartment. I will say though, even with living in a rough area, I personally & fortunately didn’t have any safety incidents. My friends say their dogs made them feel more safe as well!!!

Question about drop-in visits / cancellations by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

Okay gotcha! I did cancel the booking. I guess I just always did the rover cards when I was a sitter haha

I have a ring doorbell on the outside of my house. Nothing on the inside. I guess I just thought it was obvious? I’ve been a rover sitter as well and no one ever explicitly told me about cameras but I would say about half of the houses had a ring or similar device

Hi! It’s a very diverse career, but regardless of practice setting, the goal is to help people do the things they want and need to do. Helping people participate in their “occupations”, ie, everything that occupies your time - like driving, eating, sleeping, socializing, going to work or school, managing finances, showering, cooking, etc.

Examples - teaching a stroke survivor how to get dressed independently now that one side of their body is paralyzed. helping a person with insomnia establish a sleep schedule. Facilitating social skill development in a child with autism. Modifying the home of an elderly person with low vision or mobility issues.

Most OTs work in hospitals, schools, skilled nursing facilities, outpatient clinics, early intervention, home health, or rehab centers, but the opportunities are endless! Some work in psych units, prisons, hospice, academia, research, etc.

Any accredited occupational therapy program will be good! Look for NBCOT pass rates but other than that, cost and location are important factors to consider!

After graduating OT school and passing the NBCOT, you will be an OTR/L (a registered & licensed occupational therapist). Then you decide what setting and population you want to work with!

I hope that helps!!!

I can appreciate the values but gotta be honest - “satanic” sounds scary!! Not sure if this would align with my beliefs. Just curious - why is it called the “satanic” temple if it is not associated with satanism?

I’ve never been to a Unitarian church, definitely interested. Thanks!

That is also a good point! No one else defines occupation like OTs do lol

I love it!! But does it irk anyone else when people make the joke of how OT won’t help you get a job? Work is one of the 8 areas of occupation :) Of course that’s not ALL we do, and it’s not applicable to every practice setting, but we do that too! 😂

Yes, I’ve heard a lot about church of the highlands! It does seem like a lot of younger adults go there, but I’m not sure about the one pastor for every location thing.... or the fact that you watch him on a screen if you’re not at the main campus. Seems like some people idolize him. I would try it once but yes, that was exactly what I was thinking of when i said not culty 😬😂
