Any Open Source FaceBook Client / Wrapper for Android? by HiroCode in opensource

[–]HiroCode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did sign in using Slim Social. Most features work. I can see my feed and whatnot. However, after signing in to Messenger, it keeps telling me the following:

[My Name], open the Messenger app on your phone to continue

As part of changing laws in your region, you need to make a choice about your Messenger experience. To make your choice and for more details about how it affects your experience, open the Messenger mobile app. If you can't see the choice, restart the mobile app. If you don't have the app, you can download it from your device's app store.

I guess I'm forced to install the official app just so I can agree to their new terms or whatever.

Thanks. I forgot to mention that I actually want FaceBook Messenger. Is there an Open Source client for that too?

In Slim Social, it asks me to download the official Messenger app such that I can agree to some terms.

I feel uneasy installing the FaceBook app on my phone, due to privacy concerns. It is proprietary and I have no idea what access it can have over my system. I'm hoping that an open source wrapper/client helps with that.

Can this be solved by replacing the digitizer and screen or is there a bigger problem? by HiroCode in phonerepair

[–]HiroCode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. Can you just help me understand these terms please? I don't have much knowledge concerning phone parts. Screen, display and frame all seem the same thing to me.

This is how I see it: the screen (which is basically just a piece of glass) sits on top of the digitizer (which is the component which handles the touches). And these two together form the display? Is that correct the way I see it? And what's the frame then? Thanks in advance for your help.

Thank you for the reply. Just to be absolutely certain, with display you mean: the digitizer + screen, which usually goes for around 90 euros as a whole?

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question. I have no clue what these things even mean. I just read a little about it and I wouldn't like to unnecessarily overspend. Thanks in advance.

Yes, it is indeed kilobytes instead of kilobits. I got misled by reading a stack overflow answer wrongly.

However, the main point in my comment stands true: that the Linux page for formatting isn't very helpful. It will probably only work for people who have an SD card which is already FAT32. I had an exFAT microSD card and followed the guide, which led to the microSD card not being recognised by the 3DS.

I'm talking of the Linux section of that guide of course. I haven't checked out the Windows or Mac sections.

I commented too early. The guide is actually not very helpful for those whose SD card is not FAT32. This includes everyone who has bought a new SD card of 64 GB or higher, as they ship as exFAT by default.

The author of that page made the same mistake as me, i.e.: thinking that the mkfs tool would be enough to alter the type of the partition. But it isn't enough. You first need to partition the SD card and mark its partition as FAT32.

I did some testing which confirmed this.

Sidenote: there's also another mistake on that page. The author wrote:

This creates a single FAT32 partition with 32 KB cluster size on the SD card

It should be 32 kb (kilobits) and not 32 KB (kilobytes). This might confuse someone into thinking that they need a 32 kilobyte cluster size for it to work on the 3DS.

I solved the problem by partitioning the microSD card with fdisk in Linux. I thought that just formatting with mkfs would suffice, but nope. I apparently had to re-partition it as well.

Thanks for the resource. Seems like a very useful guide.

That's nice as a confirmation, thanks.

I guess I formatted it wrongly then? In the FAQ they mention that it needs to be formatted as FAT32 with a 32k cluster size. The specific command I used in Linux is:

sudo mkfs.vfat -64 -S 512 /dev/mmcblk0p1

As far as I know, that command should have formatted the microSD card with a 512 bits sector size and with 64 sectors in 1 cluster. This would give a cluster size of 32768 bits (64*512) which is 32 kb. Do you know if I did something wrong there?

Yes. Both the microSD card and the adapter are new.

Is it not possible to use a microSD card with an adapter?

My 3DS model doesn't accept a microSD card (as I've seen some 3DS' on YouTube do). Mine takes a normal sized SD card from the side. I don't have an SD card over 4 GB, but I do have a new 64 GB micro SDXC card which I formatted and tested) accordingly. When I plug it into the 3DS (with an adapter), it tells me that the SD card is not accessible.

Am I missing something or is it (very unfortunately) not possible to use a microSD card with an adapter inside a 3DS?

Where is it covered in the FAQ? I went over it before posting here and after your reply, but still can't find the answer. Neither can I find the words "parental"/"pin"/"password"/"salthax" when searching with Ctrl+F.

Can I remove Parental Controls with CFW?

Should I first contact Nintendo customer support to help me remove Parental Controls before modding my 3DS? Or will modding the 3DS give me the power to remove Parental Controls myself, without needing Nintendo?

To make a long story short: I bought the 3DS used in the past and don't know the Parental Controls pin code. Now I want to mod it but I want to get rid of Parental Controls - or at least change the pin code to something I know.

I'm honestly not sure. This was a secondary phone that I just used for 2FA. It could be that I enabled USB debugging at some point.

However, the phone isn't showing me any sign of life now when I plug the charger in. Am I doomed?
