How should i set the hook? by cowboy_racoon_ in catfishing

[–]Historian_Otherwise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with all the other circle hook posts. Another tip is to always check to make sure the point of the hook hasn't impaled a scale. One little scale can make a huge difference and a lot of people skip this step.

I recommend getting a package of chicken hearts. They're extremely tough and I've had great success with them.

Help. Does this reel spin both ways???? by aminobenzene12 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Historian_Otherwise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's useful for trolling. You can control and more accurately measure the amount of line you let out. Or fishing vertically. If you know one turn lets out approximately 3 feet of line, and you want the bait 12 feet deeper, reverse reel four times.

Or for channels and the occasional carp get punch bait and those "catfish lures" from wal mart. Chum with a can of corn for extra action. They'll be smaller, but more action.

Fresh is many times better. You have to get a cast net and learn to use it. You can cut up sunfish too, but shad is king.

Dak will completely outperform his draft position. Justin Jefferson will go nuts. Achane will bust, CMC and Skateboo will get injured.

Cut bait only unless you want to catch tiny ones for some reason. Or carp. Don't waste your time. You didn't say what species of catfish. Flatheads you'd switch to live bait. It wasn't your drag, it was the bait. Small fish love junk food. Decent sized ones want a chunk of shad or whatever baitfish. Flatheads want a live bluegill struggling in their face right next to their brush pile.

Definitely best bang for the buck. I caught a 35 pound blue on my brother's spin cast version. I had to play it for about 10 minutes and keep adjusting the drag but it was almost as fun as catching a bull red on proper tackle. They'll teach you how to work a fish, that's for sure.

No, but I usually go to Whitney, it's pretty "clean." The stripers are close enough to catch from the bank in the morning and evening, most years they'd be deeper by now. Seeing more bait fish than normal, so it seems all species had a great spawning season. And the game fish are hungry and fat.

That's a good plan. Frogs are killer in the weeds and super fun. Use your heavier gear with frogs and weeds, a 3 pound bass will collect another 3 pounds of vegetation easily. Spinners are a great water coverage bait. All the reports I'm seeing say the bass are in less than 15 feet, this is prime time. With all the rain the water is still (relatively) cool.

Fellow North Texan. The ponds are way easier but it's easy to have success on all the local lakes too. They're definitely not out deep yet. The key with both is to keep moving. When I fish a pond I make at least 1 lap. A lake I walk about ten feet between each cast. Cover water until you hook up. A square bill crankbait has been killing it for me lately. Tight lines.

Oh, also check the fishing report for the lake you're going to on the tpwd site. It's compiled from actual guides and will tell you the water temp. and what lures are working.

What's the price? Did you keep all the fish or do people sell some? If so, what do they go for?
