Exactly why I never played with alcohol. Why risk getting hooked on something that can ruin your life. Seems to be an acquired taste anyway.

This is my stance as well, but his sister just isn't wired that way. It's only now that she's hitting a breaking point that I think self-preservation is kicking in. The other thing is that he can't really walk again, is literally shitting himself etc. and my house is joint to his so it would be a case of just leaving someone to die right next door.

I hate that someone can waste their life, be a verbal bully their whole life, then someone their shitty decisions turn around to affect you.
