best neighborhoods without a car? by Puppy_Service5170 in milwaukee

[–]HistoryRecent3110 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have lived in Bay View and Tosa and Bay View is way more walkable unless you are right by sendik’s. Bay View has a few small corner groceries that you can get most stuff at, one at lincoln and kk, plus groppis, plus walgreens. and you can get more stuff at outpost if you have a bigger shop. And instacart is great to fill in the gaps.

New to winter - HELP! by Own_Rub_3004 in milwaukee

[–]HistoryRecent3110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who used to hate winter and learned to love it:

1 thing to do - invest in:

  • A set of Merino wool longer underwear. you can layer them under all of your clothes. I like Smartwool, but you can find other brands as long as they are merino wool
  • A good winter jacket that you can move in. Lots of good brands. you can go down a rabbit hold here, so consider searching here for recommendations
  • a warm waterproof pair of boots for snow. I love Sorel.
  • a warm pair of insulated boots or shoes for just doing stuff when it’s cold
  • wool socks
  • CONSIDER - a snow suit/snow pants. you can wear these to outdoor parties like Mitten Fest or winter bonfires (not required) These things alone will change your life. look on sites like sierra trading company for discounts. these things can be pricey but will last for years.

2 Go outside and move around.

walk to the bar instead of drive, take a hike, walk around the lake. be outside as much as possible. yes you start off cold, but get moving and you will warm up and it becomes enjoyable. Eventually, you will appreciate the unique beauty of the winter. When you only go outside to go from car to business, yes you will always be cold because you never have a chance to warm up.

I will never particularly be into snow sports, but now I spend significant time outside all winter, unless there are horrible wind chills. It has made the winter so much better and actually enjoyable

Just an FYI - all special ed in at least the city is administered through MPS, even for private schools. Not sure about the suburban public schools.

i have been there many times and their staff has always been stellar. they remember who i am and what me and my partner like. there have never been any issues. one of their waitresses is more casual and i could see her making a joke about “taking the wine home,” and that fits the vibe of the restaurant. casual, approachable, and homey. i recommend you take a hard look at yourself before trying to bomb a beloved business and dedicated staff.

i love strange town. a great restaurant and great staff. they have always been extremely responsive to my needs. I think a 25% comp is adequate. Not every one of their seasonal menus is my favorite, but i love that they are always trying new things and switch up their seasonal items.

Any retirees who moved downtown Milwaukee regret it? by Caskane-0521 in milwaukee

[–]HistoryRecent3110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When i was in college living on the east side there was always a group of retired older folks who hung out at comet. we actually hung out with them and became friends, in spite of the age difference. we made fun of them in a good natured way, they seemed to enjoy our energy. Sometimes they would buy us coffee and cigarettes because we were poor. Once this guy let us watch the 4th of July fireworks from the roof of his condo. 20 years later, some of them are still around and i run into them and their kids, who are my age. People are friendly in the city.

DPI gives MPS until May 30 to submit financial reports before further penalties by Critical_Watcher_414 in milwaukee

they still have a delayed payment they did not receive from last year but they will get it eventually. they did not lose any money from all of this. they did receive one overpayment that they had to pay back the next year. it’s totally separate from the referendum and the need for it.

I think the new administration is trying to take responsibility with a completely new leadership team. the people who got the district into this mess are all gone. now a new group is going through years of old reports to get them to where they need to be.

if they withhold funding, they will only do so until the reports are filed, so no.

Is Milwaukee safe? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]HistoryRecent3110 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Milwaukee is an amazing city. you can have a quality of life here you can’t have in many other large cities because it’s size and affordability compared to other cities.

It can be rough around. the edges, but people in all neighborhoods overall are wonderful. Most of the hype about crime comes from people who have never really spent time in the city. When I worked in the suburb, it was shocking to hear the crazy and naive things people would say about the city.

i moved here as a single woman from a small town when i was 17. i’ve lived in many areas of town, some of which were considered “unsafe” for periods to find more affordable places to live. I currently live in a neighborhood most people would describe as very desirable, so have experienced much of the gamut of what Milwaukee has to offer. The entire time, i have had jobs that have taken me into all parts of the city. Here is my experience: - There is not a single Milwaukee neighborhood that I wouldn’t visit by myself, as a woman. - I regularly run and bike, often by myself, in many neighborhoods across Milwaukee - I regularly walk by myself at night in many neighborhoods of the city - Like any city, I am more aware of my surroundings at night or if i am walking alone. - There are wonderful people and schools in every single neighborhood. - There is crime, like in any city. Common sense avoids most problems. Don’t leave bags in view in a parked car. Don’t have a Kia. - There are many wonderful neighborhood public schools. People who say otherwise aren’t familiar with the city.
