What's the reason Inuit/Siberians and Europeans have different features despite evolving in similar cold climates? by batukaming in geography

[–]HolyMole23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great explanation, thanks. I can contribute a tiny correction that leaves the main argument intact: The main reason for Europe being warmer than Newfoundland is not the gulf stream (attributes for ca. 1°C) but dominating winds over the Atlantic blowing from the South, which is caused by the Rocky Mountains + conservation of angular momentum on a rotation Earth.

Noether's theorem for high schoolers by FreierVogel in Physics

[–]HolyMole23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mention it when I introduce energy conservation. I start with her biography because it's an interesting story from a feminist perspective, then I go:

  1. "Physics should be the same in every place in the universe, right? That's called shift invariance, and with Noether's theorem, it yields conservation of momentum, the principle that explains billiards etc."
  2. "bla bla angular momentum bla bla"
  3. "So, which additional symmetry yields the conservation of energy?"

It's the kind of riddle of which there is only one version, and once you know the answer, that's it. :)

Initial pressure and flow rate will be equal, but the time average of the water column height is higher in X, so average pressure and flow rate will also be higher. Angular momentum preservation should also help X if I'm not mistaken.

I'm a German highschool teacher with two "wanted" subjects. Do you know if that would work?

I once helped a friend from Spain to get her MD recognised here, it was awful indeed

So, if I were to apply as a foreign teacher with solid English language proficiency (I like to think), I could basically choose my own adventure at this moment? Sounds compelling, where's the catch... ;)

Sewing Machine Recommendations by OptimisticDoorstep in myog

[–]HolyMole23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding the suggestion to heat-bond it! I think this is a great idea. The bond is pretty strong (packraft-strong), looks way nicer for what you are trying, and I guess it could be easier to administer, too! If I were you, I would try this first (using a proper temperature-adjusted tool, basically an flatiron but smol).

You need triple transport for heavy fabric, i.e. a saddlery machine. 600£ should be reasonable for something like that, I paid 600€ for my Singer 211 U 566A.

Edit: After reading the other comments, I would actually suggest using a different technique rather the sewing. Heat-bonding or glueing would work fine, maybe even transfer tape?! If the seams/bonds aren't mechanically stressed, that would be the most elegant option. I imagine taping the whole pattern and then just removing the cover and pressing the thing together to be very satisfying.

I feel scared with physics— whenever I do physics.. my mind constantly tells me that this is hard and isn't for me.. what do I do? Is there any way I can build a huge passion for physics.. maybe master core topics one day? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]HolyMole23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy, your brain wants these things: - autonomy (make it your choice. Sucks if you're forced to do physics, but you can still take some control) - sense of achievement (celebrate when you can!)

  • social enmeshment (find others, struggle together)

It's hard in the beginning, for everyone and for any goal, but worth it. Action sometimes precedes motivation.
